ADAS projects add perception and driver-assistance controls; telematics projects connect vehicle data to positioning, wireless networks, back-end services, and user applications.
The practical distinction matters. ADAS assists a driver through warnings or limited steering and braking interventions. It is not the same as an autonomous-driving system, which requires a separate safety case, operational-design-domain definition, validation program, and regulatory analysis.

UNECE reported in 2020 that vehicles could contain up to 150 electronic control units and about 100 million lines of software code. It projected software volume could reach 300 million lines by 2030. Those are dated UNECE figures, not a universal count for every vehicle today, but they illustrate why architecture, configuration control, and traceability are central engineering concerns.
Embedded software and controls

ADAS and autonomous driving are different engineering problems
Advanced driver-assistance systems are designed to support a human driver. NHTSA describes advanced vehicle safety technologies as depending on “an array of electronics, sensors, and computing power.” Its automation descriptions include momentary warnings or interventions at Level 0 and continuous assistance with either steering or acceleration and braking at Level 1, while the driver remains engaged. Functions described as Level 1 or Level 2 should therefore not be presented as self-driving.
NHTSA also states: “At this time, even the highest level of driving automation available to consumers requires the full engagement and undivided attention of drivers.” A service provider should reflect that responsibility in the human-machine interface, driver-monitoring strategy, safety analysis, owner documentation, and validation plan.

- Driver interaction: design displays, sounds, haptics, driver monitoring, status indications, and takeover requests.
- Calibration: tune thresholds and parameters for vehicle variants, tires, sensors, weather, roads, and manufacturing tolerances.
- Verification and validation: exercise nominal, edge, fault, and misuse scenarios in simulation, laboratories, controlled tracks, and public-road programs.
What vehicle telematics engineering covers
Telematics connects the vehicle to people, fleet operators, emergency services, and cloud systems. A complete scope follows the data from the vehicle to the user and back again, rather than treating a cellular modem or mobile app as the whole product.
The end-to-end telematics path
- In-vehicle acquisition: read approved signals from ECUs, sensors, gateways, and diagnostic interfaces. Define sampling rates, timestamps, units, event triggers, and data quality rules.
- Positioning: combine satellite positioning and vehicle signals as required by the use case, while handling tunnels, urban canyons, weak signals, and stale locations.
- Communications: select cellular or other wireless connectivity for the target regions, manage provisioning and roaming, and design buffering for coverage loss.
- Backend ingestion: authenticate devices, validate payloads, normalize data, store it appropriately, and expose operational monitoring.
- APIs and applications: deliver fleet dashboards, consumer applications, partner integrations, alerts, reports, and command paths with clear latency and availability targets.
- Diagnostics and operations: monitor device health, investigate faults, support remote configuration, and plan controlled software updates.
- Governance: define data ownership, retention, access rights, privacy controls, cybersecurity responsibilities, and deletion or decommissioning procedures.
Typical use cases
Fleet programs may use telematics for utilization measurement, maintenance alerts, driver-safety analytics, route monitoring, and incident reconstruction. Consumer services may provide remote vehicle status, emergency assistance, navigation, and other connected features. Each use case changes the required latency, availability, location accuracy, security, and evidence of consent.

