Baba Is You has no conventional cheat-code system. Its “cheats” are the rules already lying on the screen: movable word blocks that determine what every object is, can do, or can touch. Move one block and you can turn the player into a rock, make grass lethal, remove a barrier, or redefine the goal. The safest way to get unstuck is to inspect the current sentence, test one rule change at a time, and use a hint before opening a complete walkthrough.
This guide explains that method, shows how to choose spoiler levels, and points to the places where players can find level-specific help. It does not present unverified button sequences as guaranteed solutions; individual puzzles can have several valid routes, and community guide contents change.

What “cheats” mean in Baba Is You
A normal cheat might be a password, an invincibility toggle, or a modified save file. Baba Is You is different. The puzzle’s rules are physical objects, written as word tiles. You push those tiles around just as you push the character or other objects. A sentence such as BABA IS YOU establishes the character you control. FLAG IS WIN defines the usual objective. WALL IS STOP makes walls block movement.

That is why an apparently sealed room may be solvable without a key: the “wall” may stop being STOP, the player may become a different object, or the goal may be moved or renamed. Nintendo describes the game as a puzzle game where you can change the rules by which you play, with examples including turning the player into a rock, making grass dangerously hot, and changing the goal.

Read the board as a set of editable sentences
1. Find every word block
Before moving anything, scan the entire room, including corners and areas that look decorative. Identify nouns such as BABA, FLAG, ROCK, WALL and GRASS; properties such as YOU, STOP, PUSH, WIN, HOT, DEFEAT and FLOAT; and connector words such as IS. A rule can be active even when its words are far from the object it describes, provided the words form a straight, readable line.
Write the active rules mentally, then ask which word is doing the most work. If BABA IS YOU is the only YOU rule, breaking it may leave you unable to control anything. If two objects have YOU, you may control both at once. If two rules give an object contradictory properties, the board’s exact arrangement and the game’s rule handling determine the result, so test rather than assume.
2. Separate identity from property
Noun-to-noun rules can change what an object is. A rule that makes BABA ROCK turns the controlled character into a rock; the old BABA rule may stop applying because there is no longer a BABA object under your control. Property rules change behavior without changing the noun: ROCK IS PUSH, WALL IS STOP, or GRASS IS HOT. Treat these as different levers. First ask whether you need a new object identity, then ask which properties that object needs.

3. Look for rule-breaking moves
Most solutions begin by breaking an existing sentence safely. Push one word away, walk around the board, and observe what changed. A wall that was STOP may become passable if STOP is displaced. A word that was PUSH may become fixed scenery if the sentence no longer exists. Sometimes the correct move is to preserve a rule and move an object through it; sometimes the correct move is to dismantle it temporarily and rebuild it later.

4. Treat the goal as editable
Players often assume the flag must be reached exactly as displayed. In this game, the win condition can be changed. If the board contains a WIN word, look for ways to attach it to another noun or to move the noun itself. This is not a universal shortcut: the new rule must be assembled legally, and you still need a controllable object that can reach the resulting target.
A safe experiment loop when you are stuck
- Freeze the current state. Do not push a word immediately. Identify every active YOU, STOP, PUSH, WIN, DEFEAT, HOT and similar rule you can see.
- Choose one hypothesis. For example: “If I move IS, the wall will stop blocking me,” or “If I connect ROCK to YOU, I can use the narrow passage.” Avoid making several changes at once; you will not know which one mattered.
- Make the smallest push. Move the word or object one square, then check the board again. Watch for a property disappearing as well as one appearing.
- Test the consequence. Try the newly opened route, touch the suspected hazard only if you can undo it, and verify whether the win condition changed.
- Undo immediately after a failed test. The guide hub babaisyou.net lists X/Z for undo and R for restarting on its keyboard-controls page. Those are keyboard controls reported by that third-party site, not universal controls for every platform or controller layout. On Switch, use the controls shown in the game’s own interface.
- Restart when the board is structurally dead. If you have destroyed the only YOU rule, trapped every necessary word, or made a required object permanently DEFEAT, a restart is usually faster than trying to recover.
Choose the right amount of help
There are two useful forms of level assistance. Steam’s community listings include both hint-oriented guides and step-by-step written walkthroughs. They serve different goals, so choose before opening a guide.

Guide quality is not guaranteed by its presence in a community list. Ratings, coverage and instructions can change, and a solution written for one revision or route may not match your current board state. Use a walkthrough as a reference, not as proof that your own puzzle state is identical.
Hint-first method: three spoiler levels
Level 1: observation
Ask a question that does not reveal a move: Which sentence contains the only YOU? Which word is preventing a passage from opening? Is the apparent target actually the only possible WIN object? Look for a word that can be pushed from the side rather than from the direction you first tried.

