What a prerecorded YouTube loop needs
An encoder turns video into a stream and sends it to YouTube. YouTube describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming. A prerecorded 24/7 setup needs more than encoding: something must play the file or playlist repeatedly, maintain the outgoing stream, and recover when a process or connection fails.

In YouTube’s encoder workflow, you enable live streaming, create or select a stream in Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key, configure the encoder, and start sending. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not expose it in screenshots, public configuration files, or logs. Why MediaLive is not a simple loop player
AWS positions MediaLive as a real-time, broadcast-grade video-processing service. It can process live sources and use schedules to add or switch inputs. AWS also documents a CDK example that creates a channel looping an MP4, so looping is possible in an AWS architecture; that example should not be mistaken for a one-click hosted playlist product. Building an AWS solution may involve channel configuration and the surrounding components needed to store, schedule, and deliver media.

Choose based on your actual workflow
Use a cloud playout service for unattended prerecorded programming
If the videos are already finished and the channel should run while your own equipment is off, hosted playout most directly addresses the need. YouTube lists Gyre and Upstream as options for 24/7 cloud streaming. Looping Stream describes a workflow of uploading files, ordering a playlist, and sending it continuously from cloud workers. Check each provider’s current destination support, file and playlist limits, resolution, storage, recovery behavior, monitoring, trial terms, and total cost at your intended runtime.

Use OBS when local control matters
OBS is appropriate when you want to build scenes, combine sources, or control the outgoing stream directly, and can keep the host and its uplink available. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software at no charge. For unattended operation, remember that the computer or VPS, power, operating system, encoder process, and network are all dependencies. A VPS shifts the machine off-site but does not remove maintenance or the need to keep its streaming process healthy.

Use MediaLive when the broader AWS workflow earns its complexity
MediaLive is a better fit when the stream is one part of a production workflow involving real-time sources, scheduled input changes, or other AWS media services. For a single recurring file or playlist, compare the full setup and runtime cost against a dedicated cloud playout service before choosing it.

Consider standalone hardware only for a hardware-led setup
YouTube’s encoder guide says the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream feature supports scheduled prerecorded playback to YouTube Live without a computer. This may suit an operator who wants a dedicated encoder appliance, but it is more specialized than a basic cloud loop; check current availability and compatibility before investing.
Configure the YouTube stream correctly
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Its listed RTMP/RTMPS video codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; listed audio choices include AAC and MP3. Follow the selected encoder’s controls for entering YouTube’s server URL and stream key, and keep the key private.

These are YouTube-published recommendations, not guarantees for every connection or encoder. Select settings that your sustained upload connection can support, test before going live, and monitor stream health. YouTube’s settings and guidance can change; consult its current live encoder settings when configuring a new stream.

Decide whether you need a saved VOD
YouTube says streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived. That guidance is not a guarantee that a longer continuous stream will be archived. If preserving a replay matters, design around YouTube’s stated limit and check current platform behavior before running a longer session. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

Use content you have the right to broadcast
Only stream media your channel owns or is authorized to use. Repeating a video does not itself make the stream eligible for monetization or compliant with YouTube rules. Review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies, including its treatment of repetitive or reused content, before building a channel around a loop. Looping Stream also advises customers to follow YouTube policies, but that is provider guidance rather than a substitute for YouTube’s rules.
Do not assume any method guarantees uninterrupted playback
A local encoder depends on local power, software, and connectivity. A cloud service moves the encoder and network path to provider infrastructure, but the provider, source file, and YouTube remain dependencies. Looping Stream notes possible interruptions from platform outages, invalid keys, and source-file problems and says zero interruptions cannot be promised. For any method, test the full run and monitor stream health rather than assuming an unattended stream will stay healthy indefinitely.
Compare total cost and operating effort
Compare options over the runtime you actually need, not just by their starting price. Include setup time, compute or hardware, storage, network, recovery, and monitoring. For MediaLive, price depends on the AWS region and configured inputs, outputs, add-ons, and hours running; an always-running channel can accrue charges during periods without content or output. For a cloud playout subscription, check the included storage and limits, billing period, destination, and recovery terms. For a local computer or VPS, account for the machine and the ongoing work of keeping its source and encoder available.

Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that live streaming is enabled, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the encoder is actually sending. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Regenerate or replace a key if it has been exposed, then update the encoder configuration.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: Check sustained upload capacity, reduce bitrate or resolution if necessary, and use YouTube’s recommended constant bitrate and keyframe settings. Run a test and watch stream health before relying on the setup unattended.
- The stream starts but the playlist stops: Confirm the source file plays through to its end, the playlist or repeat setting is configured, and the host process or service is still running. Inspect logs without revealing the stream key.
- A MediaLive channel costs money while apparently idle: AWS says a running channel can accrue input, output, and add-on charges even when there is no incoming content or output. Stop resources that are no longer needed and verify the current billing state and configuration in AWS.
- A long run has no saved replay: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; longer runs are not guaranteed to be archived. Check current YouTube behavior and plan a separate recording or shorter sessions if a VOD is essential.
- A stream is interrupted despite a cloud setup: Check YouTube stream status, the validity of the key, the source media, and provider status or recovery guidance. Cloud hosting reduces dependence on your home computer; it cannot eliminate destination or service failures.
