AutoCAD DWG Files Explained: Formats, Compatibility, and Safe Sharing

DWG is AutoCAD’s native drawing format, but a .dwg extension does not tell you whether a particular AutoCAD release can open the file. The internal DWG format is tied to release generations: newer AutoCAD versions generally read older formats, while older releases may reject files saved by newer ones. Before sending a drawing, identify its format, ask the recipient which release they use, and save or convert a copy to the format that release supports.

Viewing, editing, and converting are separate jobs. Autodesk lists Autodesk Viewer, DWG TrueView, and AutoCAD Web for viewing; editing requires an application that supports the drawing’s objects; conversion can be done with Save As when the file opens or DWG TrueView’s DWG Convert feature when it does not.

What a DWG file contains

Autodesk Support describes drawing files as “the native data files that are created when using AutoCAD-based products.” A DWG can contain 2D geometry, 3D models, annotations, layers, blocks, layouts, and associated design data. Autodesk’s broader description of the DWG environment also includes information such as maps, photos, BIM data, and point clouds, depending on the product and objects used.

The filename extension is only the outer label. A file named project.dwg may use the AutoCAD 2018 format, the AutoCAD 2013 format, or an older generation. Compatibility is determined by that internal format and by whether the receiving application understands the objects inside the drawing.

The practical rule is directional: a current AutoCAD release can usually open and edit older DWG formats, but an older release is not guaranteed to open a newer format. Saving a drawing in an older format improves compatibility, yet it cannot make every newer application-specific object or feature available in an old release.

AutoCAD DWG format generations

Autodesk’s compatibility table dated May 27, 2026 groups releases as follows. The label in the middle column is the DWG format family, not a promise that every object from a newer release will behave identically after conversion.

AutoCAD release DWG format family Compatibility implication
2025–2027 AutoCAD 2018 DWG Uses the same format family identified for 2018–2024 in the 2026 table.
2018–2024 AutoCAD 2018 DWG Older releases may need a converted copy.
2013–2017 AutoCAD 2013 DWG Suitable target for a recipient using AutoCAD 2013 through 2017.
2010–2012 AutoCAD 2010 DWG Use this family for those releases when an older-format copy is required.
2007–2009 AutoCAD 2007 DWG Older applications may require this format.
2004–2006 AutoCAD 2004 DWG Use only when the recipient’s release is in this group.
2000–2002 AutoCAD 2000 DWG Legacy format family.
AutoCAD R14 R14 Legacy R14 drawing format.
AutoCAD R12 R12 DXF The table identifies R12 with the DXF exchange format rather than a modern DWG family.

AutoCAD Mechanical has its own Mechanical DWG format. If a drawing contains Mechanical-specific data, confirm that the recipient has the appropriate Mechanical product and version rather than assuming a conversion to a general AutoCAD format will preserve everything.

Ask the recipient before you save

Do not choose an older format based only on your own installation. Ask which AutoCAD-based release the recipient will use and whether they need to edit the file or only inspect it. Autodesk’s help uses this example: a subcontractor running AutoCAD 2016 should receive a drawing saved in the AutoCAD 2013 drawing format.

  • For a recipient on AutoCAD 2013–2017: choose AutoCAD 2013 DWG.
  • For a recipient on AutoCAD 2010–2012: choose AutoCAD 2010 DWG.
  • For a recipient on AutoCAD 2007–2009: choose AutoCAD 2007 DWG.
  • For a viewer only: first determine whether a viewer or web tool meets the need; conversion may be unnecessary.

If the recipient cannot tell you the release, send a separate question rather than guessing. A file that opens in your current release may still fail at the recipient’s first step.

How to identify the DWG format

Read the format in AutoCAD

Open the drawing in AutoCAD and look at the command line. Autodesk documents that opening a drawing displays its format there. This is the quickest method when the file opens normally.

Inspect the first six characters

When AutoCAD cannot open the file, make a working copy and open that copy in a text editor that can display the beginning of a binary file without modifying it. The first six characters contain the DWG version code. Compare that code with Autodesk’s code list to determine the release group.

Two commonly cited entries in Autodesk’s December 2023 code list are AC1027 for AutoCAD 2013–2017 and AC1032 for AutoCAD 2018–2024. That 2023 list does not cover 2025–2027. Autodesk’s newer May 2026 compatibility table groups 2025–2027 with the AutoCAD 2018 DWG format, but it does not extend the 2023 code table with a separately stated code for those releases. Do not treat the older code list as independent confirmation of codes beyond the range it names.

Choose the right tool for the job

Job Possible Autodesk tool What it does not guarantee
View or measure a drawing Autodesk Viewer, DWG TrueView, or AutoCAD Web Viewing access does not provide full editing or preserve every application-specific object.
Edit geometry and drawing data An AutoCAD-based application that supports the file and its objects An older release may not open a newer format, and unsupported objects may be proxied, lost, or become uneditable.
Convert an opened file AutoCAD Save As Changing the save format does not automatically solve every command or object-compatibility issue.
Convert a file that will not open Latest DWG TrueView with DWG Convert Conversion is not the same as editing and cannot guarantee identical behavior for unsupported objects.

