To identify what a port can do, check its type, direction, and the specific device’s supported features.
What does “AV port” mean?
“AV” means audio-visual. An AV port is a device’s physical connection for audio, video, or both. The term does not identify one specific connector. The connector and the device determine what signals it supports.

Direction matters, too: an input receives a signal from another device, while an output sends a signal. For example, a television’s AV input is for receiving audio or video from an external source. A headphone jack is an audio output, not an AV input.
Which ports carry sound, picture, or both?

How to identify the right connection
- Find the source output. Check the console, computer, player, or camera for the connector that sends the signal.
- Find the destination input. Check the TV, monitor, or audio system for a compatible input. Match output to input; two connectors that look alike do not necessarily have the same role.
- Confirm what the connection carries. Establish whether you need audio, video, or both. For USB-C, consult the device’s documentation to see whether that particular port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and video output.
- Check the exact supported features. Compare the source, display, cable, and any adapter for the resolution, refresh behavior, audio, and other features you need. Port presence by itself does not guarantee a particular mode.
- Choose a cable or adapter only after checking compatibility. An HDMI cable is appropriate when both devices have compatible HDMI connections. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable requires video output from the source USB-C port. For older connector types, verify the adapter supports the required direction and modes.
Why a port’s shape is not enough
Some connector families have different capabilities depending on the device. USB-C is a good example: it can carry DisplayPort audio and video when the device supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, but not every USB-C port supports video. VESA describes DisplayPort over USB-C as enabling the USB Type-C connector and cable to support DisplayPort audio/video transport. Check the manufacturer’s specifications or manual rather than inferring capability from the connector’s appearance.

Adapters also need to match the source, display, and signal direction. Before connecting a computer to a monitor through an adapter, confirm that the computer’s output, adapter, and monitor support the display mode you want. DisplayPort standards change over time; VESA announced DisplayPort 2.1b in January 2025, but the standard’s announcement date alone does not establish what any particular device supports.

HDMI is a specific connection that commonly carries digital audio and video over one link. “AV” is a broader description for audio-visual connections and can refer to different connector types. For example, composite AV carries analog video and separate stereo audio, while an optical connection carries audio only. So if a device or instruction says “AV,” look for the exact port label or connector type before choosing a cable.
