Audiobooks vs. Reading Print: Which Is Better for Comprehension and Memory?

Neither format is universally better. A 2022 meta-analysis of 46 studies involving 4,687 participants found no reliable overall comprehension difference between reading and listening. The better choice depends on what you need to remember, whether you can control the pace, the type of text, and your own attention and access needs.

Print has a modest advantage in some self-paced and inferential-comprehension comparisons, while literal-detail scores are essentially alike. A separate meta-analysis likewise found little difference in memory and comprehension between auditory and written presentation, including when tests were delayed. Audiobooks therefore can count as a legitimate way to engage with a book, but neither audio nor print guarantees learning by itself.

What the strongest comparisons actually found

The most direct synthesis is Virginia Clinton-Lisell’s 2022 meta-analysis, Listening Ears or Reading Eyes. It combined 46 studies and 4,687 participants that compared comprehension after reading and listening to comparable material. Across all conditions, the difference was small and not statistically reliable (Hedges’ g = 0.07, p = .23). In practical terms, the pooled results did not identify a dependable overall winner. Read the meta-analysis.

That average conceals meaningful differences in how the studies were run and what their tests measured. Reading performed modestly better when participants controlled their own pace, and it had clearer advantages on inferential and broad-comprehension measures. When the experimenter set the pace, the comparison did not produce a reliable reading advantage. The result is not “audio and print are identical”; it is that format alone explains little unless pace, outcome and audience are considered.

Results by pacing and comprehension measure

Comparison Finding What it means
All reading-versus-listening comparisons g = 0.07, p = .23 No reliable overall difference in the 46-study synthesis.
Self-paced reading conditions Reading favored, g = 0.13, p = .049 Being able to pause, reread or move at a chosen speed can modestly help print readers.
Experimenter-paced conditions Difference not significant, g = −0.32, p = .16 A fixed presentation pace did not produce a dependable winner in this analysis.
Inferential comprehension Reading favored, g = 0.36, p = .02 Print had an advantage when readers had to draw conclusions beyond stated details.
General comprehension Reading favored, g = 0.15, p = .05 A small edge appeared on broad understanding measures.
Literal comprehension g = −0.01, p = .93 Recall of explicitly stated information was essentially the same.

Effect sizes describe average differences across studies, not a guaranteed advantage for every person or book. A positive reading effect does not mean that every print reader will outperform every listener; it means that the average in that subgroup leaned toward reading.

What memory studies add

Comprehension and memory overlap, but they are not the same outcome. Someone may understand an argument during a session yet fail to recall its details later, or remember a fact without grasping its implications. Raymond A. Mar and colleagues’ 2021 meta-analysis examined memory and comprehension across narrative and expository texts. It covered more than 75 unique samples and over 33,000 participants. The primary finding was that stories were generally easier to understand and remember than essays, but the modality comparison itself showed little difference between auditory and written presentation.

For the reading-versus-listening comparisons, the reported difference was Gdiff = .07. When studies controlled text difficulty, it was .03; when they controlled content, it was .02. Immediate-versus-delayed testing produced a difference of .03. Those values are small, but they should not be treated as proof of exact equivalence: the authors note substantial heterogeneity, and a non-significant result can reflect limited sample sizes or variation among studies. See the meta-analysis of narrative and expository text.

The practical reading is cautious: print does not automatically create a stronger long-term memory trace, and audio does not automatically fade faster. The text’s structure, your attention, the test used and the time between study and test all matter. A delayed-recall result also cannot tell you how well you would remember a particular audiobook while commuting or doing chores, because those conditions were not uniformly tested.

Why self-pacing can change the result

Print presents information spatially and lets you set the next step. You can stop at a difficult sentence, scan back to a definition, compare two paragraphs on facing pages or move ahead when a passage is familiar. Audio normally unfolds in time. Even when an app provides pause, rewind and speed controls, you must notice that you lost the thread and take an action to recover it.

The 2022 synthesis found its modest reading advantage specifically in self-paced comparisons. That does not establish that every adjustable audiobook is inferior. It indicates that control over rate is a relevant design feature. A listener who pauses, replays a sentence and reduces speed may have more control than a print reader who keeps going without checking understanding. Conversely, a listener who cannot pause or who is reluctant to replay may be constrained by the narration’s timing.

Controls that make listening more self-paced

  • Pause at boundaries: stop after a section, scene or argument rather than letting the next passage overwrite your working memory.
  • Replay selectively: repeat a sentence or paragraph when a name, number, definition or logical link was missed.
  • Adjust speed for the task: use a comfortable rate for difficult exposition and a faster rate only when you are confident that details are not being lost.
  • Use chapter navigation: mark or note the location of material you expect to revisit.
  • Remove competing demands: comprehension depends on attention; if another activity requires language processing, postpone the audiobook or use a less demanding passage.

