The safest fix for an “az.dll is missing” or “az.dll was not found” message is to repair or reinstall the application that requested it. az.dll is not one uniquely identifiable Windows system file. Different programs can ship a file with that name, so downloading an arbitrary copy and placing it in System32 can install the wrong version, architecture, or dependencies.
First identify the failing executable and its publisher, then restore the program from its own repair option or official installer. Only investigate Windows-wide corruption when several unrelated applications fail.

What the az.dll error actually means
A dynamic-link library (DLL) is a module containing functions and data that another program can use. Windows loads a program and its DLL dependencies through defined search and linking rules. The loader checks the executable’s folder before looking in other locations. If a required module cannot be resolved, Windows stops the launch and displays a message such as:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because az.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because az.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “az.dll is missing.”
The filename does not tell you which product owns it. A project repository for Half-Life: Absolute Zero, for example, builds an az.dll in that game’s dlls directory, and SteamDB recorded AbsoluteZero/dlls/az.dll in the game’s Windows depot. SteamDB listed that particular file at 3.36 MiB in 2023. That evidence shows that at least one third-party application uses the name; it does not make az.dll a standard Windows component.

Windows can report the same message when a DLL was deleted, quarantined, overwritten, damaged, built for the wrong processor architecture, or present but unable to load one of its own dependencies. A file can therefore exist on disk and still produce a “not found” style failure.
Before changing anything: capture the context
Write down the details while the message is visible. They determine which repair path is appropriate and prevent you from replacing a file blindly.
- Exact wording: record whether the dialog says “missing,” “not found,” “entry point not found,” or names another module as well.
- Failing executable: note the program or game that will not start, including its launcher if one is shown.
- Publisher and version: check the program’s About screen, installer, or the executable’s Properties dialog.
- Install directory: note the folder containing the executable. The expected private DLL is often beside that executable rather than in a Windows system folder.
- Recent event: record whether the problem began after an update, an interrupted installation, an uninstall, an antivirus quarantine, a disk cleanup, or moving the program to another drive.
- Scope: test one other unrelated program. One failing application points toward that application; several unrelated failures justify checking Windows or storage health.
Use the owning application’s repair option first
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected application, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options when that entry is available.
- Select Repair, wait for Windows to finish, and launch the application again.
- If Repair does not exist or does not help, use the application’s own launcher or installer to run its repair function.
Repair normally preserves the application’s settings and user data, but the exact behavior is controlled by the publisher. If the program has no Advanced options entry, use its launcher or the publisher’s installer instead of trying to supply a DLL manually.
Windows 10
- Open Settings and choose Apps.
- Stay on Apps & features, select the affected program, and open Advanced options if Windows offers it.
- Choose Repair, then retry the program.
- For software without a Repair button, open its official installer or launcher and select its repair or verify option.
For a game, use the game platform’s “verify” or “repair” function when supplied by that platform. The objective is to restore the exact files and dependency versions that belong to that game, not merely to obtain a file with the same basename.

Cleanly reinstall the affected program
If repair cannot restore the launch, a clean reinstall is the next supported step. Reinstalling from the publisher is more reliable than copying a downloaded DLL because the installer can restore the executable, private DLLs, configuration, and dependent runtimes as a matching set.
- Back up save files, profiles, templates, or other data that the application stores outside its installation folder.
- Record any license or sign-in information needed to activate the application again.
- Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps (Windows 11: Installed apps; Windows 10: Apps & features) or with the publisher’s uninstaller.
- Restart Windows. This clears files that an interrupted update may still have locked.
- Download the installer from the application publisher or the official distribution platform. Match the edition and processor architecture required by the program.
- Install to the intended folder, allow the installer to complete, and apply the program’s current updates.
- Launch the application before restoring optional mods or plug-ins. If it starts cleanly, add those components one at a time to identify a conflicting add-on.
If the error appeared immediately after an update, reinstalling the current package or using the publisher’s rollback or verify feature is preferable to retrieving an older az.dll from an unrelated site.
Why downloading az.dll from a random site is unsafe
There is no universal “official az.dll” that fits every program. A download page may not identify the original publisher, build number, compiler runtime, processor architecture, or the other DLLs that the file expects. Even if the filename matches, Windows may reject it because its exported functions differ from what the application was built to call.

