Bad Omen is now a deliberate effect in Minecraft 1.21 and later. Defeating a raid captain outside a raid gives you an Ominous Bottle rather than applying the effect immediately. Drinking that bottle applies Bad Omen; entering a village then converts it into Raid Omen, starts a 30-second countdown, and launches a raid if the countdown ends. Drink milk during the countdown to cancel the event.

What Bad Omen does in Minecraft 1.21+
Bad Omen is an effect that lets you opt into difficult events. In current Java and Bedrock editions, it is not an automatic punishment for killing a raid captain. You choose when to activate it by consuming an Ominous Bottle.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe effect has two main destinations:
- A village: Bad Omen changes to Raid Omen. A 30-second countdown begins, and a raid starts when that countdown expires.
- A Trial Chamber: Bad Omen can become Trial Omen near a non-ominous Trial Spawner, opting you into a more difficult Ominous Trial.
This redesign separates obtaining the effect from using it. You can carry a bottle safely, prepare defenses, and decide whether to start a village raid or an ominous trial later.
How you get Bad Omen now
Defeat a raid captain outside a raid
A raid captain is the banner-carrying hostile illager encountered outside an active raid. In 1.21 and later, defeating one outside a raid drops an Ominous Bottle. The bottle is the item that matters: picking it up does not apply Bad Omen.
Find an Ominous Bottle in a trial-chamber vault
Ominous Bottles can also be found in trial-chamber vaults. This gives you another way to obtain the effect without hunting a captain in the overworld.
#1 Best Overall
Keep the bottle unopened
An Ominous Bottle is harmless while it remains in your inventory. If you do not want Bad Omen, do not consume it. Store it in a chest or leave it in your inventory until you have chosen a destination and prepared for the consequences.
Ominous Bottle levels and duration
There are five Ominous Bottle variants, corresponding to the five Bad Omen levels. Consuming a bottle applies its level of Bad Omen for 1 hour 40 minutes, according to Mojang’s 2024 release information.
| Property | Current mechanic |
|---|---|
| Activation item | Ominous Bottle |
| Number of bottle variants | Five, one for each Bad Omen level |
| Effect duration | 1 hour 40 minutes after consumption |
| Captain behavior outside a raid | Drops an Ominous Bottle instead of applying Bad Omen directly |
| Java and Bedrock scope | Current 1.21-and-later mechanics |
The level on the bottle is important because it is carried into the event you trigger. Do not drink a bottle casually if you are unsure which level it has or whether you are ready for the associated event.
What happens when you enter a village
Bad Omen becomes Raid Omen
Entering a village while Bad Omen is active transforms the effect into Raid Omen. This is the warning phase immediately before a raid. Mojang’s Java 1.21 notes describe the change plainly: “Bad Omen no longer triggers a Raid directly when entering a Village.” Instead, the game gives you a short decision window.
The 30-second countdown
Raid Omen lasts for 30 seconds. During this countdown, the raid has not started yet. You can leave the village, drink milk, or use the time to confirm that your defenses and supplies are ready.

If the countdown expires while the event is valid, the raid begins at that village. Once that happens, the situation is no longer a pending Raid Omen event; you are dealing with an active raid and must respond accordingly.

