A Windows screen that says Preparing Automatic Repair, Diagnosing your PC, or Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC means Windows has entered its recovery environment after a startup failure. The blue screen is a recovery state, not a diagnosis by itself. The most useful clues are the displayed STOP code, any named driver or module, the point at which startup stops, and whether Safe Mode can load.
Work from the least-destructive option to the most disruptive: record the error, run Startup Repair, use System Restore if a recent change triggered the loop, test Safe Mode, then use carefully targeted recovery tools. Protect important files before considering Reset this PC or a reinstall, especially if the storage drive may be failing or BitLocker asks for a recovery key.

What the Automatic Repair blue screen means
Microsoft describes a blue-screen error as a bug check or STOP error. It appears when a serious problem causes Windows to shut down or restart unexpectedly to protect against data loss. Automatic Repair is Windows’ response to a startup failure: it launches the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and offers tools intended to make the installation bootable again.

Photograph the full screen before selecting anything. Record the STOP code and a named file such as a driver or kernel module. Also note whether the machine reaches the Windows logo, restarts immediately, or reaches the sign-in screen before failing. Those details help distinguish startup-file damage, a recent software change, and hardware trouble.
Why Windows keeps entering Automatic Repair
Several different failures can produce the same recovery screen. Treat the screen as a starting point for diagnosis rather than as evidence of one universal cause.
Missing or corrupted startup files
Windows needs a set of boot files before it can load the operating system. If those files are missing or damaged, the computer may repeatedly return to WinRE. An interrupted update, an abrupt shutdown, or file-system corruption can leave startup files inconsistent.
Damaged Boot Configuration Data
The Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store tells Windows which installation to start and how to start it. A damaged or incorrect BCD entry can create a restart loop even when much of the Windows installation is intact. Boot-related tools in WinRE are designed for this class of problem.
Corrupted Windows system files
Windows may fail after the boot manager has started if core system files are missing or corrupted. In that case, Startup Repair may not be sufficient, and System Restore or offline repair from Command Prompt may be needed.

A recent driver, application, or update
If the loop began immediately after installing a device driver, application, or Windows update, reversing that change is often more appropriate than rebuilding boot data. The timing is important evidence: a problem that starts after a specific change should be handled differently from one that appears after months of normal startup.
Storage or other hardware faults
A failing SSD, hard drive, memory module, motherboard, or power component can cause repeated crashes and unreadable files. Automatic Repair cannot turn failing hardware into reliable hardware. Repeated write attempts can also increase the risk to data on a deteriorating drive, so stop troubleshooting and prioritize backup or professional recovery when the files are critical.

- Capture evidence. Photograph the STOP code, named module, and exact message. Note whether the machine says Preparing Automatic Repair, Diagnosing your PC, or that repair could not be completed.
- Disconnect only nonessential accessories. Remove external drives, docks, and newly attached devices so they cannot complicate startup. Leave the keyboard, display, and any input device needed to navigate WinRE connected.
- Locate your BitLocker recovery key. An encrypted Windows volume may require the key before recovery tools can access it. Do not guess at recovery commands when WinRE is asking for that key.
- Decide how valuable the data is. If the drive is making unusual noises, disappearing intermittently, or producing repeated read errors, minimize further attempts and seek data recovery help. Repairs are secondary to preserving irreplaceable files.
Use the safest recovery sequence first
1. Run Startup Repair
From the recovery screen choose Advanced options, then Troubleshoot, Advanced options, and Startup Repair. Select the Windows installation when prompted and provide the BitLocker recovery key if requested.
Microsoft explains that when Startup Repair determines the cause, it tries to fix the issue automatically. Let the process finish without powering off the computer. If it reports that it could not repair the PC, return to Advanced options rather than repeatedly launching the same tool; the next step should be based on what changed and what evidence you recorded.
2. Use System Restore when a recent change fits the timing
Choose Advanced options > System Restore. Select a restore point created before the driver, application, or update that coincided with the first failed boot. System Restore rolls back system files and settings while leaving personal files unchanged, according to Microsoft’s recovery guidance.

3. Test Startup Settings and Safe Mode
Open Advanced options > Startup Settings, select Restart, and choose a Safe Mode option from the numbered menu. Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers and services, making it an isolation test.
If Safe Mode starts, remove or roll back the driver, update, or startup software installed immediately before the loop. Use the normal Windows settings or the application’s uninstaller, restart normally, and check whether the failure returns. Safe Mode is not a permanent repair; it is evidence that a basic Windows environment can start and that a third-party component may be involved.
If Safe Mode also fails, do not keep uninstalling unrelated software. Return to WinRE and continue with boot or system-file recovery.
4. Use Command Prompt only after identifying the Windows volume
Choose Advanced options > Command Prompt for targeted boot troubleshooting. Drive letters in WinRE can differ from the letters you see during a normal Windows session, so first identify the volume that actually contains the Windows directory. Running a boot command against the wrong volume can leave the real installation untouched or make diagnosis harder.

