They also differ from one another. One may emphasize tactical combat, another open-ended quest solutions, and another literary dialogue. Treat the category as a design era and a family resemblance, not as a promise that every old game plays identically. The useful contrast is between an older, text-led approach and Baldur’s Gate 3’s modern presentation and systems feedback.

How Baldur’s Gate 3 handles combat
Baldur’s Gate 3 uses turn-based combat built on the fifth-edition Dungeons & Dragons ruleset. This reactivity works alongside the party system. A conversation choice can affect who approves of you, a tactical decision can remove or preserve an option, and the way you approach a quest can change what information or allies are available later. The result is a role-playing experience where experimentation is part of the narrative rather than something confined to combat.
Why classic writing still feels different
Classic CRPGs are attractive to readers who want authored, text-heavy storytelling. Their dialogue boxes, descriptions, journals, and party banter ask you to read more and imagine more of the scene yourself. The slower delivery can give a setting, a moral dilemma, or a character’s voice room to linger without cinematic camera work competing for attention.
That does not establish that one era has objectively better writing. It is a difference in delivery and emphasis. Baldur’s Gate 3 puts more of the performance on animation, voice, facial expression, and staging. A classic places more of the performance in prose, player interpretation, and the rhythm of choosing the next line of text.

Solo and multiplayer considerations
Baldur’s Gate 3 supports solo play or a party of up to four players. Solo play gives one person complete control over the group and the story’s direction. Multiplayer adds negotiation: other players can pursue their own conversations, take different tactical risks, and influence the party’s priorities. Use this test before choosing:
- Ask how you react to manuals and tooltips. If reading rules sounds satisfying, a classic may be a good first choice. If you would rather learn through guided feedback, choose Baldur’s Gate 3.
- Decide whether camera movement matters. A modern 3D camera and voiced staging favor Baldur’s Gate 3; a fixed or isometric view favors the classic style.
- Choose your preferred failure mode. Baldur’s Gate 3 usually makes a failed plan visible in the immediate encounter. Classics may make you investigate a build, rule, or party setup before you understand the cause.

If you play in short sessions and want frequent cinematic payoffs, Baldur’s Gate 3 generally fits better. If you enjoy settling into a long text-rich evening and letting the game’s systems reveal themselves, the classic format may be more satisfying.

Larian’s launch communication said Baldur’s Gate 3’s minimum PC requirements were raised to reflect launch realities. Requirements, supported operating systems, patches, and platform availability can change, so check the current official system-requirements information for the edition and device you intend to use rather than relying on an old launch article.
This matters especially when comparing a modern 3D game with older CRPGs. The classics generally place less demand on current hardware, but compatibility, display scaling, input support, and storefront versions can vary. A game being old does not guarantee a frictionless setup on every modern computer.
