Autonomous surface craft can put sensors on station for long periods without carrying people into the operating area, while a crewed patrol boat can patrol close to shore, escort vessels, cooperate with local forces and conduct visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) operations because its personnel are already aboard. Current Navy and DARPA examples are prototypes, demonstrations or experimentation programs—not one standardized, fully autonomous vessel class. The U.S. Navy Mark VI is a useful crewed reference, but its published fact file was last updated in 2018, so its specifications should not be treated as a current fleet-status report.
What “autonomous surface craft” means in this comparison
“Autonomous surface craft” is a broad category. The examples documented by the U.S. Navy and DARPA include medium unmanned surface vessel (MUSV) prototypes, a demonstrator designed never to carry people, and the Overlord prototype effort. They do not all have the same sensors, command architecture, endurance, payload or level of human supervision.

Uncrewed describes who is physically aboard. It does not mean that a vessel operates without people in the wider system. Operators may plan missions, supervise from shore or another ship, update rules of engagement, monitor health and intervene when communications or navigation conditions require it. “Autonomous” generally refers to the functions the vessel can perform on its own under defined conditions, such as route following, collision avoidance and compliance with the rules of the sea.

The platforms and what their programs actually establish
Sea Hunter and Seahawk: MUSV prototypes for sensing and experimentation
The Navy describes Sea Hunter and Seahawk as autonomous MUSV prototypes used for research and experimentation. Their stated roles include distributed sensing to extend a manned ship’s operational view, maritime-domain awareness and support for anti-submarine warfare. The Navy’s 2025 fact file gives approximate dimensions of 41 meters and a full-load displacement of 142.3 metric tons for these vessels.
Those figures apply to the named prototypes, not to every unmanned surface vessel. The fact file does not establish a universal speed, range, payload capacity or independent combat capability for the MUSV category. Their value in this comparison is as an example of an uncrewed platform intended to add sensing and persistence to a force that still includes manned ships.
USX-1 Defiant: a ship designed never to accommodate people
DARPA’s USX-1 Defiant was designed from the outset never to accommodate a human aboard. At its christening on August 11, 2025, DARPA described the vessel as 180 feet long and 240 metric tons lightship. It was completing final systems testing before an extended at-sea reliability and endurance demonstration.
That status is important. The christening description is a program update at a particular date, not a report of completed endurance results or an operational deployment. DARPA program manager Greg Avicola said: “Defiant is a tough little ship and defies the idea that we cannot make a ship that can operate in the challenging environment of the open ocean without people to operate her.” The quotation expresses the program’s ambition; it is not independent evidence that the vessel has already completed a fleet mission.
Overlord: prototypes intended to inform future fleet integration
The Overlord program is intended to inform future unmanned surface vessel development and fleet integration through prototypes, concepts of operation and tactics development. Its descriptions emphasize high endurance and reconfigurable designs. Those characteristics make Overlord relevant to questions about future force structure, but they should not be read as proof of mature, fielded combat capability.
A Department of Defense account also reports that a Ghost Fleet Overlord vessel traveled more than 4,700 nautical miles, almost entirely autonomously. In that account, practical autonomy included collision avoidance and following the rules of the sea. The publication year was not exposed in the available record, so the voyage is best treated as a historical demonstration rather than a year-specific performance claim. It also does not show that every autonomous craft can conduct every patrol mission independently.
Mark VI: a crewed littoral patrol reference
The Navy’s Mark VI fact file describes a patrol boat for persistent littoral patrol and force protection. Its listed tasks include escort, boarding and theater-security-cooperation missions. The same fact file lists two five-person crews, an eight-person VBSS team, more than 600 nautical miles of range, a cruise speed above 25 knots and a sprint speed above 35 knots.