Level 2: stronger nudge
Identify the rule family involved. If the obstacle is a wall, examine WALL IS STOP and any nearby alternatives to STOP. If the route is too narrow, inspect whether the player can become another noun or whether a FLOAT rule changes crossing behavior. If you die on contact, search for DEFEAT or HOT and consider whether the hazard can be reclassified instead of avoided.
Level 3: solution outline
Describe the intended transformation without listing every keystroke: “Break the wall’s STOP rule, move the IS tile around the corner, rebuild a YOU rule, then attach WIN to the object you can reach.” This gives a logical destination while leaving the final positioning to you. Only after that should you open a full sequence.
How to use a full walkthrough without losing your place
- Restart the level so your board matches the guide’s starting state.
- Read only the first operation or short group of operations, then pause.
- Confirm that the stated rule appears on your screen before copying the next move.
- If your board diverges, undo to the last matching position instead of continuing blindly.
- After the win, replay the puzzle once without the guide. Reconstructing why the rule change worked is more useful than memorizing a route.
One Steam community guide advertises step-by-step written solutions for “all 231 levels.” That number is the guide author’s own scope claim, not an independently verified official level count, and the listing does not establish the author or a fixed date. Treat it as a description of that guide’s coverage rather than a game statistic.

Hidden content is usually discovered through exploration of the overworld and by noticing that the map itself can use the same rule logic as a puzzle. Do not assume that every locked-looking space is opened by a secret code. Check whether a route becomes accessible after completing a nearby level, whether a map object can be moved, and whether a new path appears after a rule change. Keep a note of unexplored branches so you can return without replaying the entire map.

The third-party site babaisyou.net advertises guidance for regular levels, hidden levels and difficult levels. No official developer affiliation was established for that site, so use it as an independent reference. Its keyboard-control notes are similarly platform-specific. Steam’s community area is another place to ask for a hint on one named level; describe the rules currently visible on your board and the point at which your attempt fails, rather than requesting an unexplained cheat code.

You broke the only YOU rule
When the controlled character changes identity or the YOU word is pushed out of alignment, input may appear to stop working. Undo before experimenting further. If no controllable object remains, restart and preserve one YOU rule while testing the alternative.
You created a rule but cannot reach the object
A valid sentence is not automatically useful. Check whether the new property creates a STOP, DEFEAT or collision problem elsewhere. You may need to build the rule in a temporary location, use it once, then dismantle it to restore the route.

You moved a pivotal word into a corner
Words are often harder to recover than ordinary objects. Before pushing a connector such as IS, trace the squares from which you will need to approach it later. If it is trapped, restart rather than wasting moves trying to force an impossible angle.

You copied a guide but reached a different state
Walkthroughs assume an exact starting arrangement. A single extra push can shift a word, alter which rule is active, or change the order in which objects collide. Undo to the last matching position, or restart and follow the guide in shorter increments.
You are treating a hazard as permanent
HOT and DEFEAT are rules, not immutable features of the artwork. Look for the word that assigns the hazard and test whether it can be displaced, reassigned or used on another noun. Do this only when you can retain a safe YOU rule; otherwise the experiment may strand you.
Platform and version details
Nintendo’s UK Switch listing gives Baba Is You a release date of 13 March 2019. It describes the game as single-player and lists handheld, tabletop and TV play modes, along with multiple supported languages. Storefront availability and language lists can vary by country, so check the listing for your own Nintendo account before relying on a regional detail.
Nintendo Canada marks the game as “Supported” on Nintendo Switch 2 and says game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch. That is a compatibility statement, not a promise of new Switch 2 features. Steam’s support listing identifies Hempuli Oy as developer and publisher and lists single-player play, Steam achievements, Steam Cloud, Remote Play and Family Sharing. Steam labels and community content can change, so verify the features shown on the platform you intend to use.
Merchandise is not a solving tool
Fangamer lists an official Baba plush measuring 6.7 inches and recommends it for ages 12 and up. The product page noted a July 2025 production change to the coat and showed the plush out of stock when checked. It is a collectible, not an accessory that unlocks levels or provides hints. Stock and product details are time-sensitive; do not infer current availability from an older listing.
A practical checklist for any unsolved level
- Have you listed every visible noun, property and connector?
- Which rule currently creates YOU, STOP, PUSH, WIN, DEFEAT or HOT?
- Can one word be moved without destroying your only controllable object?
- Could the player, obstacle or goal be redefined instead of physically moved?
- What changes after one push, and can you undo it?
- Would an observation, a stronger nudge or a complete sequence fit your spoiler preference?
- If using a community guide, does your board still match its stated starting position?
That checklist turns “I need a cheat” into a controlled experiment. In Baba Is You, the decisive advantage is not a hidden password; it is recognizing which sentence can be rewritten while keeping a path to the win condition.
