Avatar Universe Timeline Explained: Wan, Yangchen, Kyoshi, Roku, Aang, Korra and Seven Havens

The canonical Avatar succession is Wan → Yangchen → Kuruk → Kyoshi → Roku → Aang → Korra → Pavi. Wan is the first Avatar, Korra is the previous Avatar, and Avatar: Seven Havens introduces Pavi as the next one. The official timeline says more than 90 Avatars lived between Wan and Yangchen; it does not name most of them. There is no secret Avatar between Korra and Pavi, and the exact calendar length of the Korra-to-Pavi interval has not been established.

The complete Avatar timeline at a glance

Avatar Studios’ official chronology combines animated television, comics and novels. That list is a history of eras rather than a release-order checklist, so the medium matters when deciding what is essential to watch and what is supplementary reading.

Avatar or era What establishes the era Main conflict or change Screen-chronology status
Wan The Legend of Korra, Book Two, episodes 7–8, “Beginnings, Pt. 1” and “Beginnings, Pt. 2” Wan leaves the Spirit Wilds and becomes the first Avatar. Essential animated backstory
Unnamed Avatars Avatar Studios’ timeline summary More than 90 Avatars live between Wan and Yangchen; their individual stories remain largely untold. Historical gap
Yangchen The Rift, The Dawn of Yangchen, The Legacy of Yangchen Yangchen’s era is explored through comics and novels. Supplementary stories
Kuruk The Shadow of Kyoshi: Kuruk’s Story and “Escape from the Spirit World: Kuruk’s Story” Kuruk’s history is presented through a novel-related story and an animated web chapter. Supplementary stories
Kyoshi The Rise of Kyoshi, The Shadow of Kyoshi and “Avatar Day” Kyoshi’s life and legacy are expanded in novels, while “Avatar Day” introduces her era in the original animated series. “Avatar Day” is screen canon; novels add context
Roku Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Reckoning of Roku Roku’s friendship and eventual break with Prince Sozin shape the war that follows. Essential animated history, with supplementary material
Aang Avatar: The Last Airbender and its postwar comics Aang masters all four elements and ends the Fire Nation’s 100-year war. Essential original series; comics continue the era
Korra The Legend of Korra, Books One–Four, and subsequent comics Republic City, the Equalists, the Water Tribe civil war, Harmonic Convergence, the new Air Nation and Kuvira’s Earth Empire conflict. Essential sequel series; comics continue the era
Pavi Avatar: Seven Havens Pavi is the next Avatar in a world devastated by a cataclysm, with the Seven Havens serving as humanity’s last strongholds. Next screen era

Wan: the first Avatar

Wan is officially the first Avatar. His origin is told in The Legend of Korra Book Two, episodes 7 and 8, “Beginnings, Pt. 1” and “Beginnings, Pt. 2.” The two-part story follows Wan’s exile to the Spirit Wilds and the events that make him the first person to carry the Avatar role.

For a watch-only chronology, these episodes appear inside The Legend of Korra, long after Aang’s story. For in-universe history, however, Wan is the starting point. They explain why the Avatar cycle exists and establish the ancient separation between human and spirit worlds that later eras continue to revisit.

The long, mostly unnamed stretch before Yangchen

The official timeline does not jump directly from Wan to the first named Avatars in modern stories. Avatar Studios states that more than 90 Avatars lived between the eras of Wan and Yangchen. The same summary notes that thousands of stories from this period remain untold.

That statement is important for two reasons. First, the named list is not a complete list of every Avatar. Second, the absence of a character from a published story does not create a new mystery or imply that the cycle stopped. The succession continued through many Avatars whose names, nations and adventures have not yet been identified in the official material.

Yangchen: the earliest extensively published predecessor

Yangchen follows that unnamed succession. Her era appears in the comic The Rift and in the novels The Dawn of Yangchen and The Legacy of Yangchen. These works are part of the official timeline but are not required to understand the main televised plot from Aang through Korra.

Readers who want a political and historical view of the Avatar world before Kyoshi can use Yangchen’s stories as optional background. They should be read as supplementary works in the Yangchen era, not as additional seasons that need to be inserted into the animated watch order.

Kuruk: the Avatar before Kyoshi

Kuruk is the next named Avatar after Yangchen. His era is represented by The Shadow of Kyoshi: Kuruk’s Story and the television story “Escape from the Spirit World: Kuruk’s Story.” The official chronology therefore places Kuruk between Yangchen and Kyoshi even though viewers encounter him mainly through stories connected to later characters.

Kuruk’s placement also explains why Kyoshi’s novels include historical material about the Avatar who came before her. If you are following only the two major animated series, Kuruk is a predecessor referenced through the wider mythology rather than a separate television season.

Kyoshi: novels, “Avatar Day” and a major historical expansion

Kyoshi follows Kuruk. Her era includes the novels The Rise of Kyoshi and The Shadow of Kyoshi, as well as the Avatar: The Last Airbender episode “Avatar Day.” The novels provide the most sustained narrative about Kyoshi, while “Avatar Day” places her directly in the original animated series’ historical conversation.

