Use a batch LLM API when summaries can arrive later and requests are independent. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google each document batch pricing at 50% below their standard or synchronous rates. That discount is a provider price rule, not a guarantee that your total bill will fall by exactly half: token mix, retries, caching, tools, model selection, negotiated rates, and failed work all affect the result.
Realtime calls remain the better fit for interactive products, strict response-time targets, streaming interfaces, or work that cannot tolerate queueing. For either mode, reliable attribution requires a stable request ID, workload metadata, usage records, and reconciliation against provider usage and invoices. This guide shows how to choose the service, estimate the real cost, and assign every summarization request to a team, feature, tenant, or dataset.

Batch versus realtime: the decision in one view
Batch and synchronous APIs can send the same general kind of prompt, but they optimize for different operating conditions. Batch collects independent requests, queues them, processes them asynchronously, and returns a result file or batch result object. A synchronous call returns a response in the request flow, often with optional streaming.

|---|---|---|
| Latency | Asynchronous. OpenAI documents a 24-hour completion window; Google describes a 24-hour target. Actual completion time depends on provider capacity and workload. | Designed for immediate or interactive responses. Exact latency depends on the model, endpoint, region, and service tier. |
| Published price | OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google each document a 50% discount against their respective standard or synchronous prices. | Standard rates are the baseline. Some providers offer higher-priced priority tiers or discounted synchronous tiers with different reliability behavior. |
| Reliability behavior | Provider-specific queueing and preemption rules apply. Google describes Batch as sheddable, with queueing and retry behavior. | Google describes Standard as the default tier and Priority as non-sheddable; other providers have their own service-level terms. |
| Request mechanics | Submit a file or batch object, poll status, then download or retrieve results. Results must be matched to the originating requests. | Consume each response in the request flow. Streaming availability depends on the API and endpoint. |
| Best fit | Dataset summarization, offline evaluation, repository or archive processing, and other workloads that can wait. | User-facing summaries, agent steps, alerts, interactive editing, and jobs with a deadline shorter than the batch window. |
| Attribution work | Requires durable mapping between submitted IDs and returned results, plus handling for partial, expired, canceled, or retried work. | Still requires workload tags and usage reconciliation, although the response arrives immediately. |
These are service-level distinctions from provider documentation, not a claim that every model or request shape is interchangeable. Confirm the current model reference, endpoint limits, regional availability, and pricing before moving production traffic.

What the 50% batch discount actually means
A “50% discount” normally means the provider applies half of its listed standard or synchronous token price to eligible batch usage. It does not mean that a monthly bill automatically becomes 50% smaller. Your realized reduction can be lower when only part of the workload qualifies, when retries duplicate tokens, or when non-token features remain separately billable.
OpenAI pricing and billing terms
OpenAI’s Batch API guide describes a workflow in which a set of requests is collected into a file, submitted as a batch job, monitored, and retrieved when complete. The guide documents a 50% discount compared with synchronous API pricing. The current pricing documentation is the authority for model-specific input and output rates.
The Batch API FAQ states that a batch has a 24-hour completion window. Requests that have completed remain billable if the batch is canceled or expires, so cancellation is not a way to erase already processed usage. OpenAI also says Batch has separate rate limits, does not support streaming, and that zero data retention does not apply to the Batch API. Check the current Batch API FAQ and model availability list before using it for sensitive data or a model that is not explicitly supported.

Anthropic pricing and billing terms
Anthropic’s Batch processing documentation says the Batches API provides significant cost savings and documents pricing at 50% of standard API prices. The matching pricing page contains current model rates and should be checked for the model and token categories in your workload.
Most Messages API requests can be batched, but Anthropic lists unsupported stateful or synchronous-only parameters. Batch requests are processed independently. The documentation recommends monitoring status, retrying failed requests appropriately, using meaningful custom IDs, and dry-running a request shape before a large submission. Do not assume that a feature available in a synchronous Messages call is also available in a batch request.
Google pricing and service tiers
Google’s Gemini API optimization and inference guide documents Batch at 50% of standard cost with a target turnaround of up to 24 hours. It describes Batch as asynchronous and sheddable, with queueing and retry behavior. A target is not the same as a universal completion guarantee; plan for late results and define an operational deadline.

The same guide distinguishes Flex from Batch. Flex is synchronous, discounted by 50%, and sheddable. Priority is synchronous and non-sheddable, but the guide places it 75–100% above Standard pricing. These terms can change, so recheck the live guide and model pricing when you publish a cost model or service-level commitment.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How to calculate the cost you will really attribute
Start with measured usage rather than multiplying a broad invoice by 0.5. For each request, calculate the provider charge from the actual model and token categories, then add any separately billed feature and retry costs.
A practical request-level equation is:
effective_request_cost = input_tokens × input_rate + output_tokens × output_rate + cached_token_charge + tool_or_feature_charges + retry_costs
For eligible batch traffic, the applicable input and output rates may be half the provider’s standard rates. The equation still needs the actual token counts and all other charges. If a request fails after consuming tokens and is retried, record both attempts rather than counting only the successful response.
Choose the denominator before comparing modes
Different denominators answer different management questions. Track at least these measures separately:

- Cost per completed summary: spend divided by summaries that pass your acceptance criteria.
- Cost per useful summary: spend divided by outputs that downstream users actually accept, after quality filtering.
- Incremental cost of retries: tokens and features consumed by failed or repeated attempts, reported separately from first-pass work.
Use the same denominator for batch and realtime when making a decision. Otherwise a batch run with many expired items can appear artificially cheap if you count only successful outputs.

