Baby Bottle Drying Racks for New Parents: What to Look For and Whether You Need One

A baby bottle drying rack is optional. It can hold washed bottles and parts while they air-dry on the counter, but the CDC’s infant feeding guidance says a clean dish towel or paper towel is probably more hygienic than a rack. If you do use a rack, keep it for feeding items only, clean and sanitize it on a set schedule, and make sure it dries completely. No rack sterilizes bottles or makes them safer by itself, so the washing and drying routine matters more than the product you choose.

Do you need a drying rack at all?

Not necessarily. The CDC’s FAQ on cleaning infant feeding items addresses this directly, and its answer is the reason many parents skip the rack altogether:

The same guidance explains why. A rack can trap moisture, which allows mold and germs to grow, and racks are often harder to clean thoroughly than a surface you can wipe or replace. A folded clean towel or a sheet of paper towel gives you a fresh drying surface each time you use it.

Dr. Brown's Drying Tower, Stand-Up Drying Rack, Countertop Baby Bottle Drying with Organized Storage for Baby Essentials, Space Saving Vertical Rack, Black/White
  • VERTICAL DRYING TOWER. Compact countertop drying rack saves space while holding items upright to quickly dry baby bottles and parts
  • DRAIN, DRY AND STORE. Dry and store baby bottles, pacifiers, sippy cups and other baby accessories all in one place.
  • REMOVABLE DRIP TRAY. The removable bottom tray catches water while drying and is easy to empty and clean.
  • LARGE CAPACITY. With 6 pegs and 3 trays for drying and storing, the universal design fits most bottles, pacifiers, teethers, and other accessories.
  • TOP COMPARTMENT. Features an additional drying and storage top compartment for collars, lids, and nipples.

A rack still makes sense for some households. It keeps several bottles and parts off the counter, lets water drain away from the pieces, and can be easier than towel-drying when you wash bottles several times a day. If you choose one, treat it as a piece of equipment that needs its own cleaning routine, not as a finishing step.

How to air-dry bottles and parts

This is the routine the CDC describes for everyday cleaning. It applies whether or not you own a rack.

  1. Take every feeding item apart so that bottles, nipples, rings, caps, and valves are separate.
  2. Wash each piece, then rinse it.
  3. Place the parts on a clean, unused dish towel or paper towel in an area protected from dirt and dust.
  4. Let the parts air-dry completely. Do not rub or pat them dry with a dish towel, because that can reintroduce germs from the towel.
  5. Once every part is fully dry, reassemble the bottle with clean hands.
  6. Store the assembled bottle and parts in a clean, protected area until the next feeding.

If you use a drying rack

CDC guidance sets three rules for racks:

  • Use the rack only for infant feeding items. Do not dry dishes, produce, or other household items on it.
  • Wash, sanitize, and thoroughly dry the rack every few days.
  • Do this at least daily if the baby is under two months old, was born prematurely, or has a weakened immune system.

Routine cleaning means the rack is cleaned as often as the bottles are used. A rack that sits wet between uses defeats the purpose, so choose one you can take apart, reach into, and dry fully.

During emergencies

The CDC’s guidance on cleaning infant feeding items during emergencies describes a clean rack as one possible drying surface and recommends placing items upside down so they drain. Emergency conditions, such as limited water or no electricity, change what is practical, so use that guidance for those situations and the routine guidance above for everyday use.

What to compare when you shop

Racks differ in ways that affect daily use. Compare these before you buy:

  • Counter footprint. Measure the space you can spare beside the sink. Compact square designs take less room, but check that the bottles you own fit.
  • Capacity. Count how many bottles and sets you wash on a typical day, including the parts that need a separate slot. A rack that holds fewer items than your daily load means washing in batches or drying on a towel for the overflow.
  • Airflow and drainage. Open designs and a removable drip tray make it easier for water to run off and for the rack to dry.
  • Support for small parts. Nipples, rings, and valves are easy to lose or drop. Look for dedicated hooks, pegs, or a small-parts accessory.
  • Cleaning method. Confirm whether the rack and tray can be washed by hand, in a dishwasher, or both, and whether you can separate the pieces to reach every surface.

Example racks and what the manufacturer says

The three products below are examples of different design approaches. The details come from manufacturer pages, not from independent side-by-side testing, so they are not a ranking.

Use the table to check fit against your own routine. If you wash many small pump parts or nipples each day, a rack with dedicated small-part support, or a compatible accessory such as TWIG, may matter more than total bottle capacity.

Checking the care rules before you buy

Product care rules differ, and they can change between versions. Read the manual or product page for the exact model you plan to buy, and follow those rules rather than general advice. A rack that cannot go in the dishwasher still needs to be sanitized on the schedule the CDC recommends, so plan for hand cleaning.

Dishwasher baskets and drying racks

Some parents wonder whether they need both a dishwasher bottle basket and a countertop rack. The guidance reviewed for this article does not compare the two, so it cannot tell you which combination is best. What it does establish is that care rules are product-specific: a rack such as the Boon GRASS is not dishwasher-safe, so it cannot be cleaned by the dishwasher even if a basket can. If you use a dishwasher for bottles, check the manufacturer’s dishwasher instructions for each piece, and keep the rack cleaning routine separate.

Antimicrobial claims

Boon markets its current GRASS tray as antimicrobial and says it has been tested against listed fungi. That is a manufacturer claim about a specific material test. It does not show that the rack prevents infant illness, that it replaces washing and sanitizing, or that it dries bottles better than a clean towel. Treat the claim as a feature of the material, not a health benefit.

What the evidence does and does not establish

  • The CDC’s guidance is the main public-health source on drying infant feeding items. Its FAQ carries a publication date of April 16, 2024, and the main cleaning guidance was reviewed in October 2026.
  • No population-level statistics about drying-rack use, infant illness, or comparative rack performance were found in the sources reviewed.
  • No independent test ranks drying racks against one another, so no single rack can be named the best.
  • Product details come from the manufacturers named above and can change with new models or packaging. Confirm specifications and availability before you buy.

The practical takeaway is simple: clean every part, let it dry fully on a clean surface, and choose a rack only if it fits your counter, your daily volume, and your cleaning routine.
