1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBoth BackstopJS and Playwright can compare screenshots with reference images. Choose BackstopJS if you want a scenario-based visual testing workflow with a dedicated report and an explicit approval command. Choose Playwright if screenshot assertions fit best inside your existing Playwright Test suite. That is a workflow-based recommendation, not a performance verdict.
How the two screenshot-testing workflows differ
| Question | BackstopJS | Playwright Test |
|---|---|---|
| Where do checks live? | In a configuration file containing viewports and scenarios, commonly organized around page URLs. | In Playwright Test, using the expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() assertion. |
| How are baselines created? | Run a test capture, review the report, then approve acceptable changes to update references. | The first test run creates snapshots; later runs compare captures against them. |
| How are changes reviewed? | The documented workflow includes an in-browser report for reference, test and diff images, plus CLI and JUnit reports. | Snapshots are stored beside tests in a separate snapshots directory and should be committed and reviewed. The reviewed built-in assertion documentation does not establish a BackstopJS-style in-browser review interface; custom reporters or third-party integrations are a separate matter. |
| What should guide the choice? | Prefer it when the scenario, visual-report and approval workflow matches how your team reviews changes. | Prefer it when you want visual assertions alongside existing Playwright tests and their code. |
BackstopJS describes itself as automating visual regression testing by comparing screenshots over time. Playwright’s screenshot assertions are specifically part of its test runner, rather than a general standalone screenshot comparison command.
Set up a BackstopJS baseline and review changes
BackstopJS scenarios define what to capture. A scenario includes a label and URL and can target a local page or an absolute URL. Configure the required scenarios and viewports for your project, then use this documented cycle:
- Run
backstop initto initialize the project configuration. - Run
backstop testto capture the current pages and compare them with references. - Inspect the report’s reference, test and diff views. Decide whether each visual change is intentional.
- For approved changes, run
backstop approve. This promotes captures from the latest run to the reference collection.
Do not approve every difference simply to make a failing run pass. Treat the report as a review step: confirm the page state and the intended design change first.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add screenshot assertions to Playwright Test
Use toHaveScreenshot() in a Playwright Test test. On its initial execution, Playwright generates reference images; subsequent executions compare screenshots to those snapshots. Keep the snapshot files under source control so changes can be reviewed with the test that produced them.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});

npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Playwright documents screenshot assertions as limited to the Playwright test runner. If the project does not already use that runner, adopting this path means organizing visual checks there rather than treating the assertion as an independent image-review tool.
Make captures stable before tuning thresholds
A screenshot diff is useful only if the page and rendering environment are sufficiently repeatable. First control the source of variation; use tolerance settings only after that work.

Keep the rendering environment consistent
Playwright warns that output can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. Its documentation advises: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” Browser and platform differences can require separate snapshots. BackstopJS documents Docker rendering as a way to help maintain consistency across environments; its repository describes Chrome Headless rendering and Docker support, not guaranteed coverage across every browser.
Make page state deterministic
Dynamic data, animations, delayed widgets and changing content can create diffs unrelated to the intended UI change. Set up repeatable data and state before capturing. BackstopJS provides scenario readiness conditions, delays, hidden or removed selectors, and scripts to prepare or change page state. Playwright’s screenshot assertion offers controls including animation disabling, element masks, full-page capture, stylesheets and acceptable pixel differences.

Use tolerances carefully
A permissive pixel threshold may reduce noise, but it can also conceal a real change. Neither project documentation establishes one correct threshold for every interface. Decide which differences matter to your product, then validate that the chosen controls still surface them.

- Choose BackstopJS when you want URL-oriented scenarios, a purpose-built visual report and a distinct review-and-approve step.
- Choose Playwright when your browser tests already run in Playwright Test and keeping visual assertions next to those tests is more useful than a separate scenario workflow.
- For either tool, standardize the browser, operating system and page state used to create and check baselines.
- Check your project’s actual needs for interactions, viewports, masks, stylesheet overrides, reporting and environment coverage before migrating or setting thresholds.

If you need screenshots from URLs without maintaining a visual-regression test runner, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF. For a basic capture, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
