To read a bank earnings release, follow three connected mechanisms: deposits determine how much funding costs, credit quality determines expected and realized loan losses, and interest-rate repricing determines how quickly asset income and funding expense change. A larger deposit balance can help or hurt earnings depending on the rates paid and how the money is deployed; a low allowance ratio can be reassuring or risky depending on loan mix and delinquencies; and a rate change has no single effect because assets and liabilities reset on different schedules.

The practical approach is to read balances, rates, loss measures and management’s explanations together, using matching periods and definitions. The guide below shows exactly what to look for and how to compare banks without mistaking one headline metric for the whole story.

What to read first in a bank earnings release

Start with the quarter’s net interest income, net interest margin, provision for credit losses and key credit-quality tables. Then connect those figures to the balance sheet: deposits and their composition, loans by category, securities, and wholesale funding. Finally, read management’s discussion for the stated causes of changes. A percentage without that context can be misleading.

  • Funding: ending and average deposits, deposit mix, rates paid on interest-bearing deposits and any brokered or wholesale funding.
  • Intermediation: net interest income (NII), net interest margin (NIM), earning-asset yields and funding expense.
  • Credit: delinquency, nonperforming loans or assets, net charge-offs, provision expense and allowance for credit losses.
  • Rate sensitivity: the repricing, maturity and reference-rate assumptions management describes, plus securities valuation and other interest-sensitive items.

Keep average balances separate from period-end balances. Average balances generally drive quarterly income calculations, while ending balances describe the position at the reporting date. Also note whether NIM or yield figures are presented on a tax-equivalent basis and whether the allowance measure covers the same loan population you are comparing.

How deposits affect bank earnings

Deposits are a bank’s main funding source for loans and securities, but they are also an expense when the bank pays interest to retain them. The earnings effect therefore depends on three variables: how much funding is available, what it costs, and what return the bank earns after deploying it.

Read the deposit mix, not just total deposits

Separate noninterest-bearing deposits from interest-bearing checking, savings, money-market and time deposits. Noninterest-bearing balances have no contractual interest expense; interest-bearing balances become more expensive when customers move into higher-rate products or demand higher rates on existing accounts. Two banks with identical total deposits can therefore have very different funding costs.

Look at both the reported average cost of interest-bearing deposits and management’s explanation of mix changes. A shift from operating accounts into certificates of deposit may raise funding expense even if total balances are flat. Conversely, a stable base of low-cost transaction accounts can restrain expense during a rising-rate period.

Deposit growth is not automatically good news

New deposits add useful liquidity only if the bank can deploy them at an attractive risk-adjusted return or invest them safely. If competition forces the bank to pay a high rate, the incremental funding may narrow NIM. If deposits sit in low-yield cash or securities, they may add little current income. Read deposit growth alongside earning-asset growth, asset yields and the cost of deposits.

Check retention and alternative funding

Earnings materials may discuss customer retention, brokered deposits, Federal Home Loan Bank advances, purchased funds or other wholesale borrowing. A greater reliance on wholesale sources can make funding more sensitive to market conditions and maturity dates. The FDIC’s 2026 Risk Review treats deposit growth and wholesale funding as parts of funding risk, alongside liquidity and margin pressure. That does not make wholesale funding inherently unsafe; it means the source, stability and price of funding deserve explicit attention.

An institution-specific illustration

Bank of America’s SEC-filed second-quarter 2026 earnings release, for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, reported that no- and low-cost deposit accounts represented 58% of average total client deposits and carried a weighted average cost of 28 basis points for that quarter. Those figures illustrate the detail to seek in a release; they are specific to that institution and period, not an industry benchmark. The same release reported a 3.87% net interest margin for the bank in that quarter, which likewise should not be generalized to other business models.

What credit quality means for a bank

Credit quality is the ability of borrowers to repay and the resulting probability and severity of loss in the loan portfolio. It is not captured by one ratio. A sound review combines portfolio composition, delinquency, nonperforming exposures, charge-offs, provisions and the allowance for credit losses.

