Avowed beginner’s guide: what to do first and which skills to unlock

Start by finishing Avowed’s opening combat prompts, then establish every camp you encounter, gather upgrade materials, keep companions in your active party, and spend your first ability points on effects you will actually use. Avowed has no fixed class. Its Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, and Godlike trees can be used independently or mixed together, and you can reset abilities and attributes for skeyts. That makes your first build a testable plan rather than a permanent choice.

This guide explains the first hour, how the skill system works, and practical opening choices for melee, ranged, stealth, wizard, and hybrid characters.

What to do first in Avowed

Your first decisions should improve survivability, travel, and flexibility before you chase a specialized damage build. Follow the opening objective until the basic combat and ability prompts are complete, then use the following priorities whenever you enter a new area.

1. Finish the opening combat tutorial

Follow the initial objective until the game has introduced its basic attacks, defense, and ability prompts. Do not rush past those instructions. Avowed’s best early skills depend on how you prefer to engage: blocking and countering, maintaining distance, using a grimoire, or creating space with companion abilities. The opening fights are a safe place to notice whether your timing, range, and resource management feel comfortable.

2. Check the map and minimap constantly

Open the map when you enter a new region and glance at the minimap while moving. Upgrade plants and materials are easy to walk past, and early improvements are limited by what you collect. The official Xbox beginner guide specifically highlights the Paradisan Ladder. Its minimap icon and vertical marker help you locate it, including when it is above or below your current position.

Collect materials as part of your normal route instead of making a separate farming trip. If a marker indicates a vertical location, look for stairs, ledges, ladders, or a nearby path rather than searching only at ground level.

3. Establish every party camp you find

Camps are your practical hub for crafting and upgrades. Activate one whenever you discover it. Once established, the official guide says you can fast travel to that camp from almost anywhere through the map, which turns a difficult return journey into a short preparation stop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use camps before a difficult encounter to review your equipment, apply available upgrades, and confirm that your active weapon or grimoire matches the abilities you have selected. Camps also make experimentation cheaper in time: you can return to a known location, change your setup, and test it in nearby fights.

4. Keep companions with you while exploring

Recruit companions as they become available and leave them in the party while you learn a region. Their abilities unlock or improve as they level, and they are more useful when you actively trigger those abilities instead of treating companions as passive damage sources.

The Xbox guide uses Kai’s leap as an early example. It can stun and taunt an enemy, creating a brief opening for a vulnerable caster to reposition. In practice, watch for moments when an opponent is about to reach you or an ally: a companion ability that interrupts, distracts, or moves an enemy can be worth more than another small attack.

5. Upgrade the setup you actually carry

Early materials are limited. Improve the weapon, defensive tool, or grimoire that you use in most fights instead of spreading rare materials across several untested options. You can experiment with skills at relatively low cost, but upgrading every possible weapon before choosing a fighting style can leave your preferred setup behind.

How Avowed’s skill system works

There are four broad trees, not four locked classes

Avowed presents four expansive skill trees:

  • Fighter: close-range pressure, weapon techniques, defense, and control suited to front-line combat.
  • Ranger: weapon-focused options, mobility, and utility that can support ranged or stealth-oriented play.
  • Wizard: spells, grimoire use, and abilities that depend on managing magical resources and casting opportunities.
  • Godlike: a separate set of powerful abilities that can be combined with any of the other approaches.

The launch description and game director Carrie Patel’s official Xbox Podcast explanation both present mixed archetypes as a core feature. You can build entirely within one tree, or combine trees to make a battlemage, a stealth-capable fighter, or another hybrid. A tree’s name describes its theme; it does not prohibit you from taking a useful ability elsewhere.

Ability choices arrive at level-up milestones

Each level-up milestone grants an ability choice. Some milestones also improve attributes, as Patel explained on the official podcast. Because abilities and attribute improvements do not necessarily arrive in the same way at every milestone, read the level-up screen carefully rather than assuming every point has an identical purpose.

Read the complete tooltip before spending a point

Ability tiers can require a character level and prerequisite abilities. A skill that looks attractive in the tree may not be immediately available, or it may require an earlier investment that changes your plan. Inspect the full tooltip, including requirements, resource cost, duration, range, and whether the effect is passive or activated.

Do not reject a branch because it appears to belong to a different archetype. The official beginner guide calls out Parry, a Ranger passive that can benefit a Fighter-focused character. Cross-tree value is one of the reasons to examine all four trees before committing to a narrow route.

Respecs make early experimentation safe

You can reset abilities by spending skeyts. The Steam starter guide also describes resetting attribute and ability points for a small amount of money. The exact cost can make repeated changes less convenient than planning, but an early mistake is recoverable.

A useful routine is to choose one or two core abilities, fight through several encounters, and then reset if the animation, range, timing, or resource cost does not suit you. Treat the first build as a short trial, not a permanent verdict.

Which skills should you unlock first?

