What was Austria’s inflation rate in September 2026?
Statistics Austria’s October 2 flash estimate put national consumer price inflation (CPI) at 3.6% year on year and 0.2% month on month. The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), used for comparisons across the European Union, was 3.5% year on year and 0.6% month on month. Both September readings are preliminary estimates, not final results. Statistics Austria explains the measures and release schedule.

The indices also use different weights, so their rates need not match. The 3.5% figure is Austria’s September HICP estimate, not its national CPI rate. Statistics Austria’s CPI/HICP overview describes their coverage and purpose.
Why did inflation rise from August?
National CPI inflation increased from 3.2% in August to 3.6% in September, a rise of 0.4 percentage points. Statistics Austria attributed that entire increase to higher fuel and heating oil prices. The agency’s Director General Statistics, Manuela Lenk, said: “This rise of 0.4 percentage points is entirely attributable to higher fuel and heating oil prices.” Statistics Austria’s September flash release reports the change and attribution.

Energy prices were 14.5% higher than a year earlier, following a 9.9% annual increase in August. Energy made up 8.19% of the CPI basket and contributed 1.207 percentage points to the September rate. The figures distinguish a fast-rising category from the largest contributor to inflation overall.
Which prices contributed most?
Services remained the largest contributor to the CPI rate, even though energy prices rose much faster. Services prices increased 4.2% year on year; with a 49.50% CPI weight, they contributed 2.031 percentage points to the overall rate. Energy’s 14.5% increase explains the month-to-month acceleration, while services remained the largest component of the measured inflation rate.

Why are the September figures preliminary?
A flash estimate is produced from price data available at the end of the reference month. Statistics Austria says usually 80% to 90% of collected CPI prices are available for the flash estimate, and those prices have not yet gone through full statistical validation. Delayed reports and routine corrections can change the subsequent results. The agency specifically says the flash CPI estimate must not be used for contractual value adjustments. As of October 3, 2026, Statistics Austria had scheduled the preliminary September CPI/HICP release for October 16 and the final release for November 18. Those later publications may revise the headline rates and provide a fuller validated breakdown; the figures above are the October 2 flash estimate.

In August, the annual CPI rate was 3.2% and HICP inflation was 2.9%; monthly CPI inflation was 0.6%. September therefore brought a faster annual rate for both indices, although the monthly movement differed: CPI rose 0.2% in September, while HICP rose 0.6%. August’s category explanation is specific to that month and should not be treated as a September breakdown. Statistics Austria’s August release contains that month’s figures.
