At the time, his startup had reportedly raised about $2.5 million. Five months later, he launched Friend, an AI companion worn as a pendant and initially offered for a $99 preorder.
The headline describes the 2024 launch, not necessarily the product sold today. Friend’s official site now presents the pendant as an optional accessory to a free online AI companion, while WIRED has reported a newer, speaker-equipped version at a different price.

Who paid for friend.com?
Avi Schiffmann founded Friend after gaining attention as a teenager for creating a COVID-19 tracking website that attracted large daily audiences, according to GeekWire. He later left Harvard to pursue startups. “Harvard dropout” is a description of his background, not evidence that Harvard funded, endorsed or validated Friend.
Schiffmann said he paid about $1.8 million for the short, memorable friend.com domain. 404 Media reported a transaction of $1,887,843 dated February 6, 2024. Coverage put Friend’s early funding at approximately $2.5 million, so the published figures imply that the domain represented roughly 75.5% of that amount. That percentage is a calculation from reported figures, not an audited company disclosure.

Why spend so much on a name?
Schiffmann argued that the exact-match domain was central to a product meant to feel like a personal, always-present companion. A name such as “tryfriend.ai,” he suggested, would make the relationship feel more like a software product than a personified service. Critics saw the purchase differently: a young company appeared to devote most of its reported early capital to branding before proving hardware reliability, demand or retention. Both interpretations can be true—the domain may have strategic value while still representing a highly concentrated use of scarce cash.
What the original Friend wearable did
The July 2024 Friend was a small pendant with an always-on microphone that connected to a phone over Bluetooth. The phone handled much of the interaction: users spoke to the pendant, and Friend replied through text messages or notifications. WIRED described an intentionally stripped-down product focused on “vibes” and companionship rather than conventional assistant tasks. Its reported battery estimate was about 15 hours.
Friend was marketed to comment on experiences, encourage the wearer and develop an ongoing personality. It could also send unsolicited messages, rather than waiting for a command. Schiffmann described the broader ambition as a digital-relationships business, not simply a hardware company.

- Launch price: $99 preorder.
- Planned shipping: January 2025.
- Subscription: No paid subscription was advertised at launch.
- Primary output: Phone text and notifications, rather than a standalone speaker conversation.
This positioning separated Friend from products built to control smart-home devices, summarize meetings or automate work. The trade-off was that buyers were paying for an ambient emotional presence, not a general-purpose productivity assistant.

How the product and pricing changed
Friend’s current official site describes the online AI companion as free to chat with and the pendant as optional hardware. It says the service is built on Google Gemini models, ships to the United States, Canada and the European Union, and includes a one-year warranty for the accessory. The official product page lists a one-time price of $129: friend.com’s hardware page.
That is not the only current price reported publicly. A 2026 WIRED report described a newer Friend pendant with a built-in speaker and listed it at $249. The two figures may refer to different generations or listings. Buyers should identify the exact model at checkout rather than treating either price as universal.
| Product snapshot | Price and status | Interaction and availability |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 launch pendant | $99 preorder; shipping planned for January 2025 | Bluetooth to phone; text and notifications; no paid subscription advertised |
| Current official listing | $129 one-time accessory; online chat listed as free | Official site says Gemini-based, ships to US, Canada and EU; one-year warranty stated |
| Newer model reported by WIRED | $249 | Speaker-equipped pendant; model distinction from the $129 listing should be confirmed |
The privacy problem is bigger than “always listening”
A microphone that passively monitors its surroundings can capture people who never agreed to use the service. Conversations may contain names, addresses, health details, workplace information or other sensitive material. Recording and interception rules differ by U.S. state and by country, and workplaces, schools, clinics and legal offices may impose stricter policies.

Friend’s privacy policy says it collects personal information associated with its device, website, applications and services. It says the company seeks to retain identifiable information only as long as needed for business purposes and aims to comply with the GDPR, the California Consumer Privacy Act and applicable state laws: Friend’s privacy policy. Those statements do not establish compliance in every jurisdiction.

Launch coverage reported that Friend said conversations would be encrypted and that audio or transcripts would not be retained beyond the system’s “context window.” Those are company claims, not an independent security audit. Before buying, a user should find clear answers to these questions:
- Is there a physical mute switch or an unmistakable recording indicator?
- What leaves the pendant: raw audio, transcripts, summaries, embeddings or only metadata?
- Which data is stored, for how long, and can every category be deleted or exported?
- Are conversations used to train models?
- What happens when the phone, Wi-Fi or cellular connection is unavailable?
- How are bystanders’ voices handled?
“Always listening” also does not automatically mean “permanently recording everything.” The important issue is the complete data flow from microphone to phone, cloud service and deletion controls.

Capital allocation
The domain purchase looked disproportionate beside the reported funding. Critics argued that money would have been better spent on engineering, testing, support and evidence that users would keep wearing the device.

Some observers characterized the first pendant as a Bluetooth microphone linked to an AI service. The comparison reflected its dependence on a phone and its limited physical interface.

Privacy and loneliness
Passive listening raised consent concerns, while commentators questioned whether an artificial companion could ease loneliness or instead encourage withdrawal. The Independent also placed Friend in the skeptical climate surrounding the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1, whose highly publicized launches prompted debate about the value of dedicated AI hardware.
Branding conflict
Another AI-wearable company, Based Hardware, had marketed a product as Friend. After Schiffmann’s launch and acquisition of friend.com, that product was renamed Omi. TechCrunch described Omi as more focused on productivity, transcription and contextual assistance. The reporting establishes a public branding conflict and rebrand, not a court ruling.
What was reported about Friend’s funding
Coverage reported approximately $2.5 million in funding from investors including Perplexity chief executive Aravind Srinivas and Solana founders Anatoly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal. Reports also cited a valuation of about $50 million. Unless Friend publishes financing documents, those figures should be treated as reported estimates rather than audited financial facts.

Should you buy an AI companion pendant?
It may fit if you want
- An ambient companion that is easier to access than opening a phone app.
- Encouragement, conversation and a persistent personality rather than task automation.
- A wearable form factor and you accept its phone and network dependence.
It is a poor fit if you need
- Reliable meeting transcription, smart-home control or productivity automation.
- Offline operation or independence from a nearby smartphone and cloud service.
- Minimal exposure of bystanders’ conversations.
- A therapist, medical device, emergency service or replacement for human support.
Check these failure points first
- Battery depletion, Bluetooth disconnections and a phone that is out of range.
- Inappropriate responses or misunderstandings in sensitive settings.
- A bystander objecting to capture.
- Account loss or a service shutdown that limits the hardware.
- Unclear compatibility when moving between hardware generations.
Phone-based companion apps avoid another battery and microphone, though they provide less ambient context. General-purpose voice assistants are usually stronger at task completion and ecosystem integration. Omi and similar wearables pursue more productivity-oriented uses. For serious loneliness, mental-health concerns or crisis situations, human relationships and qualified professional support are more appropriate than any AI companion.
Bottom line
Friend is a story about two bets: that friend.com was worth nearly $1.9 million as the foundation of an emotional brand, and that people would pay for a dedicated device that listens throughout the day. The original $99 pendant and its 2024 launch claims should be separated from the current $129 official accessory listing and the $249 speaker-equipped model reported by WIRED. If you are considering one, verify the model, checkout price, phone requirements, shipping region, warranty and data-retention controls before ordering.
