The government attributed the incident to a cooling-system failure and said its investigation found no evidence of a cyberattack or personal-data compromise, according to Data Center Dynamics’ October 5, 2026 report.
What happened to IT systems in southern Italy?
A failure at the regional data center in Potenza, Basilicata, caused instability in data storage and made some services temporarily unavailable. The outage occurred between Sunday and Monday; Data Center Dynamics did not report an exact start time. Technicians worked for several hours to address the failure, the publication said.

The disruption affected public services, but the report does not provide a system-by-system inventory or a timestamp for when each service was restored.
Are Basilicata’s healthcare booking systems back online?
Yes. The regional government said its Central Reservation Center (Centro Unico di Prenotazione), used for healthcare services, was back online on Wednesday. The report gives no exact restoration hour and does not confirm that every regional IT system had returned to service.

The government said response efforts initially prioritized healthcare, describing it as “the most sensitive area for the community” and saying the aim was to restore essential services fully.
What caused the outage in Basilicata?
Data Center Dynamics reported that the regional government identified an anomaly in the data center’s main cooling system and a backup system that failed to start. The resulting storage-system instability led to temporary service unavailability. The report does not identify specific equipment or explain a more detailed technical failure mechanism.

Was the Potenza data center outage a cyberattack?
The regional government said its investigation ruled out a cyberattack and found no evidence of unauthorized system access, personal-data theft, exfiltration, or unauthorized disclosure. This is the government’s stated finding as reported by Data Center Dynamics, not a separately published forensic assessment.
What other public services or deadlines were affected?
Data Center Dynamics, citing Italia 2 News, reported that some administrative deadlines were affected, including applications for university scholarships and housing. It also reported that a Regional Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday was postponed. These impacts were attributed to the secondary report rather than independently verified in the DCD article.

What remains unclear about the recovery?
The available account confirms the healthcare reservation center’s restoration, but does not list the status of each affected service, provide individual recovery times, or describe a remediation plan. It also does not publish a full technical incident report or a service-by-service status log.
For wider context, Data Center Dynamics said Italy has around 200 data-center facilities, concentrated mainly in northern and central hubs such as Milan and Rome, with less infrastructure in the south. The report does not specify the underlying dataset or its year, so the figure should be treated as an approximate estimate cited by DCD rather than a verified current count.
