Azure Files standard HDD large file shares can use geo-redundant storage (GRS) or geo-zone-redundant storage (GZRS). Premium SSD shares cannot use either option. Neither configuration provides read access to the secondary region before failover, and asynchronous replication means recent writes may not have reached that region when a disaster occurs.
Can Azure Files standard large file shares use geo-redundancy?
Yes, if the share uses standard HDD storage. Microsoft’s Azure Files redundancy documentation says geo-redundancy (GRS or GZRS) is supported only for HDD file shares. Premium SSD shares must use locally redundant storage (LRS) or zone-redundant storage (ZRS).

The redundancy setting applies to the storage account, not to an individual share. Every share in an account uses the same setting, so workloads that need different redundancy choices may need separate storage accounts. Azure Files does not support read-access GRS or GZRS (RA-GRS or RA-GZRS). If an account is configured with one of those account SKUs, its file shares are treated and billed as GRS or GZRS; that does not make the secondary readable.

| Option | Primary-region protection | Secondary-region protection | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| GRS | LRS: copies are maintained within the primary region. | Data is asynchronously copied to the paired secondary region using LRS. | Does not add availability-zone replication in the primary region. |
| GZRS | ZRS: data is replicated across availability zones in the primary region. | Data is asynchronously copied to the paired secondary region. | Requires a region with availability zones and a paired region. |
Both options are designed to protect against a regional disaster through a copy in a paired region. GZRS adds protection against a failure affecting an availability zone in the primary region before data is asynchronously replicated to the secondary. Microsoft describes GRS and GZRS as providing at least 99.99999999999999% annual durability; that durability figure does not promise that the latest writes will be present after a regional failure. See Microsoft’s redundancy documentation for the current descriptions.

Check region eligibility before choosing GZRS
The secondary region is the paired region selected for the primary; you cannot choose a different secondary. GZRS is available only when the primary region supports availability zones and has a paired region. Confirm that the intended region and redundancy option are currently supported in Microsoft’s region and redundancy guidance and in your account configuration. Support can change.
Can I read Azure Files from the secondary region?
No. With Azure Files GRS or GZRS, the secondary copy is unavailable for reads until a failover makes that region primary. These configurations are not a way to serve read traffic from a warm secondary while the primary is healthy. Microsoft’s Azure Files redundancy documentation distinguishes these options from read-access redundancy supported by some other Azure storage services.

How much data could be missing after an Azure Files failover?
Potentially, writes made after the latest data replicated to the secondary. Replication is asynchronous, not synchronous, so geo-redundancy does not guarantee zero data loss. Microsoft’s Azure Files reliability guidance estimates replication lag at less than 15 minutes but explicitly says the estimate is not guaranteed.

Azure Files creates a system snapshot every 15 minutes for geo-redundant shares. After failover, the share reflects the latest snapshot available in the secondary region, which can be older than 15 minutes. The snapshot interval and the estimated replication lag are separate facts; neither is a guaranteed recovery point or service-level commitment.

Use Last Sync Time as an estimate, not a guarantee
The account’s Last Sync Time property reflects the latest system snapshot in the secondary and is based on whichever storage service in the account is furthest behind. It is not updated when no changes have occurred. Use it as an operational signal when estimating potential data loss, not as proof that every recent write has replicated. Microsoft explains this behavior in its redundancy guidance.
What happens to shares and clients during regional failover?
During failover, data is inaccessible. When failover completes, the former secondary becomes the primary and reads and writes resume there. File handles and leases are not retained, so clients must unmount and remount the share. Applications should be designed to reconnect and recover rather than assume open handles will survive. Microsoft’s failover documentation describes these effects.

Plan for more than the region switch itself: a failover can change the effective share quota to the quota configured when the system snapshot was taken; ongoing copy operations are aborted and should be retried; and directory queries may have higher latency while synchronization completes. Include these behaviors in recovery procedures and validate application handling before an incident.
What account limits can affect failover and monitoring?
- More than 100,000 shares: failover is blocked unless Microsoft Support assists.
- More than 100 shares: calculation of Last Sync Time can time out. Microsoft recommends fewer than 100 shares per account to avoid this issue.
- No system snapshot in the secondary: failover can be blocked.
These constraints are documented in Microsoft’s Azure Files redundancy guidance. Because redundancy is configured at account level, account design affects both the recovery choice and these operational limits.

How to choose a redundancy setting
- Choose GRS when regional disaster protection is needed and primary-region availability-zone replication is not a requirement.
- Consider GZRS when the workload needs both availability-zone resilience in the primary region and asynchronous protection in its paired region, and the region supports GZRS.
- Use neither as a substitute for a readable standby. Azure Files does not expose the secondary for reads before failover.
- Set recovery expectations around asynchronous replication. Account for possible data loss after an unplanned regional failover, a period of inaccessibility, client remounts, and post-failover recovery tasks.
- Separate workloads by account when necessary. Shares in the same account cannot have different redundancy settings.
For implementation, verify the current regional support and account configuration, identify the acceptable recovery point and recovery time, and test the client remount and application retry process. Microsoft’s redundancy documentation, reliability guidance, and data protection overview describe the relevant service behavior.
