The fastest way to learn AutoCAD is to complete one small drawing from start to finish. Open a new drawing, create a line, rectangle and circle, place them with coordinate entry and drafting aids, then select, modify, organize and save the result. This guide follows that progression and adds dimensions, hatching, blocks and plotting when your drawing needs to communicate more than basic geometry.

What you need before you begin

AutoCAD is Autodesk’s computer-aided design software for creating, editing and annotating precise 2D and 3D drawings. The desktop application runs on Windows and macOS; web and mobile access are included with an AutoCAD subscription. Hardware and operating-system requirements vary by AutoCAD release and platform, so check the requirements for your exact version before installing, especially if you plan to use large drawings or 3D features.

Choose an access route

Option Best for Important conditions
AutoCAD subscription People who need full 2D and 3D AutoCAD regularly Includes desktop software plus web and mobile access. Autodesk’s US CAD overview showed example prices of $260 per month, $2,095 per year or $6,285 for three years, checked October 13, 2026. These are time-sensitive examples, not a guaranteed checkout quote.
AutoCAD LT Users whose work is primarily 2D drafting It is the 2D-focused product. Confirm current features and pricing on Autodesk’s purchase page before committing.
Autodesk Flex Occasional users who do not want a recurring subscription Uses tokens on a pay-as-you-go basis. Total cost depends on how often and how long you use the software.
15-day trial People evaluating the full application Autodesk advertises a 15-day trial. Check the current terms and conversion rules when you start it.
Education access Eligible students and educators Autodesk offers one-year access that can be renewed while you remain eligible. It is restricted to educational purposes and cannot be used for commercial, professional or other for-profit work.

For a first exercise, use a trial, subscription or eligible education account that matches your intended use. Do not use an education entitlement for paid client work.

Start a drawing and identify the working areas

  1. Launch AutoCAD. On the start screen, choose Start Drawing to create a blank drawing, or select Open and browse to an existing DWG file.
  2. Choose a workspace. The Drafting & Annotation workspace exposes the panels most useful for a first 2D drawing. You can switch workspaces from the workspace control if your screen is arranged differently.
  3. Locate the command line. AutoCAD reports prompts, options and errors there. Click in the drawing area and type a command, then press Enter. Command-line entry is often faster and remains available when a ribbon button is hidden.
  4. Find the status bar drafting aids. Common controls include grid display, snap, orthographic mode, polar tracking, object snaps and dynamic input. You can turn them on or off while drawing; highlighted icons indicate active modes.
  5. Set the view. Use the mouse wheel or navigation controls to zoom and pan. Zooming changes what you see, not the size of your geometry.

AutoCAD drawings are normally stored as DWG files. Work in a new file until you understand the exercise, then save it with a meaningful name and location.

Set units and precision before drawing

Decide what one drawing unit represents before you place geometry. A mechanical part may use millimeters, an architectural plan may use millimeters, centimeters or inches, and a conceptual diagram may simply use unitless coordinates. Consistency matters more than the label.

  1. Type UNITS and press Enter.
  2. Choose the length type, such as Decimal or Architectural, and set the displayed precision appropriate to the work.
  3. Set the insertion scale if you will later insert blocks, images or other drawings. Match it to the units used by those files.
  4. Accept the settings, then verify your choice by drawing a short line and checking its measured length.

Units settings control how values are interpreted and displayed; they do not automatically resize existing geometry. If an imported drawing is the wrong size, use a deliberate scale operation after determining the source and target units.

Create your first 2D geometry

Lines, rectangles and circles are useful first objects because they teach the command sequence, coordinate entry and selection without requiring a complicated design. The following exercise creates a simple plate: a 120-by-80 rectangle, a smaller rectangle inside it and two circles.

Draw the outer rectangle

  1. Type RECTANG and press Enter.
  2. For the first corner, type 0,0 and press Enter. This is an absolute coordinate measured from the drawing origin.
  3. For the opposite corner, type 120,80 and press Enter. AutoCAD creates a closed rectangular polyline.
  4. Use the mouse wheel to zoom so the rectangle is easy to see.

If your locale uses a decimal comma, coordinate separators can conflict with decimal notation. In that case, use the coordinate format AutoCAD displays in its prompts or enter points by clicking with object snaps and dynamic input.

Add a construction line

  1. Type LINE and press Enter.
  2. Enter 0,40, press Enter, then enter 120,40 and press Enter.
  3. Press Enter again to end the command.

This horizontal line demonstrates a precise midpoint across the plate. With Ortho mode enabled, you can also click the end points while AutoCAD constrains the line horizontally or vertically.