The Rise of Kyoshi is the clearest optional reading choice for someone who wants more context before moving into Roku’s and Aang’s eras. It is not a prerequisite for the screen chronology, but it gives Kyoshi’s era a full novel-length setting rather than a handful of references.

Roku: the break with Sozin that leads to Aang’s war

Roku follows Kyoshi. In the animated canon, his defining historical relationship is his friendship with Prince Sozin and their eventual break. That rupture sets the political conditions for the Fire Nation’s expansion and the war that Aang must end a century later. The official timeline also lists The Reckoning of Roku as a story from this era.

Roku’s appearances in Avatar: The Last Airbender are therefore more than flashbacks. They connect the previous Avatar’s choices to Aang’s task and show how one succession can carry unresolved consequences into the next lifetime.

Aang: the 100-year war and the original animated series

Aang is discovered in an iceberg by Katara and Sokka. He must learn water, earth and fire after growing up as an airbender, master all four elements and end the Fire Nation’s 100-year war. His era is the complete three-book run of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The postwar comics continue Aang’s era after the animated finale. They address the consequences of the war and the transition into the political world that eventually becomes the setting for Korra. These comics are useful if you want continuity between the two shows, but the three animated books remain the essential screen story of Aang’s Avatar cycle.

Korra: the next televised Avatar era

Korra follows Aang and begins her story in Republic City. Her four-book series moves through several distinct crises rather than one continuous war:

  • Book One: the Equalist movement challenges bending-based power in Republic City.
  • Book Two: the Water Tribe civil war leads into Harmonic Convergence and a major change in the human–spirit relationship.
  • Book Three: a new Air Nation emerges while the Red Lotus threatens the political order.
  • Book Four: Kuvira’s Earth Empire creates the central conflict.

Subsequent comics continue Korra’s era after the television finale. They are part of the official timeline, but they do not insert another Avatar between Korra and the next announced screen protagonist.

What happens between Korra and Seven Havens?

There is no hidden Avatar between Korra and Pavi. Co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino directly addressed the theory: “Korra was the previous Avatar. There wasn’t a secret Avatar in between. I feel okay debunking that theory.” In the canonical succession, Pavi comes after Korra.

No current official description establishes the exact cause of the interval, gives a settled number of years, or publishes a complete in-universe calendar for the transition. Treat those details as unresolved rather than assigning a made-up date or inventing an intermediate Avatar. Future stories may explain the gap, but plot revelations should not be presented as current fact.

Seven Havens: Pavi’s era after Korra

Avatar: Seven Havens is the next screen era. Paramount+ describes Pavi as the Avatar after Korra. She is a young Earthbender in a world devastated by a cataclysm, where both human and spirit enemies regard the Avatar as humanity’s destroyer. The Seven Havens are civilization’s last strongholds.

The series premiered on Paramount+ on October 9, 2026. Book 1 has 13 episodes, and Paramount+ has confirmed Book 2 with 13 episodes. The service has also reported renewals for Books 3 and 4. Nickelodeon’s announcement describes the original order as 26 half-hour episodes divided into two 13-episode books and identifies Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko as co-creators and executive producers.

The title references the surviving havens, not a replacement for the Avatar cycle. Pavi remains the next Avatar after Korra. The available official description identifies Pavi and Nisha in connection with the Seven Havens era, but the successor status specifically confirmed in that description belongs to Pavi.

Best watch order for the screen stories

For a first-time viewer, release order gives the clearest buildup and avoids placing a flashback season inside the middle of another show. The chronological position of Wan is earlier, but his story is designed to be discovered through Korra’s second book.

  1. Avatar: The Last Airbender, Books One–Three: follow Aang’s discovery, training and end to the 100-year war.
  2. The Legend of Korra, Books One–Four: follow the next Avatar in Republic City and the conflicts that reshape the modern world.
  3. Return to The Legend of Korra Book Two, episodes 7–8: watch “Beginnings, Pt. 1” and “Beginnings, Pt. 2” for Wan’s origin if you prefer to place the first Avatar’s story after seeing the later cycle.
  4. Avatar: Seven Havens: continue to Pavi’s post-Korra era, beginning with Book 1.

If you prefer strict in-universe chronology, start with Wan, then move through the historical novels and comics, watch Aang, watch Korra and finish with Seven Havens. That approach includes optional material and is better for a rewatch than for a first introduction.

What is confirmed and what remains open

  • Confirmed: Wan is the first Avatar.
  • Confirmed: more than 90 Avatars lived between Wan and Yangchen.
  • Confirmed: the named succession is Yangchen, Kuruk, Kyoshi, Roku, Aang and Korra.
  • Confirmed: Pavi is the next Avatar after Korra in Seven Havens.
  • Confirmed: the creators have rejected a secret Avatar between Korra and Pavi.
  • Unresolved: the exact number of years between Korra’s era and Pavi’s era.
  • Unresolved: the cause of the cataclysm and the complete history of the Seven Havens before the series reveals it.

That distinction keeps the timeline useful without turning missing information into fan theory presented as canon. The safest current order is therefore Wan, the largely unnamed succession, Yangchen, Kuruk, Kyoshi, Roku, Aang, Korra and Pavi—with the Korra-to-Pavi interval treated as an open historical gap rather than an extra Avatar.