Loan composition sets the starting risk

Identify the proportions of commercial real estate, commercial and industrial, residential real estate, credit cards, auto loans and other consumer categories. Risk differs within each category by borrower, collateral, geography, underwriting vintage and repayment structure. A portfolio becoming more concentrated in one segment can change future loss behavior even before delinquency rises.

Delinquencies and nonperforming assets show emerging stress

Delinquency tables show loans past due by stated intervals, while nonperforming loans or assets generally identify exposures no longer accruing interest or otherwise impaired under the bank’s reporting rules. Track the direction and speed of change, and ask which loan categories are responsible. A stable total can conceal deterioration in a smaller but riskier segment.

Charge-offs are realized losses

Net charge-offs record loans removed from the balance sheet after recoveries. Compare the annualized net charge-off rate with prior quarters, the same quarter of the prior year and the bank’s portfolio mix. A temporary spike may reflect a specific portfolio cleanup; a broad, persistent increase is a different signal.

Provision expense and the allowance are forward-looking estimates

The provision for credit losses is an income-statement expense used to adjust the allowance for credit losses. Under the current expected credit losses (CECL) framework, the allowance reflects expected losses over the contractual life of covered financial assets using reasonable and supportable information. It can rise because expected losses increase, loan balances grow, portfolio composition changes or economic and modeling assumptions are revised. It can fall when expected losses improve or when charge-offs reduce the balance.

The Federal Reserve’s CECL FAQs also describe disclosure of credit-quality indicators by loan vintage. Vintage information helps show whether newer production is performing differently from older loans. The allowance is not a guarantee that losses will stop at that balance; actual outcomes can differ from estimates.

How to interpret an allowance ratio

Releases often show the allowance as a percentage of total loans. Treat that ratio as context, not a verdict. A bank with more secured lending may require a different level than one with more unsecured consumer credit. Compare the ratio with delinquencies, nonperforming measures, charge-offs, loan growth, collateral values and management’s stated assumptions. Rapid loan growth can make a stable ratio less reassuring if the newest vintages have not seasoned.

How interest rates affect bank earnings

Interest-rate changes flow through a bank primarily by changing interest income, interest expense and the economic value of assets and liabilities. The result depends on repricing speed, reference rates, maturities and customer behavior rather than on whether rates simply moved up or down.

Repricing and maturity mismatch

Loans with floating rates may reset quickly, while fixed-rate loans continue earning their contracted yield. Deposits can reprice immediately, gradually or not at all, depending on product and competition. If asset yields adjust faster and more fully than funding costs, NII may rise; if deposit costs reprice faster than loan yields, NII may fall. The interagency policy statement on interest-rate risk identifies this as repricing or maturity-mismatch risk.

Yield-curve and basis risk

A bank may fund a long-term asset with a short-term liability or use instruments tied to different benchmarks. A change in the shape of the yield curve can therefore affect income differently from a parallel move in all rates. Basis risk arises when assets and liabilities reference rates that do not move together. Read which benchmarks management cites, not merely the central-bank policy rate.

Option risk and customer behavior

Borrowers may refinance when rates fall, shortening loan duration. Deposit customers may move money between products when rates rise, changing funding costs and balances. These embedded options alter the timing of cash flows. The interagency policy statement also lists option risk among the channels through which rates affect results.

Earnings sensitivity versus economic value

Separate near-term accounting earnings from the economic value of the balance sheet. A rate move can change the market value of securities and the present value of expected cash flows even when the immediate effect on quarterly NII is limited. Unrealized securities losses, liquidity needs and future funding costs may therefore matter alongside current-period margin. The FDIC’s 2026 Risk Review discusses securities values, profitability, liquidity, deposits, wholesale funding and margins as connected concerns.