Draw an inner rectangle

  1. Type RECTANG.
  2. Enter the first corner as 20,20.
  3. Enter the opposite corner as 100,60.

The inner rectangle leaves a 20-unit margin on every side of the outer rectangle. Exact coordinates make the margin repeatable and easy to edit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Place two circles

  1. Type CIRCLE and press Enter.
  2. Enter the center 20,40, then enter a radius of 8.
  3. Repeat the command with center 100,40 and radius 8.

These circles sit on the construction line. If you prefer a diameter, choose the Diameter option in the command prompt and enter the diameter value instead of a radius.

Use coordinates and drafting aids for accurate placement

AutoCAD accepts several coordinate methods. Absolute coordinates, such as 40,25, locate a point from the origin. Relative coordinates begin with an at sign, such as @30,0, and locate a point from the last point. Polar input uses a distance and angle, such as @50<30, to create a 50-unit segment at 30 degrees.

Object snaps

Object snaps (often called OSNAP) let you select exact geometric features instead of estimating with the cursor. Useful modes for this exercise are Endpoint, Midpoint, Center, Intersection and Quadrant. Open the object-snap settings from the status bar, enable only the modes you need and pause over an object until AutoCAD displays the snap marker before clicking.

Ortho and polar tracking

Ortho mode constrains cursor movement to horizontal and vertical directions. Polar tracking guides the cursor along preset angles, such as 30, 45 or 90 degrees. Use Ortho for the construction line and rectangular edges; use polar tracking when you need repeated angled geometry.

Dynamic input

Dynamic input displays distances and angles near the cursor while you draw. It is convenient for short commands, but the command line remains the authoritative place to read prompts and options. If dynamic input becomes distracting, toggle it off and continue entering values at the command line.

Select and edit the objects

Editing is the core of an efficient CAD workflow: create rough geometry, then change position, size, orientation or repetition without redrawing everything.

Select reliably

  1. Press Esc to cancel any active command.
  2. Click an object to select it. Grips appear at key points.
  3. Hold Ctrl while selecting to add or remove individual objects from the selection set.
  4. Drag a selection window from left to right to select only objects completely inside the window. Drag from right to left for a crossing window that also selects objects touched by the window.
  5. Press Esc to clear the selection.

Selection direction is a frequent beginner error: a right-to-left crossing window can select construction geometry you did not intend to move.

Move the inner rectangle

  1. Type MOVE and press Enter.
  2. Select the inner rectangle and press Enter.
  3. Choose a base point, such as its lower-left corner.
  4. Enter a displacement such as @10,0 to move it 10 units to the right, then press Enter.

Using a relative displacement preserves the rectangle’s size while changing its position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copy a circle

  1. Type COPY and press Enter.
  2. Select the left circle and press Enter.
  3. Choose its center as the base point.
  4. Enter the destination center, or type a relative displacement such as @80,0.
  5. Press Enter to finish.

Copy creates a second independent object. Later edits to one circle do not automatically change the other.

Change size or shape

Select an object and inspect the Properties palette. For a circle, you can edit its center and radius; for a rectangle, you can inspect its layer, color, linetype and geometric data. You can also use grips for quick changes: click a grip, enter a coordinate or distance, and press Enter. Grips are useful for small adjustments, while command-based editing is easier to repeat and document.

Trim and extend

Use TRIM to remove portions that cross a boundary and EXTEND to lengthen an object until it reaches a boundary. When prompted for cutting or boundary edges, select the objects that should control the edit, press Enter, then select the segments to change. If the result is unexpected, undo immediately and check that you selected the correct boundary objects.

Offset a parallel edge

OFFSET creates a parallel line, arc or polyline at a specified distance. Select the outer rectangle, enter an offset distance such as 10, then click the side where the new geometry should appear. Offset is useful for walls, borders and repeated clearances, but it can create extra geometry if you offset a closed object inward and outward without a plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organize the drawing with layers and properties

Layers separate object categories so you can control visibility, color, linetype and plotting. A simple beginner structure might include:

Layer Objects Typical use
Object Outer and inner rectangles Main geometry that should print prominently
Construction Center lines and temporary guides Reference geometry that may be hidden or plotted lightly
Annotation Text and dimensions Notes and measurements
Hatch Solid or patterned fills Material or area indication
  1. Open the Layer Properties Manager from the Home tab or type LAYER.
  2. Create the layers you need and assign names that describe their purpose.
  3. Set a layer current before creating new objects, or select existing objects and change their layer in the Properties palette.
  4. Use the lightbulb or freeze controls to hide layers temporarily while editing.
  5. Check the plot setting for each layer before printing. A layer that is visible on screen can be configured not to plot.

Object properties can override layer defaults. If an object refuses to display as expected, inspect its layer, color, linetype and visibility settings rather than repeatedly redrawing it.

