A Hindustan Times report published October 1, 2026, identified a six-to-three-lane convergence and an abrupt lane ending at nearly a right angle as key reported bottlenecks. The account describes opening-period conditions; it does not establish how traffic or the proposed fixes stand now.
Where the reported bottlenecks were
The October 1 Hindustan Times report placed the main conflicts at the connections among the new Mayur Vihar spur, the Sundial Park loop and the existing elevated corridor. It described three lanes arriving from Mayur Vihar and three more from the Sundial loop, converging into a corridor with only three lanes. Additional commissioner of police (zone-II traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta gave that account to the newspaper; it was not presented as an independently verified engineering survey.
The report also described a lane ending abruptly at nearly a right angle where the new spur joins the older flyover. That geometry can force drivers to change lanes quickly near a merge, adding conflict where traffic streams are already competing for limited space.
Why a wider approach can still create a bottleneck
Road capacity depends on what happens after the approach, not just how many lanes feed into it. When six lanes of arriving traffic have to fit into three downstream lanes, drivers must merge, slow or queue. Former Central Road Research Institute traffic engineering and safety division head S Velmurugan told Hindustan Times: “Merging six lanes to three will always lead to a bottleneck.”

An abrupt lane termination compounds that constraint: drivers may have little distance to select a safe gap before reaching the narrower corridor. The report attributes the resulting conflicts and bottlenecks to traffic police and transport experts, but the available reporting does not include engineering drawings, independent traffic counts or a formal post-opening safety assessment. “Design flaws” is therefore best understood as a description of reported geometry and merging problems, not a published final engineering finding.
Which roads the October 1 report said were affected
The report described spillover beyond the flyover into major routes in south and southeast Delhi, naming the Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Mathura Road, DND and Bhairon Marg. Hindustan Times reported that roughly 8 km between Safdarjung Hospital and Sarai Kale Khan took more than an hour on October 1, 2026. That is a dated journey-time observation, not a typical or current travel-time estimate.

What traffic police and experts proposed
Hindustan Times reported proposed traffic-management measures and expert recommendations. The reports do not establish that these changes received engineering approval, were completed, or produced measured results.

The options operate on different timescales: signals, markings and barricades regulate or guide traffic without necessarily changing the road’s capacity, while widening would alter geometry. Improving public transport targets travel demand rather than the merge itself. The reports provide no comparable cost, implementation schedule or outcome data for these proposals.

How the project delay may have changed the context
In an October 2 follow-up, Hindustan Times reported that Phase III was intended to connect Sarai Kale Khan with Mayur Vihar. Construction began in April 2015, with completion originally scheduled for October 2017. According to the newspaper, a 2.5-acre patch of private agricultural land on the eastern Yamuna bank left the final 900 metres unfinished; litigation and acquisition issues prolonged the delay.
The follow-up argued that traffic conditions had changed during the stalled project. It cited VAHAN portal figures for Delhi’s registered-vehicle population: about 5.5 million in 2008 and more than 10 million by 2017, as reported by Hindustan Times. These are figures attributed to VAHAN by the newspaper, not a count of vehicles using Barapullah. Velmurugan told the paper that a corridor designed around earlier traffic volumes might not have anticipated later growth; his cited annual growth assumption should not be read as an official projection.

What is known about conditions now
The October 1 report documents opening-period congestion, not a continuing traffic condition. The Delhi Traffic Police website is an official source for alerts and advisories, but its available indexed material did not provide a Barapullah-specific status update. The current state of the merges—and whether the signal, barricades or other proposals were implemented and effective—was unresolved in the reporting available as of October 3, 2026. A dated police or PWD advisory would be needed to substantiate a later status claim.