The personnel count can be easy to misread: two five-person crews equal ten crew members, and the eight-person VBSS team brings the listed embarked complement to 18. The 2018 update date matters. These are published specifications and roles from an older fact file, not a current statement about procurement, availability or the status of every Mark VI boat.
Mission fit: open-ocean sensing versus close-in control
Where autonomous craft have a natural advantage
An uncrewed vessel can be sent into a surveillance pattern without exposing a boat crew to fatigue, weather or a potentially hostile boarding. That makes persistent sensing and wide-area maritime awareness logical starting points. A network of craft can distribute sensors, report contacts and extend the area observed by a manned ship. The Navy’s MUSV descriptions specifically connect this distributed-sensing role with maritime-domain awareness and anti-submarine warfare.
Open-ocean operations also reward endurance and predictable station keeping. Defiant’s design goal—never accommodating a person—allows its architecture to be optimized around machinery, sensors, fuel, communications and safety systems rather than berthing, life support and escape arrangements. The tradeoff is that the vessel must handle faults, degraded communications and ambiguous contacts without a person physically present.
Where a crewed patrol boat remains stronger
A littoral patrol is not only a navigation problem. It may require hailing a vessel, interpreting behavior, escorting traffic, protecting a force, working with local authorities or sending a trained team across another vessel’s rail. The Mark VI’s stated mission and VBSS complement put those human decisions and actions on board.
Recommended Free Tools
People aboard can adapt their questioning, identify unusual circumstances and make immediate judgments that are difficult to encode in advance. They can also perform tasks that require hands, tools and legal authority at the point of contact. A crewed boat carries the cost and risk of supporting those people, but it does not need a separate boarding platform for every interaction.
Capabilities and tradeoffs at a glance
| Comparison axis | Autonomous examples in the cited programs | Mark VI crewed reference | How to interpret the difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary mission | Distributed sensing, autonomy experimentation and future fleet integration | Littoral patrol, force protection, escort, boarding and theater security cooperation | The mission sets overlap only partly; a sensing demonstrator is not a substitute for a boarding boat. |
| People aboard | Defiant was designed never to accommodate a person; Sea Hunter and Seahawk are described as unmanned prototypes | Two five-person crews plus an eight-person VBSS team, 18 people in the listed composition | Uncrewed means no one aboard, not no human supervision or support. |
| Range and endurance | Sources describe long-duration autonomy and an Overlord transit of more than 4,700 nautical miles, but do not provide one common range figure for all examples | More than 600 nautical miles in the Navy fact file | The figures were not measured under a common load, speed, sea state or mission profile. |
| Speed | No directly comparable speed figure is stated in the cited MUSV or DARPA material | Above 25 knots cruise and above 35 knots sprint | There is no defensible autonomous-versus-crewed speed ranking from these sources. |
| Payload and flexibility | Navy material describes distributed sensors and potential future payloads; Overlord descriptions emphasize reconfigurability | Reconfigurable mission spaces and support for embarked teams and unmanned systems | Both can be adapted, but the available material does not establish payload equivalence. |
| Integration | Designed to extend manned ships’ view and inform future fleet concepts and tactics | Provides an onboard crew and teams that can act directly in the littorals | Autonomous craft are generally force multipliers in these examples, not complete replacements for manned units. |
| Maturity | Prototype, testing, experimentation or demonstration status | A named patrol-boat program with published mission and performance specifications | Do not infer current procurement or availability from an older fact file. |
| Cost, reliability, survivability and effectiveness | Not quantified in the cited sources | Not quantified in the cited sources | No numerical lifecycle or mission-effectiveness comparison is supported. |
Crew, supervision and the human-factors tradeoff
What disappears when the crew leaves the boat
- Berthing, food, sanitation and many routine life-support requirements can be removed or reduced.
- The crew is not exposed to collision, weather, machinery hazards or a deliberate attack at the point where the craft is operating.
- More internal volume can be assigned to fuel, machinery, communications, sensors or mission equipment.
These are design opportunities, not guaranteed savings. An autonomous vessel still needs maintenance personnel, launch and recovery arrangements, software support, communications infrastructure and a command chain. A remote operator may be responsible for several craft, which changes workload rather than eliminating it.
What the crewed boat provides immediately
- Navigation and engineering watchstanders who can diagnose conditions as they develop.
- People able to communicate face-to-face, interpret a vessel’s intent and de-escalate an encounter.
- An embarked VBSS team for boarding and search tasks.
- Local judgment when rules, safety concerns or mission priorities conflict.
The Mark VI’s 18-person listed complement is therefore not just a staffing cost. It is part of the boat’s operational payload. Removing those people would remove capabilities unless another platform or team supplied them.

