Bang & Olufsen Beosound Explore review: outdoor strengths, sound trade-offs and key specs

Yes, the Beosound Explore is designed for outdoor use. Bang & Olufsen gives it an IP67 rating, a compact 637 g body, 360-degree sound direction and a manufacturer-rated battery life of up to 27 hours. The trade-off is equally clear: independent reviews find detailed, widely dispersed sound, but not the deep, forceful bass some listeners want. Its Bluetooth-only connection options are also narrow, and the US listing showed $299 when checked in 2026.

Explore makes the most sense for buyers who value weather resistance, easy carrying and broad sound coverage more than bass weight, Wi-Fi features or the lowest possible price.

Verdict: a tough, portable speaker with a deliberate bass compromise

The Beosound Explore is a compact Bluetooth speaker built around outdoor durability rather than maximum low-end impact. Its sealed, rugged enclosure, IP67 certification, carry-friendly dimensions and claimed long battery life suit hiking, camping, patios and other places where a speaker may encounter dust or fresh water. The 360-degree design is intended to keep sound intelligible around the speaker instead of forcing everyone to sit in front of it.

That design brief explains the main criticism in independent reviews. TechRadar described the Explore as a beautifully tough Bluetooth speaker with detailed sound and panache, while noting that it lacks grippy bass weight. RTINGS likewise considers it good for outdoor use and says its directivity helps listeners hear audio clearly from most angles. Those are review observations, not measurements or listening tests performed for this article.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose Explore when resilience, portability and even coverage are your priorities. Look elsewhere if your first priority is room-filling bass, a more balanced out-of-box profile, Wi-Fi or a wider range of wired connections.

Beosound Explore specifications

The figures below come from Bang & Olufsen’s official specification page. They describe the manufacturer’s design and test claims; they are not independent laboratory results.

Specification Beosound Explore
Drivers Two 1.8-inch full-range drivers
Amplification 2 × 30 W Class D
Sound direction 360-degree sound direction
Cabinet Closed-box design
Frequency range 56–22,700 Hz at -10 dB
Maximum loudness 91 dB SPL at 1 metre
Bass capability 59 dB SPL at 1 metre
Wireless connection Bluetooth 5.2
Bluetooth codec SBC
Multipoint Up to two devices
Stereo pairing Two Beosound Explore speakers
Charging port USB-C
Weight 637 g
Dimensions 81 × 124 × 81 mm
Water and dust resistance IP67
Battery claim Up to 27 hours of playtime
Charge time Approximately two hours

A frequency-range figure extending to 56 Hz does not guarantee strong output at that frequency. The separate bass-capability figure and independent listening comments are more useful clues to how much physical low-end impact to expect. In practical terms, Explore is specified to play cleanly across a broad range, but the evidence does not support describing it as a bass-heavy speaker.

Outdoor durability: what IP67 does and does not mean

Bang & Olufsen Support gives a direct answer to the most common question: Yes, Beosound Explore can be used outdoors and is IP67 certified. The same support explanation says the rating covers submersion in fresh water up to one metre deep for up to 30 minutes.

IP67 combines dust protection with a limited water-immersion condition. It is useful protection for rain, splashes, damp grass and an accidental drop into a freshwater pool, but it is not a license to leave the speaker underwater indefinitely. The support guidance specifically excludes salty or ionized water. Seawater, salt pools and some treated or chemically different water therefore fall outside the stated condition.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The support article also warns that IP67 does not guarantee the speaker’s appearance remains unaffected. Water exposure can leave marks, discoloration or cosmetic wear even when the enclosure continues to function. Rinse or wipe the speaker according to the manufacturer’s care guidance, let it dry fully and keep the USB-C port dry before charging. The rating protects against a defined exposure; it does not make corrosion, sand abrasion or cosmetic damage impossible.

Outdoor situations where Explore fits well

  • Backyards, balconies and patios where rain or splashes are possible.
  • Camping and hiking, where 637 g is easier to carry than a larger home speaker.
  • Group listening around a table or campsite, where 360-degree coverage avoids a single listening position.
  • Freshwater trips when the speaker can be kept within the one-metre, 30-minute immersion limit.

Situations that need extra caution

  • Beach use or boating in seawater, because the stated IP67 condition excludes salty water.
  • Hot tubs and treated pools, where ionized or chemically altered water is not covered by the support explanation.
  • Long-term outdoor storage, which can expose the finish to sun, grit and temperature swings beyond the immersion test.
  • Charging immediately after a splash or drop; dry the port first.