How to remove Bad Omen or cancel a pending raid
Use a milk bucket
Milk is the direct removal method. Drink a milk bucket while Bad Omen is active to clear the effect. If you have already entered a village and the effect has changed to Raid Omen, drink milk during the 30-second countdown. Mojang’s release notes state that players can drink a Bucket of Milk to clear Raid Omen and prevent the raid from starting.
- Put a milk bucket on your hotbar.
- If you have Bad Omen, stay away from villages until you decide what to do.
- If you have entered a village and see Raid Omen, use the milk bucket immediately.
- Wait for the effect indicator to disappear before returning to normal activities.
Milk clears effects rather than selectively preserving them, so use it when your priority is ending the event, not when you are trying to retain Bad Omen for a later activity.
What if you do not have milk?
The reliable preparation is to obtain a milk bucket before approaching a village with Bad Omen. The redesigned system gives you a 30-second warning, but that window is only useful if milk is already accessible. Leaving the village can also prevent you from deliberately allowing the countdown to finish, but carrying milk is the dependable cancellation plan.
How to stop a raid from starting
The safest sequence is to treat every village approach as a controlled decision.
- Do not drink the bottle early. Keep the Ominous Bottle unopened while traveling or gathering supplies.
- Prepare a milk bucket. Put it where you can reach it without searching through storage.
- Choose the village deliberately. Do not enter a village while Bad Omen is active merely to pass through it.
- Watch for Raid Omen. The transformation signals that the 30-second countdown has begun.
- Drink milk before the countdown ends. This clears Raid Omen and prevents the raid from starting.
If you are already inside a village and do not intend to fight, do not wait for the raid bar or hostile waves. The cancellation step belongs to the Raid Omen countdown, before the raid begins.
How to start an intentional raid safely
Bad Omen is useful when you want a raid, but activation should be planned rather than accidental.
Rank #3
Before drinking the Ominous Bottle
- Decide which village will host the event.
- Bring a milk bucket in case you change your mind.
- Prepare the equipment, food, shelter, and defensive layout you normally rely on for a major hostile encounter.
- Confirm that you understand the bottle’s level before consuming it.
- Keep the route to the village clear so you are not forced to enter a different settlement.
During the village approach
Consume the bottle only when you are close to the village you intend to use. Then enter that village and observe the Raid Omen countdown. If your defenses are not ready, drink milk during the countdown instead of allowing the raid to start.
Why the new system is safer
Before 1.21, killing a raid captain directly granted Bad Omen. In current Java and Bedrock versions, the captain drops an Ominous Bottle, and consumption is the deliberate activation step. That extra step prevents an accidental village raid immediately after a captain fight.
Bad Omen in Trial Chambers
Trial Omen is a different event path
Bad Omen is also an optional Ominous Event in Trial Chambers. Near a non-ominous Trial Spawner, the effect can transform into Trial Omen rather than producing a village raid.
How long Trial Omen lasts
Trial Omen lasts for 15 minutes multiplied by the transformed Bad Omen level. The level therefore affects not only the strength of the challenge but also the length of the Trial Omen state.
What an Ominous Trial changes
Ominous Trials are described in Mojang’s 1.21 notes as more challenging optional events with unique rewards. They are tied to Trial Chambers and their spawners, not to a village boundary. If your goal is an ominous trial, take the bottle to a Trial Chamber and approach a non-ominous Trial Spawner rather than entering a village.
Raid versus Ominous Trial
Both events use Bad Omen, but the trigger, timing, and objective differ.
Rank #4
| Comparison | Village raid | Ominous Trial |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger location | A village | A Trial Chamber near a non-ominous Trial Spawner |
| Intermediate state | Raid Omen | Trial Omen |
| Warning or transformation timing | 30-second Raid Omen countdown | Trial Omen transformation at the spawner |
| Difficulty | Standard raid challenge, with the bottle’s Bad Omen level carried into the event | More challenging optional event |
| Rewards | Raid rewards associated with the raid itself | Unique rewards described for Ominous Trials |
| Cancellation priority | Drink milk during Raid Omen to prevent the raid | Do not approach the spawner if you do not want to opt into the ominous event |
The practical distinction is location: a village converts Bad Omen into Raid Omen, while a suitable Trial Chamber spawner can convert it into Trial Omen. Carrying the same bottle does not force you into one event until you enter the relevant area.

You picked up a bottle but are not ready
Do nothing. Keep it unopened and store it safely. The item itself does not create Bad Omen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Avoid villages while the effect is active. If you need to remove it, drink milk before entering a village.
You entered a village and the countdown appeared
Use a milk bucket during the Raid Omen countdown. That is the specific window for preventing the raid.
You want a raid but need more preparation time
Leave the village or clear the pending event with milk, then prepare again. Do not rely on an unplanned countdown to finish while you gather equipment.
You want an Ominous Trial instead of a raid
Keep away from villages and take the active effect to a Trial Chamber. Approach a non-ominous Trial Spawner when you are ready for the optional harder event.

Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming a captain kill still applies Bad Omen
That was the pre-1.21 behavior. In current versions, look for the Ominous Bottle and decide whether to consume it.
Entering a village “just for a moment”
The village boundary is the important trigger. If Bad Omen is active, even a brief visit can start Raid Omen. Keep the effect cleared or carry milk before making a stop.
Confusing Bad Omen with Raid Omen
Bad Omen is the portable effect obtained by consuming a bottle. Raid Omen is the 30-second village countdown created from it. The response is different: avoid villages while you have Bad Omen; drink milk immediately if Raid Omen has begun.
Drinking milk after the raid has already started
The documented prevention method is clearing Raid Omen during its countdown. Once the raid has started, milk is no longer a way to undo the already-active raid.

Taking Bad Omen to the wrong destination
A village and a Trial Chamber are separate event paths. Decide whether you want a raid or an Ominous Trial before consuming the bottle, then travel to the matching location.
Version history: what changed in 1.21
Prior to 1.21, defeating a raid captain directly granted Bad Omen. The 1.21 redesign changed that interaction in both Java and Bedrock: the captain drops an Ominous Bottle, and the player must consume it to activate the effect.
The village behavior changed as well. Bad Omen no longer triggers a raid immediately upon entering a village. It first becomes Raid Omen and provides a 30-second countdown. This makes milk a deliberate prevention tool rather than an emergency response to an already instantaneous trigger.
