Automattic’s latest reported interim CFO was Jeremy Klaperman, appointed on September 18, 2026, after Mark Davies left the role. The available reporting does not confirm that Klaperman later departed, so the claim in the original headline remains unverified.

What is confirmed about Automattic’s interim CFO?

TechCrunch reported on September 18, 2026, that Jeremy Klaperman had become Automattic’s interim chief financial officer after Davies’s departure. Klaperman was CFO of Automattic’s WordPress VIP enterprise business and had previously served as Automattic CFO while Davies was on sabbatical.

At the time of that report, the board was evaluating internal and external candidates for the permanent CFO position. The report establishes Klaperman’s appointment, but not how long he held the interim role or whether he subsequently left. CFO.com also covered the appointment on September 21, attributing its details to TechCrunch; that is corroborative coverage, not a separate company announcement.

Did Jeremy Klaperman leave Automattic?

The reports cited here do not establish that he did. They document his appointment, but provide no dated confirmation of a later departure. That distinction matters: Davies’s departure was reported, while Klaperman’s alleged exit is not verified by the available coverage. Without a source confirming the later event, it would be premature to state that Automattic has lost its interim CFO.

How the leadership upheaval unfolded

  • September 9, 2026: Automattic’s board placed CEO Matt Mullenweg on leave and named then-CFO Mark Davies interim CEO, according to TechCrunch’s account of the company’s confirmation.
  • About 33 hours later: Mullenweg returned as CEO, TechCrunch reported on September 12.
  • By September 14: TechCrunch reported that directors involved in the leave vote had departed or resigned, and that Davies and Chief Legal Officer Andy Missan had also left. The board had not publicly explained the reason for its vote.
  • September 18: TechCrunch reported Klaperman’s appointment as interim CFO, with the permanent appointment still to be decided.
  • September 25: TechCrunch reported that Automattic had a new board after the failed leave vote. That update adds context to the boardroom upheaval but does not confirm a later Klaperman departure.

What is known about the board’s vote?

The reporting reviewed did not publicly explain why the board voted to place Mullenweg on leave. Mullenweg accused Davies and directors of conspiring against him; that is his allegation, not an established finding. The reported departures and leadership changes show a serious governance conflict, but do not by themselves establish its motive.

In a Slack post described by TechCrunch on September 18, Mullenweg said, “I have 100% confidence in our cash and financial position.” This is his assurance, not independently audited evidence about Automattic’s finances.