Battery life and USB-C charging

Bang & Olufsen lists up to 27 hours of battery playtime and approximately two hours for charging. “Up to” is a best-case manufacturer claim, not a guaranteed figure for every listening session. Volume, Bluetooth distance, music content, temperature and whether the speaker is being used while charging can all change actual endurance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No standardized independent battery measurement is established in the available evidence. Treat the published figure as a planning ceiling rather than a promise that every outdoor trip will last 27 hours. For a weekend away, check the battery before leaving and carry a charging source that can provide USB-C power. The speaker’s documented charging interface is USB-C; the evidence does not establish a special cable or proprietary accessory requirement.

What the battery claim means for different uses

  • Short outings: a full charge should provide considerable headroom if playback volume is moderate.
  • Long days outdoors: plan around less than the maximum claim, particularly at high volume or in cold weather.
  • Shared use: multipoint can reduce connection switching, but two connected devices still consume power through normal Bluetooth operation.
  • Storage: avoid leaving the battery empty for extended periods; recharge before the next trip.

Sound quality: detail and dispersion ahead of bass weight

TechRadar’s review characterizes Explore as detailed and lively, but says it lacks “grippy” bass weight. That description points to a speaker that can make vocals, guitars, percussion and other midrange information easy to follow without delivering the chesty low-end pressure of a larger enclosure. It is an independent review impression, not a measurement made for this article.

RTINGS’ assessment emphasizes directivity. It considers Explore suitable for outdoor use because listeners can hear audio clearly from most angles. That matters at a picnic table or campsite: people do not have to sit directly in front of the front panel to get a coherent presentation. The 360-degree specification supports that design goal, although room reflections, placement and volume still affect what each listener hears.

The closed-box cabinet and two full-range drivers keep the design compact. The trade-off is limited air movement compared with a physically larger speaker. The official 56–22,700 Hz range should therefore be read alongside the independent comments: Explore covers the audible spectrum on paper, but the available evidence does not show that it produces deep bass with the authority of a larger model.

How the sound suits common content

  • Speech and podcasts: broad dispersion can make spoken audio easy to follow when people are moving around.
  • Acoustic, pop and rock: the reported detail and lively presentation should favor vocals and midrange instruments.
  • Electronic, hip-hop and bass-heavy film soundtracks: expect less physical low-end impact than from a larger, bass-oriented speaker.
  • Outdoor background music: even coverage is often more valuable than a narrow sweet spot.

Connections and everyday usability

Explore uses Bluetooth 5.2 with the SBC codec. That is a straightforward wireless setup for phones, tablets and computers, but the specification does not list Wi-Fi streaming, a 3.5 mm input or a higher-bandwidth Bluetooth codec. Buyers who need network playback, a wired source or a particular premium codec should verify those requirements before buying; they are not documented here.

Multipoint for two devices

Bang & Olufsen lists multipoint support for up to two devices. Two people can keep their phones associated with the speaker and take turns playing audio without fully repeating the pairing process. Multipoint behavior can vary by operating-system notifications and active media sessions, so pause playback on one device before starting another if the hand-off does not occur as expected.

Stereo pairing

The specification also lists stereo pairing between two Beosound Explore speakers. Two units can therefore be used as a left-right pair when a wider stereo image is more important than carrying one speaker. The supplied evidence does not state the exact button sequence or app path, so follow the current Bang & Olufsen instructions for the pairing procedure rather than relying on an assumed control layout.

Bluetooth setup

  1. Charge the speaker and turn it on in a dry location.
  2. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet or computer you want to use.
  3. Select Beosound Explore from the available-device list and confirm pairing.
  4. Start playback and adjust volume from the source device or the speaker controls.
  5. If a second device is already connected through multipoint, pause its media before handing playback to the first device.

Menu names differ between Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. If Explore does not appear, turn Bluetooth off and on at the source, move closer to the speaker, and remove an old Explore entry before pairing again.

Portability, construction and placement

At 637 g and 81 × 124 × 81 mm, Explore is compact enough for a day pack while still substantial enough to avoid feeling like a disposable mini speaker. The dimensions are close to a short cylinder, so it can fit in many side pockets, though the exact fit depends on the bag. The rugged construction is a functional advantage outdoors, not merely a cosmetic detail.

Placement changes the result. On an open table, the 360-degree design can spread sound around a group. Near a wall, reflections may add apparent volume but can also change tonal balance. On soft ground, avoid burying the grille or blocking openings with clothing and gear. Keep the speaker upright and stable when possible, especially in wet conditions.

