Short answer: AWS Elemental MediaPackage is not a standalone way to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7. It packages and originates video supplied by an upstream encoder; YouTube’s documented live workflow separately requires an encoder configured with YouTube’s stream URL and key. The documentation reviewed here does not establish MediaPackage as a direct YouTube ingest destination. MediaPackage can make sense when your system also needs packaging and delivery for other playback destinations, but it adds components and costs that may be unnecessary if YouTube is the only target.
What MediaPackage does—and what it does not
AWS describes Elemental MediaPackage as a just-in-time video packaging and origination service. In AWS’s documented live flow, an encoder such as MediaLive sends a live HLS feed to MediaPackage. MediaPackage packages the content and makes it available through endpoints to downstream playback devices or CDNs. It is a packaging/origination stage, not the encoder that creates the source feed.

YouTube’s encoder workflow is a separate handoff: configure an encoder with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS. An endpoint produced by MediaPackage should not be treated as interchangeable with YouTube’s ingest URL. The cited documentation does not show MediaPackage itself publishing directly to YouTube over RTMP(S).

That distinction is the central point of this review. MediaPackage may be part of a larger system, but a YouTube-only channel still needs a verified way to send an encoder output to YouTube. Do not assume that adding MediaPackage completes that connection; verify the exact output path and capabilities for every component and version you plan to deploy.

Is it a good fit for an always-on YouTube channel?
When it can fit
MediaPackage is more relevant when a live workflow needs more than a YouTube feed—for example, packaging for a website or app, delivery through a CDN, alternate playback formats, time-shifted viewing, or live-to-VOD workflows. Those capabilities depend on the architecture and configuration; they are not automatic benefits of creating a MediaPackage channel.
When it is probably unnecessary
If the sole goal is to keep pre-produced programming live on YouTube, ask what MediaPackage contributes beyond a direct encoder-to-YouTube workflow. You would still need an encoder and a documented YouTube handoff, while also operating and paying for packaging/origination services. For this narrow use case, MediaPackage is not a simple “upload videos and loop them to YouTube” service.

What an AWS-to-YouTube workflow requires
AWS’s documented live processing flow and YouTube’s encoder instructions describe different parts of the pipeline. At minimum, plan and verify each handoff rather than assuming a MediaPackage endpoint is the YouTube destination.
- Choose the source and encoder. MediaPackage receives a live feed from an upstream encoder; AWS names MediaLive as an example. Decide how the source is produced and encoded before designing packaging.
- Configure MediaPackage for its intended downstream role. Set up the channel and endpoint for the playback or distribution destinations you actually need. AWS’s getting-started guidance describes an encoder input, packaging, and endpoint delivery.
- Establish a separate YouTube output path. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then configure a compatible encoder to send the feed to YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Confirm that the specific encoder and architecture provide this output; the cited MediaPackage documentation does not establish a direct MediaPackage-to-YouTube relay.
- Test and monitor the full chain. Check the encoder output, MediaPackage input and endpoint where applicable, YouTube’s stream health, and the final viewer playback. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring. The sources cited here do not validate a particular AWS failover design, so test recovery behavior in the deployment you build.
YouTube settings and continuous-stream operations
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers protocol, codec, frame rate, keyframes, and bitrate. YouTube recommends RTMPS and publishes bitrate guidance according to resolution, frame rate, and codec. Choose settings as a coherent profile and ensure the encoder’s available upload capacity can sustain the selected bitrate; there is no single correct bitrate for every channel. Consult YouTube’s current settings page for the exact values that match your chosen output.

For a channel intended to run continuously, account for session handling as well as encoding. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after ending. That is a platform guidance threshold, not a MediaPackage limit, and it does not support a promise that a longer continuous session will be archived in full.
MediaPackage quotas: live manifests versus time shift
AWS publishes separate limits for live manifests and time-shifted or live-to-VOD use. These values describe manifest and viewing-window constraints, not the total runtime of a YouTube broadcast.

These are AWS’s published MediaPackage live quotas; check the quotas for your deployed version and region before implementation.
Cost: count the entire pipeline, not just packaging
AWS bases MediaPackage live charges on video ingested into a channel and content originated and packaged for that channel, measured in gigabytes. AWS recommends using a CDN such as CloudFront to cache content for more efficient viewer delivery. A complete estimate may also need to include the encoder, output profile, redundancy if configured, CDN delivery, and other services in the chosen architecture.

There is no responsible universal monthly total for an always-on YouTube system from the information available here. Estimate using the region, bitrate and output ladder, runtime, redundancy settings, expected viewer distribution, CDN cache assumptions, and current service rates. AWS reference-architecture figures apply to their stated sample configuration; they are not a forecast for a 24/7 YouTube channel. Use current AWS service pricing and calculators for a deployment-specific estimate, and account for audience delivery as well as ingestion and packaging.

Practical checks before choosing MediaPackage
- Draw the complete signal path from source through encoder, packaging, YouTube ingest, and any viewer-facing CDN.
- Verify the exact YouTube output path for the selected encoder; do not substitute a MediaPackage playback endpoint for YouTube’s stream URL.
- Decide whether packaging, alternate playback destinations, time shift, or live-to-VOD justify the additional AWS components.
- Estimate costs from your actual region, bitrate, runtime, redundancy and viewer-delivery assumptions rather than adopting a reference example as a monthly quote.
- Test stream health, interruption recovery, and archive expectations before relying on the system for continuous programming.
