Avowed is a single-player, first-person fantasy action RPG set in Eora. A focused run through the main story takes about 20–25 hours on Easy or Story difficulty, according to GameSpot’s 2025 estimate; exploring all four regions, completing side and companion quests, and investigating points of interest takes considerably longer. You can select a difficulty, use assists, and—on versions with the anniversary update—fine-tune enemy health, damage, and speed. There is no multiplayer or co-op, and companions do not have traditional romance routes. How long is the Avowed campaign?
For a main-story-focused playthrough, plan on roughly 20–25 hours when playing on Easy or Story difficulty. GameSpot published that estimate in 2025, so treat it as a typical range rather than a guaranteed timer. Your save can finish sooner or later depending on how often you leave the critical path, how much dialogue you pursue, and how thoroughly you search each area.

Main story versus a broader playthrough
Avowed is divided across four regions with optional content around the central narrative. Companion quests, side quests, environmental discoveries, and points of interest all add time outside the main missions. A player who moves directly from one critical-path objective to the next may stay near the published estimate; a player who investigates each region and follows companion stories will take substantially longer.

Why published times vary
Difficulty changes the pace of combat, while exploration and optional objectives determine how often you stop progressing the main plot. In a 2024 Game Informer interview, game director Carrie Patel described the scope as roughly comparable to The Outer Worlds, but she did not present that comparison as a fixed completion time. The useful takeaway is scale: Avowed is built as a substantial, self-contained RPG rather than a short linear campaign, yet it does not promise one universal number of hours.

What difficulty options does Avowed have?
Avowed supports selectable difficulty modes and assists, allowing you to choose how demanding combat feels. The PlayStation listing describes the challenge as customizable rather than locked to one setting. The original release provides preset modes; a later anniversary update adds custom game difficulty modifiers for finer control.

When creating a game, choose the preset that matches your preferred balance between combat pressure and story progression. Easy and Story are the settings associated with the 20–25-hour focused estimate, but selecting them is not a guarantee of that duration. Assists can reduce friction for players who want to concentrate on exploration, dialogue, or the narrative.

Custom modifiers in the anniversary update
The anniversary update lets you adjust individual aspects of challenge instead of moving between only broad presets. The documented modifier categories include:
- Enemy health: increase or reduce how much damage opponents can absorb.
- Enemy damage: change the punishment for taking a hit.
- Enemy speed: alter how quickly hostile characters move or respond.
Exact availability depends on the version installed. If you do not see custom modifiers, confirm that the game has received the anniversary update for your platform. Preset difficulty and custom modifiers are separate systems: a preset establishes the overall profile, while the newer controls let you tune specific factors.
How to choose and adjust difficulty
- At new-game setup, select the preset difficulty that best matches your desired challenge. Easy or Story is appropriate if you want the least combat resistance while following the narrative.
- Enable any available assists on the same setup screen if you want additional help without changing your broader play style.
- On an updated installation, open the in-game settings or difficulty screen and look for the entry labeled Custom Modifiers or equivalent. Menu wording can vary by platform and version.
- Change one category at a time—health, damage, or speed—so you can identify which adjustment solves a problem. Revisit the setting if combat becomes either too easy or too punishing.
This system is useful for a mixed party of players: you can keep a normal preset while lowering enemy damage, or preserve tougher enemies while reducing their health. The available controls are intended to tailor the experience, not to create a competitive multiplayer ruleset.
Is Avowed multiplayer or co-op?
No. Avowed is designed as a one-player campaign. The PlayStation store lists it as “1 player,” and developer interviews describe a focused narrative experience built around authored companions rather than a shared online world. There is no co-op mode, competitive multiplayer, MMO structure, or online party system.

What single-player means in practice
You experience the story from one player character’s perspective and make the decisions for that campaign. Companions can accompany you and contribute their own dialogue and personal stories, but they are not additional human-controlled players. Buying the game on a platform with online services does not add a cooperative mode.
If you are choosing Avowed specifically for a two-person campaign, it does not meet that requirement. The appropriate expectation is a solo RPG whose social depth comes from conversations, companion relationships, and narrative choices inside one save.
Can you romance companions in Avowed?
There are no traditional romanceable companions or romance questlines in Avowed. Romance was considered during development, but Carrie Patel and Gabe Paramo explained in a Game Informer interview that the team chose to devote resources to deeper companion characterization and to keep the project within scope.

“No romance” does not mean companions are decorative. They have personal stories, dialogue, opinions, and meaningful relationships with the player character. Spending time with them can reveal additional context and character development even though the game does not lead to a dating path, romantic commitment, or romance-specific ending.

Approach companion content as narrative and interpersonal storytelling rather than as a relationship simulator. Talk with companions when new dialogue becomes available, follow their personal objectives when offered, and pay attention to how your decisions affect the tone of those relationships. Those activities add depth to a playthrough, but they do not unlock a conventional romance route.

Edition prices reported by Xbox
Xbox Wire reported a $49.99 standard edition and a $59.99 premium edition in 2026. Those figures are the prices cited by Xbox Wire for the editions it covered; they are not a universal price for every storefront or region, and the PS5 listing may use different pricing.

How to plan your first playthrough
For a shorter, story-led run
- Select Easy or Story difficulty.
- Follow the critical-path missions and treat side quests as optional detours.
- Use assists or custom modifiers if combat slows your progress.
- Expect the result to be near, but not guaranteed to equal, the 20–25-hour estimate.
For a fuller RPG experience
- Explore each of the four regions instead of moving directly between main objectives.
- Investigate points of interest and complete side quests as you encounter them.
- Spend time with companions and pursue their personal stories.
- Keep a difficulty that makes combat engaging; use individual modifiers rather than abandoning optional content when a single factor feels off.
For players seeking romance or co-op
Adjust your expectations before buying. Companion arcs provide substantial characterization but no romance routes, and the campaign cannot be played cooperatively. Avowed is a solo narrative RPG first, with challenge customization and exploration serving as its main replay and pacing variables.
