Choose AutoCAD LT if your work is precision 2D drafting, editing, annotation, and documentation. Choose full AutoCAD when you need 3D modeling or visualization, one of Autodesk’s specialized industry toolsets, or the broader API and automation set that is not included in LT. Both products handle substantial 2D production work, and LT still supports selected AutoLISP customization.
The practical decision is based on the drawings and workflows you must deliver—not your job title. A designer who works entirely in 2D may be well served by LT, while a 2D drafter who must use a particular electrical toolset or full-version API will need AutoCAD.

What AutoCAD LT is designed to do
Precision 2D production
LT is built for the daily work of producing and maintaining 2D drawings: creating geometry, modifying existing plans, adding dimensions and notes, and preparing documentation. If your deliverables are floor plans, fabrication details, schematics, site drawings, or other documents that remain two-dimensional, LT covers the central drafting task rather than serving as a trial edition.
That focus can make the choice straightforward for a small team with a stable 2D standard. You pay for the capabilities your files and procedures actually use, while retaining a professional drafting environment. The absence of full AutoCAD’s 3D and specialist additions does not prevent LT from handling substantial production drawing work.
Annotation and documentation workflows
Documentation is part of LT’s stated purpose, not an afterthought. Teams that spend most of their time revising details, placing dimensions, coordinating notes, and issuing drawing sets should evaluate whether any required operation falls outside the 2D feature set. If it does not, the lower subscription price may be the more rational fit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSelected customization through AutoLISP
LT is not automation-free. Autodesk lists AutoLISP support for LT, so existing or planned AutoLISP routines may work there. Before standardizing on LT, test the specific routines you depend on and check the release and platform requirements. A routine that calls a full-version API or expects an unavailable development environment is a different requirement from basic AutoLISP customization.
What full AutoCAD adds
3D drafting, modeling, and visualization
Full AutoCAD adds the 3D side of the product. Autodesk’s comparison assigns three-dimensional drafting, drawing, and modeling tools to AutoCAD and lists 3D graphics rotation and panning and advanced geometric views among its additional features. Those capabilities matter when you create or edit 3D geometry, inspect a design from multiple spatial views, or need visualization as part of the design process.
Can AutoCAD LT do 3D? LT is positioned as a precision 2D product, while Autodesk’s comparison lists the 3D creation and viewing capabilities with full AutoCAD. If a project requires genuine 3D modeling, 3D editing, or the listed 3D visualization features, select full AutoCAD rather than assuming a 2D-only subscription will grow into that work.

Seven specialized toolsets
Full AutoCAD includes seven specialized toolsets that Autodesk identifies by industry:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Architecture
- Mechanical
- Map 3D
- MEP
- Plant 3D
- Electrical
- Raster Design
These are not simply collections of generic commands. They are the deciding factor when a workflow depends on discipline-specific objects, libraries, or processes supplied by one of those toolsets. Autodesk’s LT purchase information says the toolsets are not included in LT. If a project standard names one of them, budget for full AutoCAD even if most of your other work is 2D.
Broader APIs and automation
Full AutoCAD provides more than the AutoLISP customization available in LT. Autodesk’s comparison includes ObjectARX, managed .NET libraries, the Visual LISP integrated development environment, Visual Basic applications, and macros among the full-version features. These options can be important for firms that maintain internal add-ins, automate repetitive production steps, connect CAD data to other systems, or need a particular development framework.
Do not decide this category from the word automation alone. Identify the exact technology your scripts or add-ins use. A team whose routines are limited to supported AutoLISP may be comfortable with LT; a team whose workflow depends on ObjectARX or managed .NET libraries has a full AutoCAD requirement. Confirm the operating platform and release as well, because an API can be present in a product comparison yet still require a specific environment.
2D drafting: is AutoCAD LT enough?
For a genuinely 2D workflow, LT is usually the sensible starting point. Autodesk describes it as focused on precision 2D drafting and documentation, and the product is intended for creating, editing, annotating, and documenting drawings. The key test is whether your work stops at 2D and whether your standards rely on a specialized toolset or a full-version API.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use this 2D suitability test:
- List the drawing types your team issues during a normal month.
- Mark which tasks create or modify only 2D geometry and documentation.
- Check every template, script, plug-in, and handoff for a named industry toolset or API dependency.
- Ask whether anyone must create, inspect, or present 3D geometry.
- Run a representative project through the intended LT workflow before moving every seat.
If all required work remains 2D and the dependency check finds only supported LT functions, LT meets the stated need. If one critical deliverable requires full AutoCAD, that single requirement outweighs the fact that most of the team drafts in 2D.

