BackstopJS vs Percy for Visual Regression Testing

BackstopJS gives teams project-managed screenshot comparison and explicit baseline approval. Percy offers hosted snapshot comparison, managed browser rendering, and centralized review.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose BackstopJS if you want to run and maintain screenshot comparison in your own project; choose Percy if you want a hosted build, comparison, and review workflow with managed browser rendering. Neither is a universal winner. The right fit depends on how much control you need over the rendering environment, who will operate the workflow, and how your team reviews and approves visual changes.

BackstopJS and Percy at a glance

Question BackstopJS Percy
Where does the workflow run? BackstopJS documents local project configuration and execution, with optional Docker rendering. Your team owns its configuration and reference-image workflow. Snapshot assets are uploaded for Percy’s hosted processing, comparison, and review workflow.
How are visual changes reviewed? Run a test, inspect the report, then use backstop approve to promote reviewed captures into the reference set. A test run creates a hosted build containing snapshots. Percy presents comparisons for review and approval.
How is browser coverage handled? Its documentation describes Puppeteer and Playwright engine options, including Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit configuration. Percy can render selected browsers using its infrastructure. For specific OS/browser combinations, BrowserStack points teams to configuring BrowserStack Automate.
What CI support is documented? BackstopJS documents CLI and browser reports and JUnit output for CI. Percy creates builds from visual test runs and surfaces them for review. Check the current integration and blocking behavior for your repository and plan.
Who should consider it? Teams that want direct ownership of capture configuration, references, and execution. Teams that prefer hosted rendering and a managed build-and-approval workflow.

What each tool does

BackstopJS: project-managed screenshot comparison

BackstopJS compares newly captured screenshots with reference screenshots over time. Its documented command sequence is backstop init to configure scenarios and viewports, backstop test to capture and compare, and backstop approve to update references after review. You can inspect reports in a browser or through the CLI, and the project documents JUnit output for CI.

BackstopJS documents Puppeteer and Playwright engine options and optional Docker rendering. Those options provide ways to shape the capture environment, but the team still owns the project configuration and reference-image handling.

Percy: hosted builds, comparisons, and approvals

Percy’s workflow turns a visual test run into a build containing snapshots. Percy processes them, compares them with a baseline, and presents changes in a hosted review flow where a team can approve updates. Its documentation also describes branch/build approval behavior and history retention that depends on the plan.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

With Percy’s browser-rendering option, rendering infrastructure is managed by Percy. BrowserStack’s guidance distinguishes that managed browser selection from using BrowserStack Automate when a team needs specific desktop, mobile, browser, or operating-system combinations.

How to choose between them

1. Decide who will operate rendering

BackstopJS is the more direct fit when your team wants to run the workflow in its project environment and own its configuration and references. Docker is documented as an option to reduce environment differences. Percy is the clearer fit when you want snapshot processing, comparison, and review hosted as a service rather than operating that workflow yourself.

2. Match browser coverage to the question you need to answer

A visual diff is only as useful as the rendering conditions behind it. Browser and operating-system differences—including fonts, form controls, and scrollbars—can produce different screenshots. Percy’s managed browser option helps with selected-browser review; BrowserStack says teams needing specific OS/browser combinations can configure Automate. BackstopJS documents Puppeteer and Playwright options, including Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit configuration.

BrowserStack recommends Percy for testing on the newest browsers and Automate for a range of desktop, mobile, and browser combinations. These are vendor recommendations, not independent benchmark results. BrowserStack also recommends full-page screenshots for broader page coverage and the Recommended match level by default.

3. Compare baseline approval habits

BackstopJS makes reference promotion an explicit CLI action: inspect the new captures and approve them to establish the next reference set. Percy centers review on hosted builds and snapshots, and its approval workflow can connect approval status with source control. Choose the process that makes it easiest for your team to distinguish an intentional design change from an unwanted regression.

4. Check CI behavior before making it a gate

BackstopJS documents JUnit reporting, which can help expose results to CI systems. Percy’s documented flow creates builds for review, but whether a particular integration blocks a merge or reports status in the way you need depends on the repository integration and plan. Confirm those details for your setup rather than assuming every Percy workflow behaves identically.

5. Include usage accounting and history in the decision

BrowserStack says each selected browser rendering counts as a separate screenshot toward monthly Percy usage. Its visual-testing overview says free-plan builds expire after 30 days and other plans include one year of history. These are plan terms, not permanent product guarantees; verify current plan details before estimating usage or relying on historical comparisons.

6. Treat maintenance as a real adoption factor

The BackstopJS README says the project “needs a new maintainer/owner.” That is a current project-status signal worth including in an adoption review, especially if your team relies on ongoing maintenance. It does not, by itself, establish that BackstopJS is unusable or abandoned. Check the repository’s current releases and issue activity before drawing a stronger conclusion.

A practical decision rule

  • Lean toward BackstopJS if you want an explicitly project-managed workflow, configurable capture engines, and direct control over when reference screenshots change.
  • Lean toward Percy if hosted snapshot comparison, managed browser rendering, and centralized build review better match how your team works.
  • Pause before choosing if you need exact OS/browser combinations, strict merge-blocking behavior, a particular retention period, or predictable screenshot usage. Verify those requirements against the current configuration and plan.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits

If your immediate need is to capture website screenshots through an API rather than run a visual-regression baseline and approval workflow, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for BackstopJS or Percy’s baseline-comparison and visual-review workflows. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot options remove supported consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Only clean shots are billed, so bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

cURL example:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo’s free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