UNECE frames intelligent transport systems around automated and connected vehicles, vehicle regulation, road safety, and compliance verification. That framing means a telematics architecture should be reviewed not only as an IT system, but also as part of the vehicle’s safety, regulatory, and service lifecycle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Standards and regulations that shape the work
Standards do not automatically certify a product. They define processes, analyses, and work products that must be applied to the vehicle, function, suppliers, and target markets.
| Reference | What it addresses | What to verify with a provider |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 26262-7:2018 | Production, operation, service, and decommissioning of safety-related road-vehicle E/E systems, including planning activities and work products | Lifecycle capability, hazard analysis, safety goals, ASIL activities, traceability, production controls, service processes, and evidence quality |
| ISO/SAE 21434:2021 | Cybersecurity risk management engineering for road-vehicle E/E systems | Item definition, threat analysis and risk assessment, security goals, cybersecurity concept, supplier interfaces, verification, incident response, and post-production monitoring |
| UNECE UN Regulation No. 171 | Driver-control assistance | Whether the intended function and vehicle category fall within its approval requirements |
| UNECE UN Regulation No. 157 | Automated lane keeping | Operational limits, approval route, validation evidence, and market applicability |
| UNECE UN Regulations Nos. 131 and 152 | Advanced emergency braking | Function-specific tests, documentation, and vehicle-category requirements |
| UNECE UN Regulation No. 155 | Vehicle cybersecurity | Cybersecurity management, risk controls, monitoring, vulnerability handling, and approval readiness |
| UNECE UN Regulation No. 156 | Software updates | Update governance, authorization, records, rollback or recovery planning, and post-update verification |
ISO 26262 does not address nominal performance, so a supplier needs complementary performance-validation methods. ISO/SAE 21434 complements functional-safety work and supports compliance with UNECE cybersecurity and software-update regulations, but neither standard by itself proves regulatory approval. UNECE requirements vary with contracting-party market, vehicle category, function, and approval route.
How a typical engineering engagement is delivered
- Define the item and use case. Document the vehicle function, users, operating conditions, interfaces, target markets, expected service life, and ownership of decisions.
- Set architecture and boundaries. Allocate functions across sensors, ECUs, networks, gateways, cloud services, and applications. Record assumptions about suppliers and inherited components.
- Analyze safety and security. Perform hazard analysis and risk assessment for safety-related functions, then threat analysis and risk assessment for cybersecurity. Derive safety goals, security goals, and technical concepts.
- Build and integrate. Implement software, calibrations, communications, diagnostics, APIs, and human-machine interfaces while maintaining requirements traceability.
- Verify progressively. Start with unit and integration tests, continue through software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop, then add controlled-track and on-road validation. Include nominal, boundary, fault, degraded, and misuse scenarios.
- Prepare release evidence. Assemble test results, unresolved-risk decisions, supplier records, configuration baselines, regulatory documents, service instructions, and update procedures.
- Operate and improve. Monitor field behavior, security events, incidents, diagnostics, and software performance. Feed lessons into corrective actions, updates, recalls where necessary, and eventual decommissioning.
How to choose an ADAS or telematics engineering partner
Compare providers on evidence and lifecycle capability rather than on a feature list or a claim that they are “ISO compliant.” Ask for current standards editions, named deliverables, representative validation evidence, and a clear division of responsibility between supplier, OEM, fleet operator, and cloud provider.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Safety assurance | Can the team show hazard analysis, safety goals, ASIL work, traceability, independent reviews, and production or service controls? |
| Cybersecurity | How are threats identified, security goals derived, suppliers coordinated, vulnerabilities handled, incidents reported, and post-production monitoring performed? |
| ADAS or automation scope | Which sensor modalities, fusion methods, perception functions, control functions, driver monitoring, operational-design-domain analyses, and validation environments are actually supported? |
| Telematics architecture | Which vehicle interfaces, connectivity regions, cloud environments, APIs, latency targets, data-ownership rules, and fleet-management integrations are supported? |
| Verification and validation | What simulation, software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, proving-ground, on-road, scenario-coverage, and independent-assessment evidence is available? |
| Regulatory geography | Can the provider produce approval documentation for every intended market and explain differences between contracting-party requirements? |
| Lifecycle support | Who owns production release, field monitoring, incident response, OTA governance, service diagnostics, updates, and decommissioning? |
| Delivery model | How does the team coordinate suppliers, qualify tools, control configuration, document decisions, and transfer knowledge to the OEM or fleet team? |
Common mistakes and how to prevent them
- Calling assistance self-driving: keep marketing, manuals, driver alerts, and validation claims aligned with the actual automation level and driver responsibility.
- Treating one standard as a certificate: ISO 26262 does not establish nominal performance, cybersecurity, or regulatory approval; build the complementary evidence explicitly.
- Stopping at the vehicle gateway: telematics risk continues through wireless links, cloud services, APIs, applications, operators, and data-retention processes.
- Testing only the happy path: include blocked sensors, conflicting measurements, timing faults, communication loss, degraded actuators, unusual road layouts, weather, misuse, and recovery behavior.
- Ignoring post-production work: require vulnerability handling, incident response, software-update governance, monitoring, service diagnostics, and decommissioning plans before launch.
- Leaving market scope until the end: identify vehicle categories, functions, contracting parties, and approval routes at project definition so architecture and evidence meet the intended geography.
Bottom line
The strongest automotive engineering partner can connect systems architecture, embedded software, ADAS perception and control, telematics data paths, functional safety, cybersecurity, validation, regulatory documentation, and post-production operations. Select the team that can demonstrate those work products for your exact vehicle function and market—not merely one that lists familiar standards or promises an autonomous-driving result.
