Are Abu Dhabi investors buying Bandhan Bank?
Not on the facts reported. The discussions concern BFSL, Bandhan Bank’s promoter, rather than a confirmed direct purchase of the listed bank’s shares. IHC was described as one of the parties in early-stage discussions, based on people familiar with the matter cited by The Economic Times. The paper said BFSL was working with Jefferies to find strategic investors for 25–32%, with the aim of giving early financial investors an exit opportunity.

Early-stage discussions are not an offer, a signed agreement, or a completed investment. The report explicitly says there is no guarantee they will lead to a transaction. It also does not set out confirmed deal terms, a transaction price, or a timetable.
Who may be selling a stake in Bandhan’s promoter?
The Economic Times reported that Singapore’s GIC and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) together held 30.3% of BFSL at the end of March and were looking for a full or partial exit. People cited by the newspaper estimated that stake could be worth $500–600 million. That is a reported estimate, not an agreed valuation or confirmed sale price.

The report also said potential investors canvassed included First Abu Dhabi Bank, Qatar Investment Authority, and private-equity firms Carlyle and EQT. Being named as an entity approached or canvassed does not show that it made an offer or entered negotiations. The reporting does not establish competing bids or allow a comparison of price, terms, or likelihood of completion.
Why does the promoter’s stake matter?
The report said Bandhan Financial Holdings held 37.5% of Bandhan Bank at the end of June. It also described the bank’s licensing agreement with the Reserve Bank of India as requiring that holding to be reduced to 26% by 2030. That ownership requirement provides context for why promoter-level stake changes may matter, but it does not itself confirm that the reported investor discussions will satisfy the requirement or receive regulatory approval.

The entities and percentages in the report refer to different levels of ownership: GIC and IFC’s reported combined holding is in BFSL, while the 37.5% figure is the reported holding of Bandhan Financial Holdings in the bank. A possible change in BFSL ownership should not be confused with a confirmed transfer of the listed bank’s shares.
What else was affecting the bank’s stock?
The Economic Times said Bandhan Bank shares had fallen sharply after the bank cut its FY27 return-on-assets guidance following its June-quarter results in July. It also reported that the bank reduced its FY27 loan-growth outlook to the lower end of its previous 14–15% guidance range. The newspaper cited concerns involving costs, net interest margin, asset quality, supply chains, energy costs, and the monsoon.

In its account, the paper quoted JP Morgan analysts Anuj Singla and Harsh Wardhan Modi as saying the growth reduction was pre-emptive and that on-the-ground asset-quality trends remained benign, with improving delinquency trends in newer and older loan vintages. The analysts also said credit-cost guidance remained at 1.6–1.8%. This is the analysts’ characterization as quoted by the newspaper, not a direct statement from the bank.

Is the Bandhan Bank stake deal confirmed?
No. The report describes discussions, not a completed or announced transaction. Bandhan founder and chairman Chandra Shekhar Ghosh told The Economic Times, “We don’t comment on market speculation.” A First Abu Dhabi Bank spokesperson told the newspaper, “As a matter of policy, we do not comment on individual client relationships, transactions, or market speculation.” Neither response confirms a deal. The newspaper also quoted an investor examining the matter as saying, “Discussions are picking up momentum, but the contours are evolving,” while describing the transaction as complicated and partly dependent on regulators. That unnamed investor’s view is not confirmation either.

Readers following the story can look for a dated company or exchange disclosure rather than treating market speculation as an announcement.