Choose by effect rather than by tree label. Your first points should solve the problem you encounter most often: reaching enemies, surviving pressure, controlling a dangerous target, maintaining distance, or casting reliably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Melee or front-line characters

Start with a reliable gap-closer or interrupt such as Charge when its behavior fits your weapon plan. A gap-closer lets you reach ranged enemies and an interrupt can stop an attack before you are forced into a defensive scramble.

Next, consider a defensive timing tool such as Parry if you are comfortable blocking and countering. It is a Ranger passive, but the Xbox beginner guide specifically identifies it as a useful early cross-tree choice for a Fighter-oriented character. Keep at least one control option available for opponents that guard, rush, or otherwise deny straightforward attacks.

  • Best first question: Do you lose fights because enemies stay out of reach, or because you cannot survive once you arrive?
  • If reach is the problem: prioritize Charge or another movement-based option that matches your weapon.
  • If survival is the problem: prioritize Parry or another defensive effect, then add control.
  • If groups overwhelm you: use a companion ability to create space while you isolate one target.

Ranged or stealth-oriented characters

Begin with Ranger abilities that improve the weapon you are actually carrying. A bow-focused opening and a different ranged setup should not receive identical spending if their handling and resource demands differ in your play.

After your main weapon works reliably, add a defensive or mobility pickup from another tree. You do not need to invest in every Ranger branch, and you should not spend several points on a weapon you rarely equip. Avowed rewards targeted combinations: a small number of abilities that reinforce your real combat loop are more useful than a broad collection of unused bonuses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose weapon improvement first when ordinary attacks make up most of your damage.
  • Choose mobility or defense when enemies frequently close the gap.
  • Use stealth as an opportunity to select encounters, not as a reason to ignore general survivability.
  • Keep a companion ability ready for the moment stealth breaks and several enemies converge.

Wizard or grimoire users

Take an early spell you expect to cast often and keep a grimoire equipped so that spell is available during combat. Your first Wizard point should make your normal rotation more reliable, not merely unlock an impressive option that you rarely have the resources or opportunity to use.

GameSpot identifies Minor Missiles as a strong early Wizard unlock and notes that its first rank is enough for the early game. Treat later ranks as an upgrade after your core defenses and resources are stable. If you are regularly interrupted or run out of essence, a defensive or control choice may improve your actual results more than immediately increasing the spell’s rank.

  • Equip the grimoire before testing whether a spell fits your routine.
  • Use one dependable spell repeatedly before adding several expensive options.
  • Watch essence use and casting windows; an ability is only useful when you can safely cast it.
  • Use companion control, such as Kai’s leap, to create the space needed for a spell.

Hybrid and undecided characters

If you want to combine weapon attacks and magic, begin with one dependable action from your preferred distance, then add a complementary effect from another tree. A battlemage does not need equal investment everywhere. For example, you might use a front-line weapon as your default, take Parry for defense, and add one grimoire spell for targets that are difficult to reach.

If you are undecided, spend only enough points to test a style. Because resets cost skeyts, early restraint preserves the option to change direction without paying to undo a large chain of prerequisites.

Fighter, Ranger, or Wizard: how to compare an opening

The following comparison is about how an opening feels and what it asks of you, not a damage ranking. No reliable owner-published statistics establish beginner success rates, damage advantages, completion times, or skill-pick rates, so choose according to your preferred decisions in combat.

Opening Engagement distance Resource demand Control and safety Gear dependence Respec flexibility
Fighter-focused Close range Weapon rhythm, stamina, and defensive timing Blocks, interrupts, gap-closing, and counterattacks Concentrated on the weapon and defenses you carry Core defensive choices remain useful in mixed builds
Ranger-focused Mid to long range, or stealth-selected engagements Weapon handling and positioning Mobility, distance, stealth, and cross-tree defenses such as Parry Strongest when upgrades follow one regularly equipped weapon Mobility and defensive picks can remain useful after a change of weapon
Wizard-focused Usually at a distance, with casting windows Essence, spell timing, and grimoire management Spells, control, and companion-created space Requires a grimoire and enough support for the spells you actually cast First-rank utility can remain valuable even if you later add weapon skills

Use the table as a decision aid: select the opening whose resource and positioning demands you are willing to practice. The trees are not sealed paths, so a later respec can move you toward a different column.

A practical first-build test

Use this sequence whenever you are unsure whether an ability deserves another point.

  1. Identify the repeated problem. Write down what ends fights: being unable to reach an enemy, losing health while closing, running out of essence, or failing to control a dangerous target.
  2. Select one ability that addresses that problem. Read its complete tooltip and check character-level and prerequisite requirements.
  3. Equip the supporting gear. Carry the weapon or grimoire that makes the ability available and upgrade that setup before spreading materials elsewhere.
  4. Test it in several ordinary fights. Pay attention to animation length, range, timing, resource cost, and whether companions can create a safe opening.
  5. Keep or reset. If the ability changes the problem you identified, retain it. If it does not fit your timing or resource budget, reset with skeyts and test a different effect.

