There is no universal cost winner. To compare AWS EC2 with a home PC for an always-on YouTube playlist stream, calculate the full monthly cost for the same stream quality and runtime: on EC2, include the instance, storage, data transfer and any other services; at home, use the PC’s measured power draw, your electricity tariff and any hardware cost. The answer depends on those inputs, plus how much you value recovery from outages and the effort of keeping the stream running.
What the comparison needs to answer
Compare like with like: the same stream duration, resolution and bitrate, and a comparable expectation for uptime. Then assess more than the bill. A useful decision includes four dimensions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Monthly cash cost: EC2 compute and related charges versus home electricity and any incremental hardware expense.
- Continuity and recovery: what happens when the home connection, power or computer fails, or when a cloud instance or stream stops.
- Stream quality and network capacity: whether the machine and its internet connection can sustain the chosen stream.
- Operational work and YouTube policy: who monitors and restores the stream, and whether the playlist is cleared for use and suitable for monetization.
There is no directly comparable published monthly price for this exact workload. Without your EC2 configuration and region, home power draw and electricity rate, a single total would be misleading.
How to estimate the EC2 monthly cost
EC2 On-Demand is usage-based. AWS says On-Demand Instances charge for compute capacity by the hour or second, with a 60-second minimum and no long-term commitment. The actual bill can also include storage, public IPv4 in applicable cases, data transfer and other services. See the AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing page for current rates and conditions.

Record the configuration before estimating
- AWS Region, instance family and size, and operating system.
- Storage volume size and type, plus any snapshots.
- Whether the instance needs a public IPv4 address.
- Expected internet data transfer out for the stream and any other services used.
- Monthly runtime and the stream’s resolution and bitrate.
Use the calculator, then verify the bill components
Enter those workload assumptions in the AWS Pricing Calculator. AWS describes calculator figures as estimates: applicable taxes are excluded, and actual fees depend on actual usage and other factors. Check the selected service rates and your account’s usage rather than treating the result as a guaranteed bill.
AWS’s pricing page states that customers receive 100 GB/month of internet data transfer out free, aggregated across AWS services and Regions, with China and GovCloud excluded. This is a qualified allowance, not a blanket promise that a particular stream’s transfer will be free; check the page’s current conditions and your account usage.
How to estimate the home-PC monthly cost
The words “home PC” do not establish an electricity cost. Measure or otherwise establish the computer’s average power draw at the wall while the intended encoder and playlist are running, then apply your local tariff and actual runtime. A plug-in electricity monitor can help measure consumption; no particular model is established here.

Gather the home inputs
- Average wall draw during the actual streaming workload, in watts.
- Hours the PC will run during the billing period.
- Your electricity price per kilowatt-hour.
- Whether the PC would already be on for other uses.
- Whether you are treating existing hardware as a sunk cost or buying hardware specifically for streaming.
For an electricity-only estimate, convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000, multiply by runtime hours, then multiply by your price per kilowatt-hour. Add any incremental hardware expense separately. If the machine would already be running, make clear whether you are comparing only added electricity or allocating its full consumption to the stream.
Compare the two options without assuming a winner
| Factor | AWS EC2 | Home PC |
|---|---|---|
| Cost inputs | Region, instance and operating system, storage, public IPv4 where applicable, outbound transfer and other services; estimate with AWS Pricing Calculator. | Measured average wall draw, runtime, local electricity tariff, and whether hardware is existing or newly purchased. |
| Network and quality | Choose a configuration and network capacity that can sustain the target stream. No configuration-specific performance result is established here. | Confirm the PC and home upload connection can sustain the target stream. YouTube advises that available upload bandwidth exceed total stream bitrate and recommends 20% headroom; see YouTube’s streaming tips. |
| Continuity | Cloud operation avoids dependence on the home PC being on, but no uptime figure for a particular EC2 setup is established here. | Continuity depends on the home PC, electricity and internet connection; no quantified comparison with EC2 is established here. |
| Work and recovery | You remain responsible for configuring and monitoring the instance and stream, and for responding to failures. | You remain responsible for keeping the PC and connection available and restoring the stream after interruptions. |
For a defensible decision, calculate both monthly cash totals using the same workload assumptions, then decide whether a lower estimate outweighs the operational burden and failure exposure for your setup. The available information does not support a universal EC2-versus-home reliability score or cost verdict.
Make sure the stream is viable under YouTube’s rules
Streaming setup and connection
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming. Its guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Start in advance and monitor stream quality. The upload connection needs capacity above the total stream bitrate; YouTube recommends 20% headroom. A connection disruption can break the stream.

Rights to playlist content
YouTube’s live-stream terms make the provider responsible for having necessary rights to the live content, including music licensing rights, and for complying with applicable laws and regulations. Owning a recording or finding it online does not by itself establish that you have the rights needed to stream it. Public-performance and other licensing requirements depend on the content and territories involved; clear those rights before broadcasting.
Monetization is a separate question
A stream that runs continuously is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policy identifies repetitive or mass-produced material as ineligible under its inauthentic-content policy. The policy clarification dated July 15, 2025 renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content.” A playlist intended to earn revenue still needs to meet YouTube’s policies and provide viewer value through materially varied substance.

For a YouTube playlist stream, StreamNeo is a third option: it keeps uploaded videos live from the cloud, so neither a home computer nor a self-managed EC2 instance has to stay on. It streams to YouTube only; it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. See StreamNeo for the service details.

Quick Recap
Common cost and stream-estimation mistakes
- Counting only EC2 compute: include storage, transfer, applicable public IPv4 and other services rather than comparing the instance line item with a home electricity bill.
- Treating 100 GB as universal free transfer: the allowance has stated exclusions and conditions; check current pricing and account usage.
- Using a PC’s rated power instead of actual draw: measure under the intended encoder and playlist workload.
- Ignoring incremental hardware: distinguish an existing PC from a purchase made for streaming.
- Choosing bitrate without upload headroom: check the sustained upload capacity against total stream bitrate and YouTube’s recommended 20% margin.
- Assuming continuous playback guarantees revenue: verify content rights and monetization eligibility separately from technical operation.