Replacing a private application file can also create a version conflict: the program may start and then fail later, crash only on certain features, or load a tampered module. Placing an arbitrary file in C:WindowsSystem32 or another system directory is especially risky because unrelated programs could load it. Do not disable security software merely to force a DLL into place. If a security product quarantined the file, review its detection and obtain a clean package from the application publisher instead.

Check architecture, version, and location
Confirm that the file belongs beside the requesting executable
Open the folder containing the failing executable and look for the program’s own az.dll. Do not copy a file from another application, another computer, or a system directory. If the file is absent, the application’s repair or reinstall process is the appropriate way to restore it.
Match 32-bit and 64-bit components
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application can require different builds of a library with the same name. Use the architecture stated by the publisher or installer. Installing a 64-bit DLL for a 32-bit executable, or the reverse, can produce a load failure even when the filename is correct.
Check the file’s version information
In File Explorer, right-click a DLL supplied with the application, choose Properties, and inspect the Details tab for publisher and product information. A missing publisher, an unexpected product name, or a version unrelated to the installed application is a reason to remove the file through the application’s repair or reinstall process rather than keep experimenting with replacements.
When the problem is a dependency, not az.dll itself
Windows can show a message naming az.dll when that module exists but cannot load one of its dependencies. The dependency chain may include a runtime library, another private DLL, or a component of the application that was overwritten during an update.

Use a dependency inspection tool on the failing executable and its private DLLs to identify missing or invalid modules. Microsoft documents Dependency Walker for this type of diagnosis and describes private DLL isolation and search-order behavior. Compare the reported architecture and module paths with the application’s installation package. Do not “fix” every warning by downloading files individually; restore the complete application package when the chain is inconsistent.

If only one application reports az.dll, stay with that application’s publisher-supported repair path. If several unrelated applications begin failing, the common cause may be broader Windows, storage, or update corruption.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart. An interrupted update can leave multiple programs with unresolved components.
- Use Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting and update support paths for system-wide symptoms. Microsoft advises users who need support for a Microsoft product, including Windows, to use Microsoft Support.
- Check whether the failures began after a disk error, an abrupt power loss, or a system restore. Preserve important files before attempting larger repairs.
- Contact the application publisher when only its product fails, and Microsoft when Windows components or several unrelated programs fail.
A system-wide diagnosis should not be used as a reason to overwrite a private DLL. The scope of the failure is the deciding clue: one program suggests an application package; many programs suggest a Windows or storage issue.

Common situations and the right response
The error appeared after an application update
Close the application and its launcher, restart Windows, and run the publisher’s repair or verify function. If that fails, reinstall the current version from the official channel. An interrupted update can leave a missing or mixed-version dependency set.
The error appeared after antivirus action
Review the security product’s quarantine history. Do not restore a file solely because its name is az.dll; confirm that it belongs to the affected application and obtain a clean copy through that application’s repair or reinstall process.
The program was moved to another drive
Use the application’s official move or reinstall procedure. Manually moving only the executable or DLLs can break relative paths and private dependency search rules.
Only a modded game installation fails
Launch the unmodified installation after using the platform’s verify or repair function. If the clean version works, reintroduce mods or plug-ins individually and keep the versions that the game publisher or mod author lists as compatible.

The message names another DLL as well
Treat the additional filename as a dependency clue. Record every named module and use a dependency inspection tool or the publisher’s support channel rather than replacing files one at a time.
What not to do
- Do not assume that every
az.dllbelongs to Windows. - Do not copy a file from another PC, game, or application because the basename matches.
- Do not place an unverified DLL in
System32or alter the Windows search path to make an application launch. - Do not disable security protections to install an unknown file.
- Do not keep retrying a failing replacement when the application’s own installer can restore the complete dependency set.
When to contact support
Contact the application publisher with the exact error text, executable name, product version, Windows edition, installation path, recent update history, and any dependency-inspection results. This information lets the publisher distinguish a missing private file from an incompatible dependency. Contact Microsoft when multiple unrelated applications or Windows components fail and the application publisher confirms its package is intact.
