What a SIM-only mobile plan includes
A SIM-only plan supplies mobile service for a handset you already own. You pay for calls, texts and mobile data, while the phone itself is not included. A provider may sell the service as prepaid, postpaid, month-to-month or a fixed 12-month arrangement. If you buy a handset through a provider, its repayment is a separate cost and may add early-exit charges.
Prepaid and postpaid are different commitments
| Feature | Prepaid | Postpaid |
|---|---|---|
| Payment timing | You pay before the next recharge period starts. | You are billed after the billing period, subject to the provider’s payment rules. |
| Renewal | Service normally stops or changes when the allowance expires unless you recharge. | Service renews automatically while the account remains active. |
| Budget control | Useful when you want a fixed spend and no unexpected bill. | Convenient for automatic renewal, but check excess-data and other extra-charge rules. |
| Contract | Often flexible, although individual offers can have longer terms. | Can be month-to-month or fixed-term; check cancellation conditions. |
Neither structure is automatically cheaper. A low prepaid price can be less attractive if its allowance expires after 28 days, while a postpaid plan can cost more than expected if data overage is permitted. Compare the complete annual cost and the consequences of missing a payment or recharge.

Current Australian offer examples and market context
The following figures were listed by Canstar on 13 October 2026. They illustrate how introductory pricing works; they are not permanent recommendations. Verify the provider’s current price, network, data rules, SIM options and eligibility before purchase.
| Offer example | Introductory price | Price after promotion | Data | Billing and other details |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moose Mobile SIM-only | $14 per month for six months | $23 per month thereafter | 30 GB | Billing cycle, network access, speed policy, international inclusions and SIM format were not stated in the listing. |
| DODO SIM-only | $15 per month for four months | $30 per month thereafter | 40 GB | Billing cycle, network access, speed policy, international inclusions and SIM format were not stated in the listing. |
| Low-range postpaid plans from each of the three national mobile network operators, ACCC 2024–2025 report | Price not stated | Price not stated | 50 GB or 60 GB | These are market observations for the report period, not a current plan list or a guarantee of identical terms. |
The two retail examples have different promotional lengths and data allowances, so the $1 difference during the introductory period does not show which is cheaper over a full year. Their underlying networks and speed conditions also need to be checked separately.
What the market data says about price and use
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s 2024–2025 Communications Market Report recorded a 6.4% increase, equivalent to $2.40 per month, in median advertised mobile-service prices compared with 2023–24. This describes the sampled market and reporting period; it is not a forecast and should not be treated as the price of a particular plan in October 2026.

The same report recorded 18.9 GB of average monthly data use among retail postpaid customers during the three months ending June 2025. WhistleOut’s October 2026 guide cites an ACCC-attributed average of 14.5 GB per month. The different figures use different reporting presentations and dates, so neither should be treated as a mandatory allowance for every user.
How much mobile data do you need?
Your own usage history is more useful than a national average. On an iPhone, open Settings → Mobile Service (or Mobile Data) and review usage by billing period. On Android, the path is usually Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → App data usage, although labels vary by manufacturer. Reset the counter at the start of a billing cycle if your phone does not align automatically with the provider’s period.

