The first digit describes protection against solids and dust; the second describes protection against water. Whether a particular TV is suitable depends on its exact model, installation requirements, position near a bath or shower, and the electrical rules that apply where you live.
What does IP65 mean on a bathroom TV?
An IP code identifies enclosure protection. Its two digits describe different kinds of exposure: the first concerns solid objects and dust, while the second concerns water. Read the digits separately rather than treating IP65 as a single, general-purpose safety grade. AVIXA’s explanation of IP ratings, citing IEC 60529, describes this distinction.

IP65 is a stated enclosure test class, not a guarantee that a television is waterproof in every real-world situation or permitted in every bathroom location. The rating also does not establish whether every supplied part—such as a power supply, remote, cable, port, or connected device—has the same protection.

Which IP rating do you need for a bathroom TV?
There is no universal minimum IP rating for every bathroom TV installation. The applicable requirement depends on the country’s electrical rules, the location within the bathroom, likely water exposure, and the product’s own installation instructions. Do not assume that IP65 is automatically required—or automatically sufficient—without checking those factors.

IEC 60364-7-701:2019 covers electrical installations at locations containing a permanently placed bath and/or shower. Its listing notes that equipment likely to be exposed to water jets needs at least IPX5, with a higher degree to be considered for more severe conditions. It also addresses the most onerous zone when equipment spans multiple zones. This standard’s scope does not, by itself, approve a particular television or installation.
Why bathroom zones depend on your location
Bathroom zones are part of electrical installation rules, which vary by jurisdiction. A simplified zone table in the Electrical Installation Guide is based on French NFC 15-100: it lists IPX7 for Zone 0, IPX4 for Zones 1 and 2, and IPX5 where horizontal water jets are present. The guide says to consult the applicable national standard for complete requirements. These values are useful context, not universal rules for placing a TV, and they should not be treated as television-specific authorization.

What to check before buying a bathroom TV
- Find the exact model’s documentation. Check the product specification and installation manual for the stated IP code and any location restrictions.
- Check when the rating applies. Some claims may depend on correct installation, including a specified recess, seal, cable, or accessory. BathroomTV, for example, says its Watervue mirror TVs meet IP65 once installed; verify what the exact model requires for that claim. BathroomTV’s product page lists Watervue examples in 32-inch and 43-inch sizes.
- Assess the intended position and exposure. Have the installer consider the TV’s position relative to the bath or shower and whether direct spray or cleaning jets could reach it.
- Check every component. Confirm whether the protection claim includes the power supply, remote, connections, cables, and any external equipment, rather than assuming the rating applies to the entire setup.
- Confirm local electrical requirements. Ask a qualified electrician or installer to check the applicable zone, circuit, and product-installation rules before work begins.
How to compare bathroom TV options
Compare the precise product and its installation conditions, not just the headline IP number. Manufacturer documents are evidence of what the manufacturer specifies, not independent verification of performance.

An outdoor TV rating is not interchangeable with a bathroom TV’s product-specific installation conditions. Samsung’s guidance for The Terrace illustrates why: its IP55 rating does not mean the set is impervious to water damage in every situation, and Samsung says not to submerge it.
