Yes—but the clearest example here is X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009): ComicBook.com calls the film awful and the game solid. The game earned that praise by turning Wolverine’s healing factor and brutal fighting style into play, rather than relying only on the movie’s plot. Spider-Man 2 and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay are also standout movie-related games, but the sources reviewed do not establish that their films were bad.
What makes a bad-movie, great-game pairing?
The premise needs two separate judgments: evidence that the film was poorly received, and a reason to think its game works on its own. A well-regarded tie-in is not automatically a game based on a bad movie. On that stricter test, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the strongest match among these examples. The other two are worthwhile recommendations, but they belong in a different category.

The strongest match: X-Men Origins: Wolverine
ComicBook.com contrasts the film’s poor reputation with a solid game from Raven Software. The adaptation’s appeal is not that it fixes the film’s story; it gives the character’s defining traits room to drive the action. Wolverine fights at close range, and his healing factor is shown in real time as he takes damage and recovers. Those ideas make the violence feel tied to playing as Wolverine, rather than just watching him on screen.
The game’s mature, graphic combat was not identical across every release: ComicBook.com notes an M-rated edition “if you’re on the right platform.” That is a platform- and edition-specific distinction, not a description of every version. Check the exact release before buying or assuming it contains the same content.

Great movie tie-ins, not proven bad-movie examples
Spider-Man 2 (2004): traversal makes the city the attraction
The game’s defining pleasure is moving through Manhattan. Web-swinging and free exploration give Spider-Man’s abilities a satisfying game form, and make getting across the city part of the fun rather than a gap between missions. VGC describes it as a strong superhero game and tie-in; GamesRadar+ also highlights free-roaming New York.
It is not flawless. In his June 30, 2004 GameSpot review, Jeff Gerstmann wrote, “Spider-Man 2 is a good game, but its repetitive gameplay, combined with an open-ended design, also makes it feel like a missed opportunity.” He identifies swinging and exploring Manhattan as the main strengths, while the repeated activities and limited content temper the praise. The sources here do not establish the film’s reception as bad, so this is a great tie-in, not evidence for the title’s strict premise.

VGC praises its blend of stealth and action. GamesRadar+ points to its limited HUD and original story as features that help it stand apart.

Why some movie games work better than others
These examples suggest a useful way to judge adaptations: look for a mechanic that belongs to the character or world, not merely a plot summary turned into missions. Spider-Man’s swinging makes traversal expressive; Riddick’s stealth-action mix supports a story about escaping a prison; Wolverine’s healing factor and close-quarters combat make his physicality central to play. Each approach gives the game a reason to exist beyond the film’s release.
Release pressure can also shape what makes it into a tie-in. VGC says timing affected content in Spider-Man 2, and its discussion of GoldenEye 007 describes Rare having enough development time to move beyond an on-rails concept and build a first-person shooter. That is a useful contrast about creative latitude, not proof that rushed movie games are always worse. GoldenEye is not a bad-movie example here: the sources establish it as an influential game adaptation, not a poorly received film.

- Confirm the exact game and platform. The M-rated Wolverine edition is platform-specific; do not assume all versions share the same rating or content.
- Set expectations for older design. Spider-Man 2’s swinging remains its cited strength, but its repetitive activities and limited content are part of the contemporary review’s assessment.