Autodesk’s product information also describes shared-view workflows. Treat these as ways to distribute or review information, not as guarantees that every recipient can edit the source drawing. Autodesk software may warn when a file was last saved by a non-Autodesk or non-RealDWG-based application and when integrity or compatibility is not guaranteed.

Convert a drawing that opens in AutoCAD

  1. Open the original drawing in your installed AutoCAD release.
  2. Choose Save As.
  3. In the file-type or format list, select the older DWG family that matches the recipient’s release, such as AutoCAD 2013 Drawing (*.dwg) for an AutoCAD 2016 recipient.
  4. Change the filename or save it in a separate folder so the original remains untouched. Autodesk specifically recommends avoiding an overwrite.
  5. Open the converted copy and check layers, dimensions, external references, blocks, layouts, and any specialized objects before sending it.
  6. Tell the recipient which format you supplied and which AutoCAD release you targeted.

If you regularly exchange files with an older release, open the Options dialog, go to the Open and Save tab, and set the default save format. This changes the default for ordinary saves; it is not a substitute for checking each delivery.

Convert a drawing that will not open

When the installed AutoCAD cannot read the file, Autodesk documents using the latest DWG TrueView and its DWG Convert feature. Use a copy, because conversion creates a different file and you may need the original for a newer workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the latest DWG TrueView available from Autodesk.
  2. Start DWG Convert and add the problem drawing.
  3. Select the target DWG format that matches the recipient’s AutoCAD release.
  4. Choose the output location and conversion options, then run the conversion.
  5. Open the converted file in a compatible AutoCAD release or viewer and inspect it before delivery.

AutoCAD also includes the DWGCONVERT command for batch conversion when several drawings need the same target format. Keep the source files separate from the converted output so a failed or lossy conversion does not destroy the only copy.

When DWG TrueView itself reports an incompatibility

Autodesk has documented an error in which an older DWG TrueView cannot open a drawing created with a newer TrueView version. The stated resolution is to install the latest TrueView. This is a tool-version problem in addition to the DWG file’s own format compatibility; installing an older viewer is not a reliable workaround for a newer drawing.

Commands and objects that need extra handling

Setting an older default save format does not necessarily make every exchange command produce an older-compatible result. Autodesk specifically calls out WBLOCK, REFEDIT, COPYCLIP, and COPYBASE as commands whose behavior may require separate handling.

For selected objects that must reach an earlier release, use this controlled workflow:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use WBLOCK to write the selected objects to a separate drawing.
  2. Open that separate drawing and save it in the older DWG format.
  3. In the recipient’s older release, bring the objects in with XREF or INSERT.
  4. Check scale, layer names, annotative behavior, attributes, and references after insertion.

This approach isolates the objects being exchanged and avoids assuming that clipboard or reference-edit operations have applied the same conversion as a normal Save As.

Common problems and practical fixes

“The extension says DWG, so it should open.”

The extension does not identify the internal version. Read the format in AutoCAD or inspect the first six characters and map the code through Autodesk’s list.

“I saved to an older format, but something changed.”

Format conversion can affect newer entities, proxy objects, annotative behavior, or application-specific data. Compare the converted copy with the original and ask whether the recipient needs editable source objects or only a visual reference.

“The recipient can view it but cannot edit it.”

A viewer is designed for inspection, not full authoring. Provide an appropriately converted DWG to an AutoCAD release that supports editing, or agree on a shared-view workflow when editing is not required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The file opens, but references or layouts are missing.”

DWG conversion does not automatically package external references, images, fonts, plot styles, or custom objects. Send the dependent files through the project’s established exchange process and verify paths and permissions on the recipient’s system.

“Conversion overwrote my working file.”

Always make a copy first, use a new filename, and write converted output to a separate folder. This preserves a newer-format source for later edits.

“The older release still rejects the converted drawing.”

Confirm the exact target format, not merely the year in the filename. Re-run conversion with the recipient’s release group, then test the output in that release or in an equivalent installation before delivery.

A reliable DWG handoff checklist

  • Record the sender’s AutoCAD release and the drawing’s internal DWG format.
  • Ask the recipient’s exact AutoCAD-based release and whether they need viewing or editing.
  • Choose the corresponding older DWG family when backward compatibility is required.
  • Save or convert a copy; never sacrifice the newer original.
  • Handle WBLOCK, REFEDIT, COPYCLIP, and COPYBASE exchanges separately when necessary.
  • Check application-specific objects, external references, images, fonts, plot styles, layouts, and dimensions.
  • Open the output in a compatible release or viewer before sending.
  • Label the delivered file with its target format and include any dependencies the recipient needs.