Match the allowance to your pattern
- Mostly Wi‑Fi: If calls, messaging and browsing happen mainly at home or work, a small allowance may be sufficient. Confirm that the plan does not impose a harsh speed reduction after the allowance is used.
- Regular commuting: Music, maps, social feeds and work messaging away from Wi‑Fi require a buffer above your observed monthly use. Include travel days and software updates that occur over mobile data.
- Streaming and hotspot use: Video streaming, cloud backups, gaming downloads and tethering can consume data quickly. Check whether hotspot use is allowed and whether the provider applies a separate speed or fair-use rule.
- Multiple devices: A phone used as a hotspot for a tablet or laptop needs more headroom than a phone used alone. Add the data used by connected devices before selecting an allowance.
Choose an allowance that covers your highest normal month rather than your lowest month. If a plan offers data banking, read the expiry rule: banked data may disappear when you change plan, miss a recharge or reach a stated cap.
Coverage, network access and speed
Coverage is a local question. A national brand name or a low price cannot guarantee usable service at your home, workplace, underground station or regular travel route. Two providers can use the same underlying network yet deliver different terms, speed caps, congestion management or roaming access.
Check service before you port your number
- Enter your home and work addresses in the provider’s coverage checker.
- Check the roads, rail corridors and regional locations where you regularly travel.
- Look separately for indoor, outdoor and 5G coverage; a map may show one without promising the others.
- Ask whether the plan receives the same network bands, maximum speeds and 5G access as the provider’s premium offers.
- Read congestion, fair-use and post-allowance speed conditions. An advertised maximum is not a guaranteed speed at every location or time.
If reliable service matters for work or emergencies, keep an alternative communication method during the changeover and test the new SIM at your most important locations before cancelling the old service.
Compare the real cost, not the sign-up price
Calculate the cost over the period you expect to keep the plan. For a monthly offer, add every promotional month and every standard-price month, then divide by the number of months. Include activation fees, required recharges, international add-ons and any handset repayment that is part of the same purchase.
| Offer | First-year calculation from the listed prices | First-year total | Average per month over 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moose Mobile, 30 GB | 6 × $14, then 6 × $23 | $222 | $18.50 |
| DODO, 40 GB | 4 × $15, then 8 × $30 | $300 | $25.00 |
These calculations use the prices and promotional periods listed on 13 October 2026 and exclude fees or conditions that were not stated. They show why a cheaper introductory rate can produce a higher ongoing cost. Recalculate if the provider bills every 28 days: thirteen 28-day renewals cover roughly a year, while twelve calendar-month payments do not represent the same number of service days.

Questions to ask about the advertised price
- How many renewals receive the discount, and on what date does the standard price begin?
- Is the price available to new customers only, or also to existing customers changing plans?
- Is automatic payment required?
- Are activation, delivery, replacement-SIM or international-call charges extra?
- Does the price assume a 28-day recharge, a calendar month or a fixed contract term?
- What happens if you use all included data?
Features that can change the value of a plan
Data after the allowance
Providers may slow data, sell an automatic top-up, charge for extra data or stop data access. A plan with a smaller allowance can still suit a light user if its excess-data policy is predictable; a larger allowance is less valuable if the speed becomes unusable after a threshold.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesData banking and expiry
Banking can protect unused data, but only when the balance survives the next renewal and does not expire after a short period. Confirm whether banked data is used before current-month data, whether there is a maximum bank and whether changing plans deletes the balance.
Calls, texts and international use
National calls and SMS are commonly included, but international calls, international SMS and roaming are separate benefits. Check the countries covered, minutes supplied, per-minute rates after the allowance and whether roaming requires a daily fee or an add-on.
5G, hotspot and speed limits
5G access may depend on the exact plan, compatible handset and local coverage. Confirm whether hotspot traffic is permitted and whether the plan has a maximum download speed, a lower speed after the allowance or a fair-use threshold.
Physical SIM and eSIM
A physical SIM works in a compatible SIM slot. An eSIM requires a handset and operating system that support eSIM activation, and some providers issue a QR code or app-based profile rather than a plastic card. Check compatibility before ordering; choosing an eSIM does not improve coverage or speed by itself.

How to switch while keeping your mobile number
The ACCC says an active Australian mobile number can be ported to a new provider. Do not cancel the old service first: only an active number can be ported, and cancelling early can make the number unavailable for transfer.
- Record your account details. Have the current account name, mobile number and any identity information required by the new provider ready. Ensure the details match the existing service.
- Check the handset and coverage. Confirm that the phone accepts the new SIM or eSIM and that the provider’s coverage checker includes your important locations.
- Select the exact offer. Save the advertised price, promotion end date, allowance, billing period, speed policy and cancellation terms so you can identify changes later.
- Request number retention during sign-up. Tell the new provider that you want to port the existing number instead of receiving a new number.
- Keep the old service active. Follow the provider’s identity checks and wait for confirmation that porting is complete. Service may be intermittent during the transfer.
- Test the new service. Make a call, send an SMS, use mobile data and check voicemail. Test from home and another routine location.
- Close the old account only after completion. Review the final bill, return any rented equipment if required and remove saved payment details when the account is settled.
When buying a handset changes the decision
A SIM-only plan is simplest when your current phone is suitable. Buying a handset outright requires more money at the start but makes it easier to change provider or plan later. Financing a handset through a mobile contract spreads payments, yet ending the service early can leave handset charges or other amounts payable. Compare the phone’s total repayment with its outright price separately from the SIM service.

