Babbel is a more human-designed way to learn Spanish than a generic chatbot, but it is not human teaching. Its courses are written by language experts, yet its current consumer speaking features are speech recognition, scripted dialogues and an AI conversation partner. Babbel Live, its teacher-led class product for individual learners, closed to new bookings after June 30, 2025.
So the useful question is not “bot or human?” It is which parts of your Spanish practice need a person, and which a well-built app can cover.

Where the human element in Babbel actually sits
Babbel says its method and learning material are designed by language-learning experts. Lessons run about six minutes, mistakes are reviewed, and pronunciation is practiced with speech recognition. That is human input into a digital product. It is not a person who listens to you, notices your habits and adapts on the spot.

Franz Ardito, Babbel’s Principal Product Manager, said in the September 16, 2025 launch release: “We achieved this in close collaboration between our language experts and AI teams, with pedagogy defining how learners progress through the scenarios while AI handles the natural conversational flow and personalised responses.” Experts set the path and AI runs the conversation.

The four speaking modes, compared
| Feature | Who or what responds | Spontaneous? | Spanish availability and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pronunciation exercises | Speech recognition scores how closely you match a prompted word or phrase | No, you repeat a prompt | Needs microphone permission. Not available in every exercise. Babbel recommends a quiet room and stable internet. |
| Guided Conversations | Scripted audio; you speak an assigned part | No, it is scripted | Mexican and European Spanish, A1/A2 levels only. Mobile only, not desktop. |
| Babbel Speak | AI conversation partner, with feedback after the conversation | Within a scenario and task | Beta, on mobile. Availability varies with your display language. Babbel’s help page lists Spanish practice for British English display and Mexican Spanish for American English display. Check in the app, as this can change. |
| Babbel Live | Human teachers in classes | Yes | Closed to individual learners after June 30, 2025. |
What Babbel Speak does
Babbel Speak puts you in scenarios with tasks. If you get stuck, you can ask for hints, translations, a repetition or a slower reply. After the conversation you get feedback. It is useful for rehearsing, but it is still AI, which is exactly what the title warns about. Babbel’s CEO Tim Allen framed the goal modestly in the launch release: “We don’t promise to take learners from zero to fluent overnight – we guide them from first words to confident conversations”.
What happened to live classes
Individual learners could no longer book Babbel Live classes after June 30, 2025. Babbel said class history and materials stayed accessible through August 31, 2025. Its help page separates this consumer closure from the business offer, so a company-run program is a different question. Treat any page that still promotes live classes to individuals with caution.

Course scope
Babbel lists both Spanish from Spain and Latin American Spanish, and says Spanish courses go up to C1, depending on your language combination. The first lesson of each course is free to try. Check current subscription pricing and terms on Babbel’s site, since they change.

Babbel publishes positive Spanish study results. These summaries are hosted by the company and describe specific participants, measures and durations. They do not guarantee your outcome, and they do not test AI against human tutors.

- Engaging Spanish vocabulary builder for kids. Perfect for both classroom and homeschool curriculum, the activities in this workbook cover essential Spanish for kids including common phrases, questions, vocabulary, parts of speech, and more.
- Helping your child along the way. An answer key is included in the back of each Spanish Workbook to track your child’s progress. A review is included in the level 2 Spanish textbook.
- Practically sized for every activity. Both 80-page Spanish workbook for kids are sized at about 6” x 9”—giving your child plenty of space to complete each exercise.
- For more than 45 years, Carson Dellosa has provided solutions for parents and teachers to help their children get ahead and exceed learning goals. Carson Dellosa supports your child’s educational journey every step of the way.
- Michigan State University (announced January 10, 2019): after roughly 12 weeks, nearly all participants who completed the study made statistically significant gains in oral proficiency, grammar and/or vocabulary. Lead investigator Dr. Shawn Loewen said learners increased oral proficiency “as measured by an improvement on a well-established and valid speaking test, the Oral Proficiency Interview.”
- Yale Center for Language Study: Babbel’s summary reports 117 US beginners, all of whom improved oral Spanish proficiency over three months, from beginner to intermediate levels.
- MSU, 54 students: after 10 hours, 96% scored higher on grammar and vocabulary tests and 73% improved oral proficiency. Gains were associated with time spent on Babbel.
- City University of New York: about 15 hours on average over two months reached an outcome Babbel describes as equivalent to one college semester of Spanish.
- Time to ACTFL novice-high oral level: Babbel reports averages of 46 hours (Yale) and 12 hours (MSU).
Do not compare the hour figures head to head. The studies had different participants, designs and contexts. They also predate Babbel Speak, so they say nothing about whether its AI conversations caused gains. I found no independent statistic comparing human tutors with AI practice, so none is cited here.
A practical routine: app for structure, people for surprise
The main thing an app cannot do is answer a question it did not expect. Scripts and AI scenarios stay inside planned territory. A person can interrupt, misunderstand you, use slang and ask something off topic. A sensible split:

- Use the lessons for vocabulary, grammar and review. Short sessions suit daily habits.
- Use pronunciation exercises and Guided Conversations if you are at A1/A2 and want to say complete sentences aloud, Mexican or European Spanish.
- Use Babbel Speak as rehearsal, not as a verdict on how you sound with real speakers. Check it is offered for your display language.
- Add real conversation outside the app, with a Spanish-speaking friend, exchange partner or paid teacher. Babbel itself encourages practice outside the app. I have not verified a specific tutoring service, so choose one yourself.
- Match your Spanish variety. Pick Latin American or Spain Spanish and, for Guided Conversations, Mexican or European, so your practice partners and lessons agree.
Who Babbel suits
- Good fit: beginners to intermediate learners who want a curated path, short daily sessions and low-stakes speaking rehearsal.
- Weaker fit: anyone who specifically wants a human teacher inside the same product, or spontaneous conversation with correction and explanation. Babbel’s consumer app no longer provides that.
The Bottom Line
Babbel gives you human-designed structure, not a human teacher. Take it for the curriculum, treat its speaking tools as rehearsal, and book real conversations with a person elsewhere.