This method prevents a common mistake: judging an ability by its description alone. A powerful-looking option can be a poor fit if you cannot safely activate it or if it competes with the rest of your equipment for the same resource.

How to use companions in early fights

Trigger abilities instead of waiting for passive damage

Companions become more valuable as their abilities unlock or improve with level. Watch their ability prompts and deliberately activate them when the effect solves a tactical problem. A stun, taunt, leap, or other control effect can interrupt an enemy’s plan and give you time to heal, cast, reposition, or focus a vulnerable target.

Pair companion control with your own range

Ranged characters can use a companion’s control to maintain distance. Wizards can use that opening to cast. Front-line characters can use it to isolate a target before committing to a close-range exchange. If an enemy rushes you, do not wait until you are surrounded; trigger the ability when it creates the most space.

Review the party after a level-up

As companions improve, revisit how their abilities interact with your build. A party member who can hold attention may let you spend your next point on damage or mobility instead of another defensive tool. Conversely, if your party lacks reliable control, keep one of your own abilities available for that role.

Upgrade and travel priorities

Materials come before variety

Gather plants and crafting materials during exploration, with special attention to Paradisan Ladder and other marked resources. Early upgrades are more valuable when concentrated on the equipment you use in nearly every encounter. Before spending a rare material, ask whether the item will remain part of your regular setup after your next respec.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Camps shorten every preparation loop

Establish camps promptly because fast travel to an established camp is available from almost anywhere through the map, according to the official guide. This lets you return for crafting, upgrades, party adjustments, or a skill reset without retracing an entire region.

Do not confuse more equipment with more options

Carrying several alternatives is useful when each solves a distinct problem, but upgrading every weapon immediately divides your materials. First make one reliable setup work. Add a second option when you understand why you need it: a different range, a spell-access tool, or a response to a particular enemy pattern.

Common beginner mistakes and how to fix them

  • Choosing a tree as if it were a class. Fix: inspect all four trees and judge abilities by effect. Parry demonstrates why a Ranger passive can belong in a Fighter build.
  • Spending points before reading prerequisites. Fix: open the full tooltip and confirm the required character level and earlier abilities.
  • Buying ranks for a spell you rarely cast. Fix: keep the first rank of a frequently used spell, such as Minor Missiles, and stabilize defenses or resources before adding later ranks.
  • Ignoring companions during combat. Fix: trigger their control abilities when an enemy closes or when you need a casting window.
  • Walking past upgrade materials. Fix: check the minimap, follow vertical markers, and collect Paradisan Ladder and other useful materials along your route.
  • Leaving camps inactive. Fix: establish each camp as soon as you find it so fast travel and preparation remain available.
  • Upgrading too many weapons. Fix: spend rare materials on the setup you actually use until your preferred style is clear.
  • Refusing to change a poor fit. Fix: test an ability for several fights, then reset abilities or attributes with skeyts if its timing, range, or cost does not suit you.

Three safe opening roadmaps

Front-line roadmap

  1. Choose the weapon you enjoy using in the opening fights.
  2. Take Charge when its gap-closing or interrupt behavior solves a recurring problem.
  3. Add Parry if you are willing to block and counter.
  4. Keep a control option available for guarding or rushing enemies.
  5. Upgrade that weapon and defensive setup at established camps before investing in a second style.

Ranged or stealth roadmap

  1. Invest in Ranger abilities that improve your equipped weapon.
  2. Use positioning and stealth to select favorable engagements.
  3. Add a mobility or defensive ability from another tree when enemies repeatedly close the distance.
  4. Use companion control when stealth ends or a group reaches you.
  5. Concentrate materials on the weapon you carry most often.

Wizard roadmap

  1. Equip a grimoire and select one spell you will cast frequently.
  2. Consider Minor Missiles at its first rank as an early Wizard option.
  3. Use companions to create casting space and monitor essence use.
  4. Add control or defense before buying additional ranks if survival or resources are limiting you.
  5. Respec after several fights if the spell’s timing or cost does not fit your routine.

Answers to the questions new players ask most

What should I do first in Avowed?

Complete the opening combat prompts, check the map and minimap for materials, collect Paradisan Ladder, establish camps, keep companions active, and upgrade the weapon or grimoire you actually use.

Which skills should I unlock first?

Pick the effect that solves your most frequent combat problem. Front-line players can test Charge and Parry; ranged players should improve their equipped weapon before adding mobility or defense; wizard players should equip a grimoire and consider a frequently cast spell such as Minor Missiles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I respec my character?

Yes. Abilities can be reset for skeyts, and the Steam starter guide also describes resetting attributes and abilities for a small amount of money. Use that option to correct a poor fit rather than continuing to spend points on an ability you do not enjoy.

Do I have to choose one class?

No. Avowed has Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, and Godlike trees, but no conventional class lock. You can stay within one tree or mix them to create a hybrid.
