For a simple loop of prerecorded videos on YouTube Live, OBS on a VPS is usually the more direct option to evaluate. OBS can loop a local file or playlist itself. MediaLive is a managed cloud encoding service aimed at more configured broadcast workflows; AWS’s documented OBS example also uses MediaPackage downstream. An Indian VPS is not inherently required: choose a location and plan based on your own capacity, network, cost and operating needs.
What each option does
The key distinction is between the source that repeats your video and the service that encodes and sends a live stream. In the straightforward OBS setup, OBS handles both: it loops the media and sends the encoded output to YouTube. MediaLive is an encoding service, not a desktop app that you install on a VPS. AWS describes a separate channel-automation example that loops an MP4, while its documented OBS contribution workflow sends OBS to MediaLive and then MediaPackage.

OBS on a VPS
OBS reads a file or playlist, encodes it, and connects to YouTube. You manage the VPS, OBS configuration, restarts and stream settings. OBS’s Media Source can loop a local file; its VLC Video source can play a playlist and has Loop Playlist enabled by default. VLC must be installed for that source to appear. AWS highlights high availability and automated channel provisioning, and describes an example that creates a channel and loops an MP4 file. Set up a looping OBS stream on a VPS
These steps describe the general workflow. The exact VPS desktop access, installed packages, network limits and restart controls vary by host; no particular Indian provider or plan has been verified. Before committing, confirm the host can sustain your intended encoder, output settings and traffic.
- Check the VPS before renting it. Confirm the operating system supports your intended OBS installation and encoder, that the CPU or GPU can sustain the resolution and frame rate, and that network throughput and data or egress allowances suit a continuous stream. OBS says CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; meeting baseline system requirements does not guarantee streaming capability. OBS system requirements
- Install OBS and prepare the media. Place the video files on storage the VPS can access. Use Media Source for one local file, or install VLC and use a VLC Video source for a playlist. Keep files in a stable location so a restart does not leave OBS pointing at a missing path.
- Configure the loop. For a single file, add a Media Source and enable its Loop option. For multiple files, add a VLC Video source, select the playlist and check Loop Playlist. Preview the transition between items and confirm the media’s audio behaves as intended.
- Set the output and encoder. Choose a resolution and frame rate the VPS can sustain, then select an available encoder and configure output settings for YouTube. There is no universally suitable bitrate in the available evidence: it depends on resolution, frame rate, codec and network capacity. Avoid choosing settings solely because a VPS advertises a particular CPU or bandwidth figure.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or open a live stream and obtain its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube or the applicable service connection method, and enter the stream key. Treat the key like a password; do not put it in a public document or share it. Start streaming from OBS and check the YouTube live control room for incoming video and audio before relying on the loop.
- Make it recoverable. Configure the VPS and OBS launch behavior so you can restore the stream after a host or application restart. Monitor the YouTube preview and the host rather than assuming that a connected process guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast. Your actual recovery options depend on the provider and workflow.
Choose a VPS location and capacity on evidence
An India-region VPS is an option, not a YouTube requirement established by these sources. No India-specific latency advantage, provider performance result or sustained encoding benchmark is established here. Compare candidate plans using the workload you intend to run, not the country label alone.

- Check sustained CPU or GPU encoding capacity at your chosen resolution and frame rate; brief or advertised peak capability is not enough to establish continuous performance.
- Check whether storage, memory, outbound bandwidth, data caps and egress charges cover your files and stream.
- Confirm how the provider handles reboots, maintenance, remote access and service monitoring.
- Test the intended scene and playlist under load. If OBS reports encoding or rendering problems, reduce output resolution or frame rate and simplify the scene. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting
What the AWS OBS example does—and does not—provide
AWS’s published OBS workflow is more than “run OBS on AWS”: it sends OBS’s contribution feed to MediaLive and then MediaPackage. Its guide labels the example as testing-oriented and warns that the single OBS input does not supply the two inputs in MediaLive’s redundancy model. Estimate costs without comparing unlike plans
A VPS bill depends on the selected provider and plan, usable compute, storage, network allowance and possible egress charges. No Indian provider price or quote is established here. MediaLive billing depends on configured inputs and outputs and whether resources are idle or running; AWS says a running output can continue to incur its output charge even when paused. Looped content still has to comply with YouTube rules
Encoder compatibility does not grant permission to stream a video or guarantee that a channel qualifies for any particular YouTube feature. Before going live, check current YouTube Live policies, copyright permissions for every video and audio track, and your channel’s eligibility and settings. Do not infer from the encoding workflow that continuous prerecorded content is automatically allowed or monetizable.