Add dimensions, text and hatches

Dimensions

Dimensions communicate measured intent rather than forcing the reader to infer scale. Use linear dimensions for horizontal or vertical distances, aligned dimensions for sloped distances, radius dimensions for circles and diameter dimensions when the full circular size matters.

  1. Make the Annotation layer current.
  2. Start the appropriate dimension command from the Annotate tab or type its command name.
  3. Snap to the exact endpoints, center or circle edge requested by the command.
  4. Place the dimension away from crowded geometry and click to finish.
  5. Check the displayed units and precision in the dimension style before adding many dimensions.

Do not type a measurement as ordinary text when a true associative dimension is required; a dimension can update when geometry changes, while plain text can become incorrect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Text and notes

Use single-line text for short labels and multiline text for notes. Set the text height and style before placing several notes so the drawing remains consistent. Keep notes on the Annotation layer and avoid placing text directly over lines or hatches.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Hatch

  1. Make the Hatch layer current.
  2. Start HATCH.
  3. Click inside a closed boundary such as the inner rectangle, or select the boundary objects explicitly.
  4. Choose a pattern, scale and angle suitable for the drawing.
  5. Preview the result and press Enter to create the hatch.

Hatch requires a closed, detectable boundary. If AutoCAD reports that no boundary was found, zoom in, inspect for gaps and use a closed polyline or a temporary boundary rather than forcing a fill into an open shape.

Save, reopen and prepare an output

Save the DWG

  1. Use Save As for the first save so you can choose the folder, filename and DWG format.
  2. Use a descriptive filename that includes the project and revision, such as plate-exercise-rev01.dwg.
  3. Press Ctrl+S regularly. AutoCAD also creates recovery information, but recovery files are not a substitute for deliberate saves.
  4. Close and reopen the file once to verify that layers, dimensions, hatches and geometry persist.

Keep the original DWG separate from exported PDFs or images. The DWG is the editable source; an export is usually the shareable view.

Use layouts and plotting

Model space is where you create the geometry at its real drawing size. A layout (paper space) represents a sheet for printing or PDF output. When you need a shareable result, create or select a layout, add a viewport that shows the model, set the viewport scale, choose paper size and orientation, and open the Plot dialog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Switch to a layout tab.
  2. Set the page setup: printer or PDF driver, paper size, orientation, plot area and plot style.
  3. Double-click inside the viewport and set a suitable scale. Lock the viewport after positioning it so accidental zooming does not change the scale.
  4. Return to paper space and add a title, notes or sheet dimensions if required.
  5. Preview the plot before creating the PDF or sending it to a printer.

Plot preview catches clipped dimensions, hidden layers, incorrect lineweights and an unsuitable scale before they become a finished output.

Common beginner problems and fixes

  • The object is invisible. Check that its layer is on, thawed and not set to no-plot only when you are viewing a layout. Press ZOOM and choose Extents to locate geometry that was created far from the origin.
  • The size is wrong after importing. Identify the source units, compare a known measurement and use a calculated scale factor. Do not guess based on how the drawing looks on screen.
  • A line will not meet a corner. Enable Endpoint object snap and click the actual corner. A visually close click can leave a gap that prevents hatching or trimming.
  • Trim does nothing. Confirm that the selected boundary and target objects are in the same plane and that the segments actually intersect or can be extended to one another.
  • Hatch fails to create. Look for tiny gaps, overlapping boundaries or objects on a frozen layer. Close the boundary or select a known closed polyline.
  • Everything is selected by accident. Use a left-to-right window for fully enclosed objects, select individual objects with Ctrl, and press Esc before starting the next command.
  • The printed drawing is blank or incomplete. Check the layout viewport, layer plot settings, page setup, plot area and plot preview. A layer can be visible on screen yet configured not to plot.
  • You are stuck in a command. Press Esc once or twice, read the command-line prompt and start again. If an edit went wrong, use Undo immediately instead of trying to repair several dependent changes.

A practical first-drawing checklist

  • Units and precision are set for the project.
  • The outer rectangle, inner rectangle, circles and construction line are placed with coordinates or object snaps.
  • At least one object has been moved, one copied and one changed through Properties or grips.
  • Objects are assigned to sensible layers.
  • Dimensions and notes use a consistent annotation style.
  • Hatches have closed boundaries and appropriate scale.
  • The DWG has been saved, reopened and checked.
  • A layout and plot preview have been prepared if a PDF or printed sheet is required.

Once this exercise feels routine, replace the sample plate with a small plan, bracket or room outline. Keep the same sequence: establish units, create accurate base geometry, edit it, organize it, annotate it and verify the output.