Range, endurance and speed: avoid false equivalence
The available numbers are not a controlled comparison. The Mark VI fact file states more than 600 nautical miles of range, with cruise above 25 knots and sprint above 35 knots. The autonomous sources instead emphasize endurance, long-duration operation or a particular demonstration. A vessel’s usable range changes with speed, fuel reserve, payload, sea state, weather and the need to return to a support location.

The Overlord voyage exceeding 4,700 nautical miles shows that at least one vessel completed a very long transit almost entirely autonomously. It does not establish the patrol radius of every Overlord configuration, nor does it say that the transit carried the same payload, maintained the same speed or faced the same conditions as a Mark VI mission.
For planning, compare a complete mission profile rather than a headline number: time on station, transit distance, speed during contact, reserve fuel, communications availability, maintenance intervals and the recovery plan. If a source does not state one of those variables, mark it as unknown rather than filling the gap with an estimate.
Payloads, reconfiguration and force integration
Sea Hunter and Seahawk are described as distributed sensor nodes that extend a manned ship’s operational view. Their usefulness depends on the quality of the sensor data, timing, communications and the ability of a command team to combine reports from multiple platforms. A craft that detects more contacts but cannot deliver trusted data to the fleet may add little operational value.
Overlord’s reconfigurable emphasis points toward changing payloads and concepts of operation. One configuration might support sensing while another tests communications, decoys or other mission equipment. The cited material does not provide a payload mass, power budget or list of interchangeable modules, so no direct payload comparison with Mark VI is justified.

Its flexibility is therefore human as well as mechanical: the same boat can carry personnel for a security-cooperation visit, a boarding team or another assigned task. Autonomous craft can complement that flexibility by scouting ahead, extending a patrol line or maintaining a sensor presence while the crewed boat handles contact.
Navigation autonomy is not mission autonomy
The practical definition in the Defense Department’s Overlord account—collision avoidance and following the rules of the sea—describes important navigation functions. It does not mean a vessel can independently decide every mission question. Detecting a contact, classifying it, determining whether behavior is threatening, selecting a lawful response and coordinating with other forces involve different levels of automation and human authority.