A durable attribution pipeline
Provider invoices generally show usage by account, model, and billing category; they do not automatically know which internal team or product feature should pay for a shared batch. Build that allocation in your own request ledger.
- Create a stable request identity. Generate an ID that remains unchanged through submission, polling, retries, and reconciliation. OpenAI requires a unique
custom_idin each batch request. Anthropic recommends meaningful custom IDs because returned results are not guaranteed to arrive in request order. - Attach internal dimensions in your own database. Store team, product feature, tenant, source dataset, environment, campaign, and any cost-center code alongside the provider ID. Do not rely on a prompt field as your accounting key; prompts can be edited, truncated, or redacted.
- Persist the submitted request. Record provider, endpoint, model, service tier, submission timestamp, prompt or payload hash, estimated token count, and the batch or job ID. Keep sensitive content under your retention policy while retaining enough metadata to audit the charge.
- Persist every returned result. Match by ID, not by array position or arrival time. Save status, output location, finish timestamp, provider error code, and whether the result was accepted, rejected, canceled, or expired.
- Capture usage at request level. Record input and output tokens, cached tokens where applicable, tool or feature usage, and the exact rate category used. Keep successful work, partial work, and failed attempts as separate records.
- Model retries explicitly. A retry should reference the original request ID and have its own attempt ID. This lets you charge the owning workload for duplicate tokens without losing the causal link to the failure.
- Reconcile to provider data. Compare the ledger’s summed usage with provider usage exports and the invoice for the same period. Investigate differences caused by time-zone cutoffs, canceled or expired batches, delayed usage reporting, taxes, credits, negotiated rates, or separately billed tools.
- Allocate shared costs by a stated rule. If a platform fee or shared batch job cannot be assigned at request level, document an allocation method such as token share, completed-document share, or reserved-capacity share. Keep that allocation separate from the provider’s measured token charge.
This is an implementation pattern based on documented identifiers, result ordering, usage, and billing behavior. No reviewed provider defines one universal cross-provider accounting schema or promises that invoices will allocate shared spend to your internal teams automatically.
OpenAI Batch implementation details
OpenAI says the Batch API supports a range of endpoints, including Responses, Chat Completions, Embeddings, Completions, Moderations, and image endpoints. A current input file can contain requests for only one model, so a summarization pipeline using multiple models must separate them into model-specific files or jobs.
Submission and reconciliation checklist
- Build one request object per document and assign a unique
custom_idthat your ledger can resolve without the document text. - Validate that the selected model and endpoint are supported by Batch and that the request does not require streaming.
- Upload the input file, create the batch, and store the returned batch identifier with your internal workload ID.
- Poll the batch status until it reaches a terminal state, recording timestamps and counts at each status change.
- Retrieve the output and error files. Join every line to the ledger by
custom_id; never assume output order. - Record usage and charges for completed requests, including work completed before a cancellation or expiration.
Because Batch has separate rate limits, schedule large submissions with enough queue capacity and avoid treating the synchronous rate limit as a safe estimate. If your product needs token-by-token output, Batch cannot provide that streaming interaction.
Anthropic Message Batches implementation details
Anthropic processes batch requests independently, so state that would normally live in a synchronous conversation cannot be assumed to carry from one item to another. Put all context required for a summary in each request or use an upstream preprocessing step that produces self-contained inputs.
Controls that reduce avoidable failures
- Use a meaningful custom ID containing an internal lookup key, while avoiding confidential content in the identifier itself.
- Dry-run one representative request shape before generating a large batch. Check parameters that are stateful or synchronous-only.
- Monitor batch status and classify errors into transient, permanent, and input-validation failures.
- Retry only the failed items that are safe to repeat, preserving an attempt record and original workload ID.
- Reconcile returned items by ID because response order is not guaranteed.
These controls matter for attribution as much as for reliability: an untracked retry or an item matched to the wrong source document produces both a bad summary and a bad cost center.