The promotion ended sooner than expected
Check the original order confirmation and the stated number of discounted renewals. If the standard price appeared earlier, contact the provider with that evidence and ask for the promotion terms to be reviewed.
The monthly price looks low but the service period is shorter
Confirm whether the offer renews every 28 days. Convert the price to an annual figure using the actual number of renewals rather than comparing it directly with a calendar-month plan.
Data becomes unusably slow
Check the account for a reached allowance, a speed cap or a fair-use trigger. Compare the cost of an add-on with moving to a higher allowance before the next renewal.

The number port fails
Keep the old service active and verify that the account name, number and identity details supplied to the new provider match the existing account. Ask the new provider to correct the mismatch and resubmit the port request.
The eSIM will not activate
Confirm eSIM support, install the latest handset software, use a stable Wi‑Fi connection and follow the provider’s activation instructions. Do not delete the old profile until you know which line is being replaced.
Coverage is weak indoors
Compare indoor and outdoor coverage on the provider’s map and test at the exact address. Wi‑Fi calling, if supported by both the handset and plan, may help, but it is a separate feature that must be verified.
Considering a signal booster
Do not install or promote a mobile repeater or booster in Australia. The ACCC says these devices are banned because they can cause serious interference to mobile networks. Use lawful options such as Wi‑Fi calling where available, or choose a provider with better coverage at the location.
How to use awards and comparison sites
Canstar’s 2026 Most Satisfied Customer categories listed Aussie Broadband for postpaid mobile plans, ALDI Mobile for prepaid mobile plans, Vodafone for phone-on-a-plan and SIM Corner for travel SIM and phone plans. These are customer-satisfaction results in specific categories; they do not establish the best coverage, speed or price for every address.
Comparison databases are useful for finding allowances and promotions, but provider terms can change quickly. Treat the listing as a shortlist, then read the provider’s own plan page and coverage information before paying. Confirm the date, eligibility, billing cycle and post-promotion price at checkout.
Which type of plan fits your situation?
| Your priority | What to look for | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest predictable spend | Prepaid renewal, a hard data stop or a clearly capped add-on. | A 28-day cycle can require more renewals per year than a monthly plan. |
| Minimal administration | Postpaid automatic billing and enough data for your highest normal month. | Review excess-data charges and the standard price after any discount. |
| Heavy streaming or hotspot use | A high allowance, hotspot permission and a stated speed policy. | Large data is wasted if coverage is congested where you use it. |
| Frequent international travel | Roaming countries, daily rates and international-call inclusions that match your destinations. | Domestic data allowances may not apply overseas. |
| Flexible switching | Month-to-month service, eSIM support and no handset repayment tied to the account. | Promotional prices may be limited to new customers or a fixed number of renewals. |
| Regional or indoor reliability | Address-level coverage checks, local testing and a provider with suitable network access. | National coverage claims do not predict performance inside a particular building. |
A simple shortlist method
- Write down your last three months of mobile-data use and your highest month.
- List the addresses and travel routes where service matters most.
- Remove any plan that lacks the required coverage, SIM type or international feature.
- Calculate the first-year and post-promotion cost using the actual renewal period.
- Compare speed limits, data banking, hotspot rules and extra-data pricing.
- Choose the cheapest plan that clears all of those requirements, then recheck the provider’s terms on the day you order.
For the dated examples above, the 30 GB offer has the lower calculated first-year cost, while the 40 GB offer provides more included data. That observation does not decide the purchase: the better value depends on your measured usage, local coverage, network conditions and the price that applies after the promotion.