The official interagency description is direct: “Changes in interest rates affect a bank’s earnings by changing its net interest income and the level of other interest-sensitive income and operating expenses.” It describes a transmission mechanism, not a forecast that rates will help or hurt every bank in the same way.

What net interest margin tells you—and what it does not

NIM summarizes net interest income relative to earning assets, making it useful for tracking direction and comparing a bank with its own history. It does not explain the cause of a change by itself. Decompose it into earning-asset yields, funding costs, average balances and mix.

For example, a quarter-to-quarter margin change may reflect investment-portfolio effects, deposit mix, loan pricing, hedging or a different volume of earning assets. Management’s bridge from the prior quarter is more informative than the headline percentage. Confirm whether the presentation is tax-equivalent and whether the denominator uses average earning assets.

A step-by-step method for reading a release

  1. Set the comparison period. Use the same quarter year over year and the immediately preceding quarter when both are available. Mark whether each figure is an average or an ending balance.
  2. Map funding. Record total deposits, noninterest-bearing and interest-bearing components, average deposit cost, and any change in brokered or wholesale funding.
  3. Follow deployment. Review loan and securities growth, earning-asset yields and the stated use of new deposits.
  4. Reconcile NII and NIM. Read the bank’s explanation for volume, rate, mix, investment-portfolio and deposit-cost effects.
  5. Build a credit dashboard. Note loan composition, delinquencies, nonperforming assets, net charge-offs, provision expense and the allowance ratio.
  6. Test the allowance narrative. Ask whether changes reflect growth, charge-offs, updated assumptions, portfolio migration or economic outlook.
  7. Assess rate exposure. Identify repricing schedules, benchmark differences, deposit betas or other sensitivity measures the bank discloses, and distinguish earnings sensitivity from securities valuation.
  8. Read management’s caveats. Earnings-call comments and the 10-Q or 10-K may define metrics or explain one-time items that a summary release omits.

How to compare two banks fairly

Comparison area Measures to place side by side Question the numbers answer
Funding Deposit growth, mix, average cost, brokered and wholesale funding How stable and expensive is the funding base?
Intermediation NII, NIM, earning-asset yields, funding expense Is the bank earning more after paying for funds?
Credit Portfolio mix, delinquency, nonperforming trends, charge-offs, provision, allowance Are losses emerging, being realized or being reserved for?
Definitions and timing Same quarter or year; average versus ending balances; tax-equivalent and allowance definitions Are the figures genuinely comparable?
Business context Size, geography, loan categories and operating model Does a difference reflect strategy rather than management quality?

There is no universal “good” deposit cost, allowance ratio or NIM that applies to every bank. Sector information, such as the FDIC’s Q1 2026 Quarterly Banking Profile, can provide aggregate context for net interest income and allowance measures, but its tables and definitions must be checked before using any figure as a benchmark. A bank’s own filing remains the primary source for its risk and earnings.

Common interpretation mistakes

  • Calling deposit growth a profit increase: ignore the rate paid and whether funds earn a sufficient return.
  • Treating NIM as a complete diagnosis: skip the underlying yields, funding costs and mix explanation.
  • Using the allowance ratio alone: overlook loan composition, vintage, collateral, delinquencies and charge-offs.
  • Assuming higher rates always help: forget deposit repricing, fixed-rate assets, curve shape, basis and option risk.
  • Mixing incompatible figures: compare average deposits with ending loans, different quarters or different tax-equivalent conventions.
  • Confusing unrealized securities losses with current NII: fail to separate balance-sheet value effects from period income.

Where to verify the details

For a specific institution, use its latest earnings release, Form 10-Q or 10-K and earnings-call materials. The FDIC’s 2026 Risk Review provides a broad discussion of funding, interest-rate and credit risks faced by banks in 2025. The FDIC Q1 2026 Quarterly Banking Profile supplies aggregate condition and income data. The Federal Reserve CECL FAQs explain expected-loss methodology and related disclosures. These sources serve different purposes: sector context, institution-specific reporting and accounting guidance should not be substituted for one another.
