Radio automation and YouTube delivery are separate jobs. Automation selects and plays audio; YouTube Live expects an encoder to send a video-and-audio feed to its live server using your stream key. A radio station that produces continuous audio is therefore not, by that fact alone, a complete YouTube Live channel.

RadioDJ is Windows radio automation software. Its official site says newer versions use an external encoder; it notes that version 1.8.2 had an integrated Icecast/Shoutcast encoder through plugins. The reviewed official information does not establish a current, supported RadioDJ-to-YouTube configuration.

Which one should you choose?
Choose AzuraCast when the station itself should run on a server
AzuraCast is the better-documented fit if you want a server installation to manage continuous audio playback, playlists and scheduling. Uploads do not automatically enter AutoDJ rotation: assign each file to at least one playlist. Advanced users can also write custom Liquidsoap rules. The server and its network still need to remain operational; the documented 24/7 design is not a guarantee that a particular host or installation will never fail.

Choose RadioDJ when you want Windows-based radio automation
RadioDJ may suit a workflow centered on a Windows 10 or 11 machine and its listed audio formats. For a YouTube channel, however, treat encoder integration as an unresolved setup requirement rather than assuming RadioDJ sends a complete YouTube-ready video stream. The reviewed official page does not provide enough current detail to prescribe a reliable RadioDJ-to-YouTube recipe.

How to build the YouTube workflow
Use either radio system as the automation layer only after deciding how the YouTube encoder will receive both audio and video. YouTube’s encoder setup requires the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio; use its current settings table for the bitrate appropriate to your codec, resolution and frame rate.
- Choose where automation runs. For AzuraCast, plan a server installation and its ongoing operation. For RadioDJ, plan a Windows 10 or 11 machine and confirm the current version’s external-encoder handoff with its official documentation.
- Prepare playback. In AzuraCast, upload audio and assign each file to at least one playlist; configure rotation or schedules as needed. In RadioDJ, build the rotation in the application, then verify how its audio reaches the chosen encoder.
- Provide the video component. A music-only audio feed is not a video stream. Configure an encoder or other supported arrangement to combine the station audio with a compatible video signal. The cited RadioDJ materials do not establish which current external encoder configuration is supported, so confirm this before committing to it.
- Set up YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream, then enter the displayed server URL and stream key in the encoder. Enable live streaming in advance if necessary: YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. Keep the stream key private.
- Match encoder settings to YouTube’s current table. Select a supported codec and resolution, use constant bitrate (CBR), and set keyframes every 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. - Test and monitor the complete chain. Confirm that audio is audible, video is present, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream. Monitor the encoder, the machine or server, and the network; YouTube advises checking stream quality and the local archive during operation.
- Plan for recovery and replay separately. Decide who will restart a failed station or encoder and keep a local recording if preserving the broadcast matters. Continuous operation, copyright and common failure points
Keeping the channel live is not the same as preserving a replay
Automation may keep audio playing while an encoder, host or network interruption still breaks the YouTube feed. Monitor the whole path, not only the playlist. If an archived replay is important, use session boundaries under 12 hours or retain a local recording; YouTube warns that a longer stream may not be captured at all.
Confirm rights before broadcasting music
Having an audio file does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast it on YouTube. Copyright and licensing depend on the catalog and territory. Confirm the applicable permissions before scheduling music, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules rather than assuming automation changes them.
Symptoms and fixes
- AutoDJ is silent or skips a file: In AzuraCast, check that the uploaded file is assigned to at least one playlist and that the playlist is configured for the intended rotation or schedule.
- YouTube receives no signal: Confirm the encoder is running, its server URL and stream key are correct, and the audio/video source reaches it. A radio automation program alone may not supply the video component.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the encoder’s selected codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, resolution and bitrate against YouTube’s current settings guidance. Inspect the network and monitor the local recording as well.
- Replay is missing after a long broadcast: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be archived. Preserve a local recording or split the broadcast into shorter sessions if replay access matters.
- First live session cannot start: Allow for YouTube’s stated first-time enablement period of up to 24 hours and configure the stream before the planned start.
