Fabric.js then renders only the image pixels that overlap that shape. For a frame that must stay fixed while the picture moves, use an absolute-positioned clip path, keep a separate non-selectable frame border, and write the drag/zoom controls yourself; Fabric.js provides the primitives, not a complete Canva-style masking widget.
What Fabric.js masking actually does
Fabric.js represents a raster image with FabricImage. A clip path is another Fabric object used only for visibility. It has no visible stroke: its filled area remains visible, and pixels outside that area are removed from the render. By default, the clip path is positioned from the center of the object being clipped, so its origin settings affect alignment.
Selection is separate from clipping. Fabric’s canvas supports single-object selection, area selection and multi-selection, with controls for scaling, rotation, resizing and skewing. A user can therefore select the image object even when much of it is hidden. If the requirement is “select only the visible masked area,” you need an interaction design around those primitives rather than a single built-in option.
Minimal circular mask
This browser example loads an image, creates a circular mask and adds the clipped image to a canvas. The image remains the selectable Fabric object; the circle is the visibility boundary.

import { Canvas, FabricImage, Circle } from 'fabric';
const canvas = new Canvas('editor');
const element = document.querySelector('#source-image');
const image = new FabricImage(element, {
left: 240,
top: 180,
originX: 'center',
originY: 'center',
selectable: true
});
const mask = new Circle({
radius: 120,
originX: 'center',
originY: 'center'
});
image.set({ clipPath: mask });
canvas.add(image);
canvas.requestRenderAll();
The equivalent setup after an image has loaded is the same: construct a FabricImage, construct any normal Fabric object for the mask, assign clipPath, add the image and request a render. Keep the image and mask origins explicit; relying on defaults is a common cause of an apparently shifted crop.
Choosing between clipPath and cropX/cropY
| Requirement | Use | What the value means |
|---|---|---|
| Circle, rounded rectangle, polygon or compound frame | clipPath |
A geometric visibility shape in Fabric’s object coordinate system |
| Remove a rectangular portion of the source bitmap | cropX and cropY |
An offset measured in the original image’s pixels |
| Make the remaining picture fill a different frame | Either approach plus explicit transforms | You must calculate scale and position; clipping does not resample or enlarge pixels automatically |
Use cropX/cropY when the product requirement is a source-image crop. Use clipPath when the boundary itself is the design: a circle avatar, irregular polygon, badge or grouped shape. A clip path does not automatically zoom the surviving pixels to fill the shape. After changing scale, position or crop values in application code, mark the image dirty and request a render; call setCoords() when transforms are changed outside Fabric’s normal interaction pipeline.
Keeping a frame fixed while moving the image
For a photo slot that stays at a canvas coordinate while the user pans the photo behind it, make the clip path absolute-positioned and manage its coordinates independently. Fabric’s absolute clipping model leaves the object free to move while the clip path remains steady, so only the object’s pixels inside the fixed shape appear.
const image = new fabric.FabricImage(element, {
left: 320,
top: 220,
originX: 'center',
originY: 'center',
selectable: true
});
const fixedMask = new fabric.Rect({
left: 320,
top: 220,
width: 360,
height: 240,
originX: 'center',
originY: 'center',
absolutePositioned: true
});
image.set({ clipPath: fixedMask });
canvas.add(image);
// A visible border is a separate shell, not the clipping object.
const border = new fabric.Rect({
left: 320,
top: 220,
width: 360,
height: 240,
originX: 'center',
originY: 'center',
fill: 'transparent',
stroke: '#ffffff',
strokeWidth: 2,
selectable: false,
evented: false
});
canvas.add(border);
canvas.requestRenderAll();
In a real editor, put the border above the image and keep it non-selectable and non-evented. The image receives pointer events and can be dragged, while the shell communicates the frame’s position and size. If the frame itself is draggable, move the absolute mask and border together in your own code.