Mission planners should separate at least four layers:
- Vehicle control: keeping the craft stable, powered and on its route.
- Navigation: avoiding hazards and complying with maritime rules.
- Perception: detecting and identifying vessels, objects and environmental changes.
- Mission judgment: deciding what to investigate, challenge, escort, report or leave alone.
A demonstration of the first two layers, even over thousands of nautical miles, does not prove that the latter two can be delegated safely in every environment. Communications loss, sensor disagreement, fishing traffic, narrow channels and ambiguous encounters all require predefined behaviors and a clear handoff to human operators when the system reaches the limits of its authorization.
Safety, survivability and support burden
Uncrewed operation changes risk; it does not remove it. A craft without people aboard avoids putting a crew in danger, but a collision can still damage equipment, block a channel or create a recovery problem. Cybersecurity, spoofed navigation signals, lost communications and sensor failures can affect both the vessel and the wider force.
A crewed boat exposes personnel to the operating environment but also brings onboard troubleshooting and damage control. The right comparison is not “safe autonomous” versus “unsafe crewed.” It is whether the mission’s hazards are better managed by keeping people ashore, placing trained people at the point of contact, or using both types of platform together.
Support planning must include launch or deployment, fueling, maintenance, software updates, spare parts, remote control stations, communications coverage and recovery after a fault. An autonomous craft that requires frequent specialized servicing may deliver less persistence than its fuel capacity suggests. The cited sources provide no common reliability, survivability or sustainment rates, so those factors must be tested in the specific program rather than inferred from vessel size.
How mature are the capabilities?
- Sea Hunter and Seahawk: Navy-described autonomous MUSV prototypes for research and experimentation.
- USX-1 Defiant: a DARPA demonstrator undergoing final systems testing before an extended reliability and endurance demonstration as of August 11, 2025.
- Overlord: a prototype effort intended to inform future development, concepts of operation, tactics and fleet integration.
- Mark VI: a named patrol-boat program with a Navy fact file last updated January 12, 2018.
This maturity distinction prevents a common analytical error: treating a successful autonomous transit or a prototype’s dimensions as evidence of a ready-for-everything replacement for a patrol crew. Demonstrations answer selected engineering questions. Operational fielding also requires doctrine, training, certification, maintenance, communications, legal authorities and a repeatable support model.
Cost and effectiveness: what cannot be concluded
The cited official material does not provide a controlled comparison of acquisition cost, lifecycle cost, reliability, survivability or mission effectiveness. It would be misleading to claim that autonomous craft are automatically cheaper because they carry no crew. Savings in berthing and personnel may be offset by sensors, redundant control systems, shore infrastructure, software assurance, satellite or radio links, test programs and specialized maintenance.
Best Value
Likewise, a crewed boat’s larger personnel requirement does not by itself prove lower effectiveness. The Mark VI’s crew and VBSS team perform tasks that an autonomous sensor platform is not designed to perform. Effectiveness should be measured against a defined mission: hours of useful surveillance, contacts correctly reported, response time to a boarding request, successful escort, or another agreed outcome.
A practical decision framework
- Define the task. Decide whether the primary requirement is sensing, patrol, escort, force protection, boarding, security cooperation or a combination.
- Map the environment. Identify open ocean, congested littorals, narrow channels, weather, traffic density, communications coverage and likely interference.
- Set the human-contact requirement. If personnel must board, negotiate, inspect or provide immediate assistance, retain a crewed platform or provide a separate embarked team.
- Specify autonomy boundaries. Document which vehicle, navigation, perception and mission decisions may be automated, and when a remote operator must approve or take control.
- Calculate the complete support chain. Include operators, maintenance, launch and recovery, fuel, data links, cybersecurity, spares and fault response—not only the vessel.
- Compare mission-level outputs. Use common measures such as time on station, response time, sensor coverage, boarding availability and recovery time after failures.
- Plan a mixed force where appropriate. An autonomous sensor craft can extend a manned ship’s awareness while the crewed patrol boat handles contact, escort and boarding tasks.
Examples of sensible tasking
Wide-area maritime awareness
Deploying autonomous MUSV-type craft as distributed sensors can increase the area watched by a manned ship. The manned ship remains responsible for interpreting reports and deciding what response is authorized.
Persistent littoral patrol
A Mark VI-type boat is better aligned with a patrol that includes frequent communications with local vessels, escort decisions and the possibility of boarding. An autonomous craft could scout approaches or maintain an additional watch, but it would not replace the embarked VBSS capability.

The Overlord transit and Defiant’s planned endurance demonstration address whether an uncrewed vessel can remain underway and navigate for extended periods. They should be evaluated for the conditions and payloads actually tested, not generalized to every mission.
Mixed operations
A combined package can assign autonomous craft to expose fewer people to routine or hazardous sensing while a crewed patrol boat stays available for human interaction. The value comes from dividing tasks according to each platform’s strengths, with communications and command procedures tested as rigorously as the hulls.
Bottom line for planners
Autonomous surface craft are best understood here as specialized, evolving tools for persistence, distributed sensing and autonomy experimentation. Crewed patrol boats remain the more direct solution when a mission depends on people aboard for judgment, escort, security cooperation or VBSS. Sea Hunter, Seahawk, Defiant and Overlord demonstrate different steps toward uncrewed naval operations; they do not establish one universal autonomous replacement for the Mark VI. Choose by mission, environment, human-contact requirement and verified maturity, and treat unsupported cost, reliability and effectiveness claims as unknown.
