Yes—an Azure billing or credit issue can stop a YouTube stream hosted on an Azure VM. If the subscription becomes disabled, Azure can deallocate the VM, so its streaming process cannot keep running. Check the subscription and VM in the Azure portal first; if both are active, diagnose the operating system, streaming software, network, and YouTube separately. The timing alone does not prove credit expiry caused the interruption.
Check whether Azure disabled the subscription
In the Azure portal, open Subscriptions and check the status of the subscription that contains the VM. Also review billing notifications and the account’s billing page. Microsoft lists expired credit, a reached spending limit, an overdue bill, and a payment-card limit or disablement among possible reasons for a subscription to show as Disabled. A disabled subscription cannot create or manage resources; VM resources are deallocated, temporary IP addresses are freed, and storage becomes read-only. Microsoft’s subscription-state guidance describes these effects.

If the subscription is Disabled, establish the billing cause before attempting to troubleshoot the stream. A VM that has been deallocated cannot run its streaming software, regardless of whether that software was configured correctly.
Distinguish credit expiry from reaching a spending limit
These are related but different billing cases. An expired credit may leave a balance to pay or may disable a subscription, depending on the offer and account state. A spending limit, by contrast, can stop deployed services for the rest of the billing period when usage reaches the limit. Microsoft’s example specifically says VMs are stopped and deallocated in that situation. Some subscriptions with credits that span multiple months can be re-enabled at the start of the next billing period. Azure’s spending-limit guidance explains the timing and offer-dependent behavior.

- Check the subscription’s current status rather than inferring the cause from when the stream stopped.
- Check the credit balance and expiry date, and note the billing-period date if the account has a spending limit.
- Confirm the subscription offer and billing type; credit and reactivation rules are not universal across Azure offers.
Find the credit balance and expiry date
For a subscription billed under a Microsoft Customer Agreement, the documented path is Billing > Payment methods > Azure credits. The page shows available credit and expiry dates. Microsoft defines the available balance as the amount after the last invoice; if it reaches zero, eligible usage is charged to the billing account’s payment method. Confirm that your account uses Microsoft Customer Agreement billing before relying on this exact navigation. Microsoft’s Azure-credit balance instructions cover that billing type.
For a free Azure account, Microsoft describes an offer for eligible new users of $200 in the account’s billing currency for the first 30 days. Under that offer, the subscription and services are disabled when the credit runs out or expires at the end of the period. These terms apply to that free-account offer, not automatically to other prepaid-credit programs. Check the terms attached to your own offer. Resolve billing or cancellation issues before restarting
Follow the recovery route that matches the portal’s status and the account’s billing information. If the subscription remains disabled after you update payment information, Microsoft notes that an outstanding balance may still be preventing reactivation. Azure does not accept virtual or prepaid credit cards as subscription payment methods. If you deliberately canceled the subscription, the service is disabled and resources are deallocated; whether and how it can be reactivated depends on subscription type and timing. Confirm the VM starts, then use its actual error
After the subscription is active, check the VM’s power state in the portal and try to start it if needed. If it will not start, inspect the VM’s Activity log and the relevant deployment or operation details for the recorded error. Allocation failure is one documented reason a VM may fail to restart or resize; the error shown for your VM should guide the next step rather than a guessed fix. If the subscription is active and the VM is running, Azure billing status alone does not identify why the YouTube stream stopped. Check the guest operating system and streaming application, then verify outbound network connectivity and the stream’s status in YouTube Studio. Look for application logs, a stopped or crashed process, configuration changes, connectivity failures, and any YouTube-side notification. The cause depends on the VM operating system, software, network path, and YouTube setup; do not treat credit expiry as proof of a streaming-key, bitrate, or copyright problem.