How Explore compares with other options

The right comparison depends on what you are willing to trade. The reviewed sources mention the Beosound A1 (2nd Gen), Sonos Roam and Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6 as alternatives or comparison points, but they do not provide a complete, current specification set for each model. The table therefore limits itself to claims established by those sources.

Option What the reviewed evidence establishes Decision implication
Beosound Explore IP67; compact 637 g body; 360-degree direction; manufacturer claim of up to 27 hours; detailed, widely dispersed sound; limited deep-bass weight in independent reviews. Best fit when outdoor resilience, carrying size and all-around coverage outrank bass impact and broad connectivity.
Beosound A1 (2nd Gen) Used by TechRadar as a comparison point in its Explore review; the available material does not establish a full current specification or a definitive winner. Compare current sound, durability, battery and price directly if considering another compact speaker from the same family.
Sonos Roam Named as an alternative in the reviewed material, without source-backed comparative specifications here. Check current connectivity, water rating, battery testing and ecosystem requirements before choosing it over Explore.
Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6 RTINGS says it has a more balanced out-of-box sound profile and can reproduce deeper bass than Explore. More suitable to investigate if tonal balance and bass depth matter more than Explore’s compact outdoor design.

This is not a universal ranking. A larger or differently tuned speaker may sound fuller but be harder to carry or less suitable around water. A compact outdoor model may be easier to live with while sounding less substantial on bass-heavy tracks.

Price, colors, trial and warranty

The Bang & Olufsen US product listing displayed a price of $299 when checked in 2026. That is a time- and region-specific listing, not a permanent price or a claim about other countries. The same listing showed Black Anthracite, Green, Bonfire Orange and Grey Mist, plus a 30-day trial and a two-year warranty at that time.

Prices, colors, stock and return terms can change. Confirm the local price, taxes, delivery conditions, trial window and warranty exclusions on the page where you intend to buy. At $299, Explore should be evaluated as a premium compact speaker: its value depends on whether the IP67 construction, finish and portability justify paying more than a less rugged or larger bass-focused alternative.

Who should buy the Beosound Explore?

It is a strong fit if you need

  • A speaker specifically designed for outdoor carry and accidental freshwater exposure.
  • Sound that remains intelligible from several angles around a group.
  • A compact body weighing less than 700 g.
  • Simple Bluetooth playback with two-device multipoint.
  • The option to pair two identical units for stereo.

Consider another model if you need

  • Deep, forceful bass as the defining part of the listening experience.
  • Wi-Fi streaming, wired inputs or Bluetooth codecs beyond SBC.
  • A larger room-filling presentation that does not prioritize portability.
  • A lower price than the current premium listing.
  • A speaker intended for repeated saltwater exposure.

Practical care and troubleshooting

The speaker will not pair

  1. Confirm that Explore is powered on and within short Bluetooth range.
  2. Pause playback on any already connected device, especially when multipoint is active.
  3. Toggle Bluetooth on the source device and select Explore again.
  4. If the old pairing record is corrupted, forget Explore on the source and pair it as a new device.
  5. Move away from other active Bluetooth devices if discovery remains unreliable.

Playback cuts out outdoors

Keep the source device near the speaker and avoid placing either behind a body, metal container or dense equipment. Bluetooth performance depends on the environment; the supplied specifications do not state a guaranteed range. If two devices are connected, disconnect the one not in use to simplify the wireless path.

The speaker was splashed or submerged

Remove it from the water, wipe away moisture and allow the enclosure and USB-C port to dry completely before charging. Stay within the stated freshwater, one-metre and 30-minute conditions. Do not treat IP67 as protection against seawater, ionized water or unlimited immersion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery life seems shorter than expected

Check listening volume, temperature and how long the speaker has been used since its last full charge. The published runtime is an “up to” claim, and no independent test result establishes a universal operating time. Recharge through USB-C and allow approximately two hours for the manufacturer’s stated charge period.

Final buying guidance

Beosound Explore is a focused product rather than an all-purpose sound system. Its strongest case is the combination of IP67-rated outdoor protection, a small 637 g form factor, 360-degree coverage and a long manufacturer-claimed runtime. Its main compromises are equally important: independent reviewers hear less deep-bass weight than from larger alternatives, Bluetooth with SBC is the documented connection path, and the US price observed in 2026 places it in premium territory.

Buy it when you will regularly carry a speaker outside and value durability and even coverage more than bass-heavy playback. Before ordering, verify the current local price, availability, return period and warranty, and decide whether the published battery claim and Bluetooth feature set meet your actual trips and devices.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