Moving and zooming the picture inside the slot
Do not move the mask during a photo-pan gesture. Translate the image instead, then render. For zoom-to-fill behavior, compare the source aspect ratio with the frame aspect ratio and choose the larger scale required to cover both dimensions. Apply that scale to the image, center it on the frame, and let the clip path hide the overflow. If your code changes left, top, scaleX or scaleY directly, update coordinates with setCoords() and call requestRenderAll().
Making selection feel like a masked editor
A fixed frame and a selectable image are different objects, so decide which interaction the user should get in each mode.
- Simple editor: keep the image selectable and use standard Fabric controls. The hidden portions remain part of the object and can be dragged back into view.
- Frame-first editor: make the border shell the hit target, then forward drag and wheel gestures to the image. Leave the shell non-evented during the actual image manipulation.
- Custom controls: replace or supplement Fabric controls so corner handles resize the frame while drag gestures translate the image. Keep frame geometry and image transforms in one coordinate model.
- Visible-area selection: constrain hit testing or selection handles to the mask region in application code. Fabric exposes selection events and custom controls, but the policy that maps a masked area to an object is yours.
A January 2025 Fabric.js maintainer discussion describes selecting only the clip-path area by assigning a group as clipPath and using the clip layout strategy. It does not provide a complete application example, so prototype that behavior against the exact Fabric.js version you pin and test mouse, touch, rotation and serialization paths.
Rectangles, circles, polygons and groups
Rectangles and circles
These are the least surprising masks. Set originX and originY to center on both image-related geometry and calculate the frame in the same units. A circle’s radius defines the visible diameter; a rectangle’s width and height define the slot.

Polygons
A fabric.Polygon can define an irregular visible region. Keep its points and the image transform in a predictable coordinate space, especially when the image rotates. Polygon clipping is geometric visibility, not a source-pixel crop.
Groups
Group multiple clip objects when the visible area is made of several shapes. Grouped members combine with logical OR behavior. Group clipping does not provide SVG nonzero or evenodd clip-rule behavior. For inverted masks, invert the group itself; inverting individual objects inside a clip group is unsupported.
Rotation, coordinates and export concerns
When an image rotates, the mask must remain in the coordinate model you intended. Relative clip paths follow the clipped object; an absolute-positioned mask stays in canvas coordinates. Mixing those models produces drift that becomes obvious at non-zero angles. Use Fabric’s positioning helpers such as setPositionByOrigin or center where appropriate, and call setCoords() after out-of-band transform changes.
Keep a visible frame border separate from the clip path if the border must export. The clip path itself has no stroke, so styling it will not create an outline. Before exporting, verify that the image has finished loading, the canvas has rendered the latest transform and any custom frame objects have the desired selectable/evented state.

Common failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The mask is offset from the frame | Origins or coordinate systems differ | Set both origins explicitly; use absolute positioning for a canvas-fixed frame and update both mask and border together. |
| Dragging moves the frame instead of the photo | The border shell is selectable or evented | Set selectable: false and evented: false, or route its pointer events to image-translation code. |
| The photo does not fill the slot | Clipping only hides pixels; it does not rescale them | Compute a cover scale and center the image explicitly. |
| Changes appear one gesture late | Fabric has not been told the object is dirty or to redraw | Mark the image dirty when required and call setCoords() and canvas.requestRenderAll(). |
| An inverted group behaves incorrectly | Inversion was applied to a child inside a clip group | Invert at the group level; child inversion is unsupported. |
| Only the visible region should be selectable, but the whole image is hit | Standard object selection is being used | Implement custom hit testing, controls or a frame-first interaction mode; this is not automatic clip-path selection. |
| Touch rotation causes the frame to drift | Image and mask transforms use different spaces | Choose relative or absolute clipping deliberately and apply all gesture transforms in that same model. |

FAQ
Can I use an image as the clip path?
Clip paths are Fabric objects, so use a geometric object or group for predictable clipping. A bitmap alpha mask requires a different compositing design rather than the basic clipPath pattern.
Does clipping permanently delete the hidden pixels?
No. The image object still contains its full source image; clipping changes what Fabric renders. That is why dragging the image can reveal a different part of the source.