Microsoft documents Bootrec and related startup commands for repairing boot records, scanning for Windows installations, and rebuilding boot configuration. Use the command sequence that matches your recorded symptom and the installation you identified; do not copy a generic sequence blindly. If the volume is BitLocker-protected, stop when WinRE requests the recovery key. When commands report that the disk or volume cannot be read, treat that as a possible storage fault rather than repeating writes.
5. Start recovery from Windows installation media
If the internal recovery environment will not load, create or use Windows installation media on a USB flash drive from another working computer. Boot the affected PC from that media, select the language and keyboard options, then choose Repair your computer instead of beginning a new installation. Navigate to Troubleshoot and Advanced options to reach Startup Repair, System Restore, Startup Settings, and Command Prompt.
The USB drive provides access to the recovery tools; it does not itself repair Windows, and no particular drive capacity is universally required by the recovery process. The computer may need its boot menu or firmware settings adjusted to start from USB. If the internal drive is not detected at all, installation media cannot overcome a physical connection or drive failure.
6. Use Reset this PC or reinstall only after protecting data
Reset this PC and installation-media reinstallation are later options when repair tools cannot restore a bootable system. They can remove applications, settings, and—depending on the option selected—personal data. Copy important files first if the drive is readable, or use professional recovery if it is unstable.
A manufacturer recovery image may include device-specific drivers and factory applications. That can be useful on a system with special hardware, but it also returns the computer toward its factory state rather than preserving the current software configuration. Record your BitLocker key, application installers, and any license information before taking this route.

How the recovery choices differ
| Option | Personal files | Reverses a recent change | Main target | External media or key | Impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Startup Repair | Designed to preserve them | No; it targets startup automatically | Startup problems detected by WinRE | May require BitLocker key; no media if WinRE loads | Low |
| System Restore | Leaves personal files unchanged | Yes, by returning system files and settings to an earlier point | Recent driver, application, update, or configuration change | May require BitLocker key; no media if WinRE loads | Low to moderate |
| Safe Mode | Preserves them | Only after you remove or roll back the suspected change | Diagnostic isolation of drivers and startup software | May require BitLocker key | Low |
| Command Prompt and Bootrec | Usually preserves them when correctly targeted | Can repair boot metadata rather than undoing an app change | Boot records, BCD, and related startup configuration | Correct Windows volume and possibly BitLocker key; media may be needed | Moderate if misapplied |
| Installation-media WinRE | Depends on the tool chosen | Provides access to the same lower-impact tools | Recovery when internal WinRE will not start | USB installation media; BitLocker key may be required | Varies |
| Reset or reinstall | May remove apps, settings, or files | Replaces the existing software state | Unrecoverable software corruption or a clean starting point | Installation media or manufacturer recovery may be needed | High |
Use the STOP code to choose the next branch
When the code names a driver
Write down the exact filename and check whether the failure began after a driver installation or update. If Safe Mode works, roll back or uninstall that driver. If Safe Mode does not work, use System Restore when an appropriate restore point exists, then reassess before attempting broader repairs.
When the failure starts before the Windows logo
Prioritize Startup Repair, boot-configuration troubleshooting, and verification that the Windows volume is visible in WinRE. A failure this early is less likely to be fixed by removing an ordinary desktop application.
When Windows starts but crashes repeatedly
Safe Mode is particularly useful because it can show whether a nonessential driver or startup service is involved. If every mode crashes and the drive reports read errors, treat hardware as a serious possibility and protect data before further writes.

When repair tools cannot see the installation
Recheck the drive letter and storage visibility in WinRE. If the Windows volume remains absent or unreadable, do not rebuild boot data against a different volume. A storage-controller, connection, encryption, or physical-drive problem may need manufacturer or professional support.
When to stop troubleshooting
- The drive is clicking, disappearing, or returning repeated read errors.
- Important files have not been backed up and the repair process would write extensively to the disk.
- BitLocker is requesting a recovery key that you cannot provide.
- Startup Repair, System Restore, Safe Mode, and correctly targeted boot troubleshooting all fail.
- The STOP code changes unpredictably across restarts, suggesting an underlying hardware problem rather than one stable configuration error.
At that point, preserve the machine’s current state, document the STOP code and every change already attempted, and use the device manufacturer or a qualified data-recovery or repair professional. A blue screen identifies a serious failure condition, but only the surrounding evidence determines whether the practical fix is a rollback, boot repair, replacement hardware, reset, or reinstall.