Google Batch, Flex, Standard, and Priority
Google’s service-tier framing gives teams more than a simple batch-versus-realtime choice. Standard is the default synchronous tier. Flex is synchronous but discounted and sheddable, while Batch is asynchronous with the documented 24-hour target. Priority is synchronous and non-sheddable, with the guide describing a 75–100% premium over Standard.

| Google tier | Interaction model | Reliability behavior in the guide | Price relationship stated in the guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Synchronous | Default tier | Baseline |
| Flex | Synchronous | Sheddable | 50% discount versus Standard |
| Batch | Asynchronous; up to a 24-hour target | Sheddable, with queueing and retry behavior | 50% of standard cost |
| Priority | Synchronous | Non-sheddable | 75–100% above Standard, according to the guide |
Use this table as a description of the documented trade-offs, not as a permanent price sheet. Verify current regional and model-specific terms before committing to a budget or response-time objective.
When realtime is worth the premium
Choose synchronous or realtime calls when the user is waiting, when a downstream system needs an answer within a defined short interval, or when streaming materially improves the experience. Realtime also makes operational feedback immediate: the caller can retry, fall back, or show an error without waiting for a queue window.
A higher-priced tier can be justified when the cost of delay or preemption exceeds the token discount. Examples include a moderation decision blocking a live transaction, a support agent waiting for a suggested reply, or a workflow whose downstream reservation expires in minutes. Price the business impact of a late result alongside API charges; a cheaper request that misses its deadline is not cheaper at the workflow level.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When batch is the better engineering choice
Batch is a strong fit when you can partition work into independent requests and consume results later. Typical examples include summarizing an archive overnight, classifying a large dataset, generating embeddings for a repository, or running an offline evaluation. OpenAI specifically calls out dataset classification, evaluations, and embedding repositories; Google identifies massive datasets and offline evaluations as suitable uses.
Design the consumer as an asynchronous pipeline: submit, monitor, retrieve, validate, and publish. Store intermediate status so a worker restart does not submit the same documents again. Keep a dead-letter path for malformed inputs and a replay path for transient provider failures.

Failure modes and fixes
The discount appears smaller than expected
Check whether all requests used an eligible batch model, whether some traffic stayed synchronous, and whether output tokens or retries grew during the migration. Add cached-token, tool, image, or other feature charges to the comparison. Recompute cost from request-level usage rather than from a headline percentage.
Results cannot be matched to source documents
Stop positional matching. Use the provider’s request identifier, such as OpenAI’s custom_id, as the join key and maintain a submission ledger. For Anthropic, account for non-guaranteed response order.
A batch misses its business deadline
Define a cutoff earlier than the provider’s documented window, monitor queue age, and maintain a fallback path for urgent items. Route only deadline-sensitive requests to a synchronous tier; do not move the entire workload and lose the batch discount unnecessarily.
A canceled or expired job creates an unexpected charge
Inspect which requests had already completed. OpenAI states that completed work remains billable when a batch is canceled or expires. Mark those items as completed attempts in the ledger and avoid charging them again if you replay only the unfinished remainder.
A request works synchronously but fails in batch
Compare endpoint and parameter support. OpenAI requires model compatibility and one model per input file; Anthropic lists stateful or synchronous-only parameters that cannot be batched. Create a minimal dry run, remove unsupported fields, and document the resulting request contract.
Retention requirements conflict with batch processing
Review the provider’s current data-retention terms for the exact API. OpenAI’s FAQ says zero data retention does not apply to Batch. If your policy requires that control, obtain current contractual guidance or use an API mode whose retention terms meet the requirement.
A practical rollout plan
- Measure the current baseline. Export a representative period of realtime requests with model, input tokens, output tokens, retries, latency, and business outcome.
- Segment eligible work. Separate interactive requests from independent, delay-tolerant documents. Exclude workloads that require streaming or unsupported parameters.
- Build the ledger first. Add stable IDs and internal dimensions before submitting a large batch. If attribution is missing, a discount can hide unassigned spend.
- Run a controlled pilot. Submit a representative slice, including large and small documents, expected failures, and retries. Compare cost per submitted and completed document using the same denominator as the realtime baseline.
- Set operational thresholds. Define maximum acceptable queue age, retry limits, expiration handling, and the point at which an item falls back to synchronous processing.
- Reconcile after settlement. Wait for provider usage data and the invoice, then explain every variance before scaling volume.
- Review quarterly or after model changes. Prices, model eligibility, rate limits, and service features change. Recheck each provider’s live documentation on publication day and whenever you change models.
Questions to answer before approving a migration
- Can every request be processed independently, or does it depend on conversation state?
- What is the latest acceptable completion time for each workload class?
- Which models and endpoint features are eligible for batch today?
- What percentage of the workload is expected to retry, expire, or be rejected?
- Will cached tokens, tools, images, or other features add charges outside the headline discount?
- Can finance join provider usage to a stable internal request ID?
- What fallback handles an urgent item when the batch queue is late?
- Does the provider’s current retention policy meet the data classification for the documents?
The Bottom Line
For bulk summarization that can wait, batch APIs offer a documented 50% provider-price reduction at OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, but the economic case is valid only after measuring real token usage, retries, feature charges, and failed work. Keep realtime processing for interactive or deadline-sensitive requests, and make either choice auditable with stable request IDs, preserved result mappings, and invoice reconciliation.