When full AutoCAD is the better fit
You create or edit 3D designs
Select full AutoCAD when 3D is part of the deliverable rather than an occasional wish. The full product’s 3D drafting, modeling, visualization, rotation, panning, and advanced geometric views are specifically the capabilities Autodesk identifies beyond LT’s 2D focus.
Your discipline depends on a specialized toolset
Architecture, mechanical, mapping, MEP, plant, electrical, and raster-design workflows should be checked against the seven named toolsets. If your organization’s process requires one, full AutoCAD is the appropriate product tier because Autodesk does not include those toolsets with LT.
Your automation stack uses full-version interfaces
Choose full AutoCAD when an existing integration or development plan calls for ObjectARX, managed .NET libraries, Visual LISP IDE features, Visual Basic applications, or the broader macro and automation set listed by Autodesk. Do not replace a known API dependency with an assumption that AutoLISP support will be equivalent.
Your collaboration requirements exceed basic access
Autodesk lists web and mobile access for LT and additional collaboration capabilities for full AutoCAD. Determine which people need to view, edit, coordinate, or share drawings, then verify that the required collaboration feature is available for your platform and release. “Web and mobile access” is not a guarantee that every collaboration function is identical between products.
Pricing: what the listed difference means
Autodesk’s US comparison page, current when retrieved in 2026, lists AutoCAD LT at $70 per month or $540 per year. It lists full AutoCAD at $260 per month or $2,095 per year. Autodesk’s LT purchase page labels its figures suggested retail prices and repeats the $70 monthly and $540 annual amounts.
| Subscription | Monthly price shown by Autodesk | Annual price shown by Autodesk | Annualized monthly billing |
|---|---|---|---|
| AutoCAD LT | $70 | $540 | $840 |
| AutoCAD | $260 | $2,095 | $3,120 |
The annualized monthly figures are simple multiplication of Autodesk’s listed monthly prices and are included to show the difference between billing choices; they are not a separate Autodesk quote. On the listed annual plans, full AutoCAD costs $1,555 more per seat than LT. On twelve months of monthly billing, the difference is $2,280 per seat.

A practical decision process
Step 1: Define the deliverable, not the job title
Write down what each person must produce: 2D plans, annotated construction documents, electrical layouts, mechanical details, 3D models, visual views, or automated batches. A person called an engineer, architect, technician, or drafter may still have a completely 2D workload, while a nominally 2D role may support a 3D or toolset-dependent project.
Step 2: Identify hard requirements
Circle any requirement that is non-negotiable: 3D modeling, a named specialized toolset, ObjectARX, managed .NET, Visual Basic applications, Visual LISP IDE functionality, or a full-version collaboration feature. One hard requirement is enough to put that seat in the full AutoCAD column.
Step 3: Separate “nice to have” from “must have”
Do not buy full AutoCAD solely because it has a longer feature list. If 3D viewing is an occasional curiosity and no project requires it, or if a colleague uses a full-version feature that your seat never touches, those facts do not automatically justify the higher subscription. Conversely, do not downgrade a seat when a single production script or specialist toolset is essential.
Step 4: Validate your files and automation
Use representative drawings, templates, AutoLISP routines, and documented procedures in a controlled evaluation. Verify that the commands, scripts, and handoffs your team actually uses are supported in the intended product and release. This is more reliable than comparing product names or relying on a generic claim that the products are “compatible.”

Step 5: Price the required seats
Apply the current regional quote to the number of seats that need each capability. A mixed deployment can be logical when some people perform only 2D work and others need 3D, specialist toolsets, or advanced APIs; the correct mix depends on licensing terms and your organization’s administration, so confirm those terms with Autodesk before purchase.

Common selection mistakes
Assuming LT is a demo version
LT is a dedicated 2D product, not merely a temporary demonstration of AutoCAD. It supports substantial drafting and documentation work and includes some AutoLISP customization. The meaningful limitations are the capabilities Autodesk assigns to full AutoCAD, not an inability to perform professional 2D production.
Assuming LT has no customization
The claim that LT cannot be customized at all is too broad. Autodesk lists AutoLISP support for LT. The correct question is which language, API, or development environment your automation uses, not whether any customization exists.
Buying full AutoCAD for a title instead of a requirement
A senior title or an engineering department label does not prove that 3D, a specialist toolset, or a full API is needed. Map the actual tasks and dependencies for each seat.

Expecting one price to apply everywhere
The published figures are US suggested retail prices and may change. A quote in another region can differ, and taxes or account conditions may affect the amount you pay. Recheck the local Autodesk purchase page at the point of purchase.
Ignoring release and platform qualifications
Autodesk notes that feature availability can depend on platform and release. Confirm those details for web, mobile, collaboration, and automation requirements rather than treating the comparison table as a promise for every environment.
Recommendations by workflow
Choose AutoCAD LT when
- Your deliverables are precision 2D drawings and documentation.
- You do not create or edit 3D models or rely on full AutoCAD’s 3D views.
- You do not need Architecture, Mechanical, Map 3D, MEP, Plant 3D, Electrical, or Raster Design.
- Your customization can be delivered with the AutoLISP support Autodesk lists for LT.
- The listed US price difference, or the equivalent regional difference, matters to your budget.
Choose full AutoCAD when
- 3D drafting, modeling, visualization, rotation, panning, or advanced geometric views are required.
- A project depends on one of Autodesk’s seven specialized toolsets.
- Your automation requires ObjectARX, managed .NET libraries, Visual LISP IDE features, Visual Basic applications, or other full-version interfaces.
- Your collaboration workflow needs capabilities Autodesk lists in addition to LT’s web and mobile access.
- You have verified the exact platform and release needed by your team.
Bottom line for a purchase decision
Start with AutoCAD LT for a 2D-only drafting and documentation workflow, including workflows that need the AutoLISP customization Autodesk lists for LT. Move to full AutoCAD when the work crosses into 3D, requires a named specialized toolset, depends on a broader API, or needs additional collaboration capabilities. Check those hard requirements first, then confirm the current regional price and platform details; that produces a more defensible choice than paying for every feature simply because it is available.
