The short answer is that AVG’s official test page publishes no current numbers, only a note that its internal lab results are “indicative only.” The detailed speed and battery figures that do exist come from a 2014 AVG whitepaper about an older product, not the current TuneUp. A 2024 independent review praised TuneUp’s cleanup but found the tested version short on speed-tuning tools. TuneUp can clear clutter and manage startup and installed apps. Whether that makes your computer feel faster or lasts longer on battery depends on the machine and how you use it.
What AVG’s test page does and does not show
AVG’s English (US) TuneUp test hub is organized into four areas: Windows speed and cleaning, Windows battery life, Mac cleaning, and Android cleaning and battery life. Each area describes what AVG has tested, but the page itself carries the key qualification:

Read that literally. AVG says it has run internal tests. The public page does not publish figures, a test protocol, hardware specifications, operating system versions, or the TuneUp build used. It is a vendor claim that can be checked only against the methods AVG has disclosed elsewhere, and on the current page those methods are not spelled out.

What TuneUp does on each platform
The feature descriptions in AVG’s TuneUp FAQ establish which tools exist and what they are meant to do. They do not establish how much those tools improve any particular machine.
Windows
- Scanning: TuneUp scans for unnecessary items and performance problems.
- Cleaning: it removes system junk and browser data.
- Application management: it helps you review and manage installed programs.
- Disk optimization: it includes disk-related maintenance tools.
AVG states that scanning and resolving these issues may free disk space and improve system speed. That is the intended outcome described by the vendor, not a measured result.
One setting needs attention before you run it. AVG’s Windows instructions warn that Full Disk Cleaner mode can delete the contents of your Downloads folder, and advise reviewing those files before you proceed. Treat the scan results as a list to review, not a set of files that are all safe to remove.

Mac
- Clutter and browser cleaning
- Duplicate file finding
- Photo analysis
- App removal
- Management of startup items
According to the same FAQ, TuneUp on Mac requires a separate paid subscription and can be installed without AVG AntiVirus. The Mac feature set is not a copy of the Windows one. Do not assume that a Windows speed or battery test applies to the Mac version.
What the 2024 independent review found
COMPUTER BILD published its AVG TuneUp review on September 12, 2024. It gave the tested product a grade of 3.6, “ausreichend” in German school grading, which corresponds to adequate.
- Praised: the cleaning performance and the software updater. The reviewer also noted that TuneUp can deactivate programs.
- Criticized: the tested release had no autostart manager, no turbo mode, and no live optimization, which limited its ability to fix a sluggish PC. It also lacked an economy mode.
This is a single editorial review of one release from 2024. It is not a controlled benchmark, and two years is long enough for the feature set to change. Treat it as evidence of how the cleaning and tuning tools performed at that time, not as a description of the current version.

The only detailed speed and battery figures are from 2014
AVG’s 2014 Performance Test Whitepaper for the then-new AVG PC TuneUp (version 2.0, dated October 1, 2014, and credited to Sandro Villinger) is the source of the numerical claims often associated with TuneUp. These are historical vendor results for a different product. They are not current TuneUp outcomes.

Speed: 18% faster daily tasks on one older desktop
The whitepaper reports that, on one tested older desktop, the PCMark 8 score rose from 1,546 to 1,819 points, which it describes as 18% faster daily tasks. The vendor associates the gain with its PC TuneUp optimization setup at the time. This was one machine, one benchmark, and one configuration, and the whitepaper does not say that the same result would appear on another computer.
Battery: up to 59% longer, scenario by scenario
The whitepaper attributes its battery gains to Economy Mode and Flight Mode, which include CPU throttling and disabling unneeded hardware. The figures are scenario-specific:

How the whitepaper measured battery life
The whitepaper describes a looping PCMark Home workload, a 3D game, and a 1080p movie loop. Each battery run was performed three times and averaged, and the vendor says the results came from a controlled environment while acknowledging that perfect accuracy cannot be guaranteed.
That method explains where the numbers came from. It does not transfer to today’s product. The hardware, Windows version, power management, and TuneUp build have all changed, and the whitepaper does not provide enough detail to repeat its setup exactly.

In practical terms, cleanup can recover storage and remove selected clutter, responsiveness depends on what is actually slowing your computer, and battery runtime depends on workload, hardware, and settings. Current published evidence does not quantify those effects for today’s TuneUp.
How to test TuneUp on your own PC
If you want an answer for your own machine, separate the three outcomes and keep the conditions fixed.
- Record your Windows version (on Windows 11, Settings > System > About) and the TuneUp version shown in the application.
- Note free space on the system drive in File Explorer under This PC before any cleaning.
- Review your Downloads folder before running Full Disk Cleaner mode, because AVG warns that it can delete its contents.
- Run the cleanup and record how much space it actually freed. Report this as storage recovered, not as speed.
- Measure responsiveness separately: time boot-to-desktop and the launch of two or three frequently used apps, repeating each measurement three times. Use the same startup programs and background activity both times.
- For battery, set the same screen brightness and power mode (Settings > System > Power & battery on Windows 11), run the same workload, and discharge from full three times. Average the results and compare before and after TuneUp.
- Write up each result with its evidence type. A measurement you ran yourself is not the same as a vendor figure or an editorial review.
Running the same test on the same machine tells you what TuneUp changed on that computer. It does not tell you what AVG’s internal lab found, and it cannot confirm the 2014 figures.