Listening while occupied with another task was not the central condition in the strongest comparisons summarized here. No precise percentage penalty can be assigned to multitasking from these findings. Treat divided-attention listening as a different situation, not as evidence that audiobooks themselves are ineffective.

“Comprehension” can mean different things

Before choosing a format, identify what you need to do with the material. A quiz asking for names and dates is not the same as an exam requiring you to infer an author’s assumption or explain an argument in your own words.

Outcome Typical task What the evidence suggests Useful format decision
Literal detail Identify information explicitly stated in the text. The cited comparison found no meaningful reading advantage (g = −0.01). Choose the medium that keeps your attention and makes review easy.
Inference Connect clues, identify implications or explain why a claim follows. Reading showed a moderate average advantage (g = 0.36). Prefer controllable print for close analysis, or make audio highly interactive with pauses and replays.
General understanding State the main point, structure or overall meaning. Reading had a small advantage (g = 0.15). Use print when you need to map structure; audio remains viable when it sustains attention.
Delayed memory Recall material after a time gap. A separate meta-analysis found little modality difference, with Gdiff = .03 for immediate versus delayed testing. Build in retrieval and review regardless of medium.

These categories should not be collapsed into a single score called “learning.” A format can be adequate for remembering plot events yet less convenient for comparing evidence across an expository chapter.

Audiobook-only listening versus reading while listening

Listening to an audiobook alone is not the same intervention as following the same words in print while hearing them. The combined approach adds visual text, which can support locating a passage and checking spelling or structure, but it also asks you to coordinate two streams.

Clinton-Lisell’s 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 30 eligible studies, 1,945 participants and 62 effect sizes on reading while listening compared with reading only. The combined condition had a trivial overall comprehension benefit over reading alone (g = .18, standard error .07, p = .01). The advantage was concentrated in experimenter-paced studies (g = .41, 95% confidence interval [.13, .70]) and was not reliable in self-paced reading (g = .06, 95% confidence interval [−.07, .19]). These results concern audio-assisted reading, not audiobook-only versus print. Read the audio-assisted reading review.

If you follow along with a printed or on-screen text, treat that as a distinct strategy. It may help you keep your place or revisit wording, but it is not evidence that every audiobook should be paired with a page. The right choice depends on whether visual tracking helps you or becomes another source of distraction.

Who is represented—and who is not—in the evidence

Audience and material limit how broadly the findings can be applied. Singh and Alexander’s 2022 review covered 32 documents and reported audiobook-only benefits in some samples of younger learners, with audio-plus-print benefits for some identified groups. It also noted that direct comparisons in older learners without identified needs, and comparisons using expository text, were relatively scarce. See the review’s scope and limitations.

That means a result from children learning to decode should not be presented as a universal rule for fluent adult readers. Similarly, a finding from a narrative story may not transfer to a technical chapter full of definitions, diagrams and nested arguments. Language background, decoding fluency, hearing or vision access, familiarity with the topic and the ability to control playback can all alter the practical outcome.

When access needs change the best choice

  • Print-related barriers: Audio can remove visual decoding or eye-strain demands and may make sustained engagement possible.
  • Audio-related barriers: Print provides a stable visual reference, easier backtracking and the option to inspect spelling, symbols, tables or quotations.
  • Second-language reading or listening: Select the mode in which vocabulary boundaries are easiest to notice, then pause to check unfamiliar terms.
  • Attention variability: Some readers focus better with a page; others maintain attention more reliably with narration. Your ability to stop and recover is more important than a format label.

Accessibility is not a consolation prize. If one mode lets you attend to the content while the other causes fatigue or loses your place, the accessible mode is the rational choice for that reader and task.

How to choose for common reading goals

For leisure and narrative books

Use the format you will actually finish with attention. The modality comparison in the large memory meta-analysis showed little difference, while stories were generally easier to understand and remember than essays. A compelling narrator can sustain attention; print can make it easier to glance back at a character or event. Neither feature guarantees recall, so pause at chapter breaks and occasionally state what happened in your own words.

For close study and exam preparation

Print is often the more efficient working surface because you can annotate, compare paragraphs and search for a term without waiting for a recording to reach it. The cited reading advantage for inferential and general comprehension also makes self-paced print a sensible default for dense arguments. An audiobook can still be useful for an initial pass, review or accessibility, provided you stop to retrieve the point rather than allowing the chapter to play continuously.

For technical or expository material

Expect more friction in either format than with a story. Definitions, equations, lists and cross-references benefit from a stable visual layout; audio can require frequent pauses and replays. Because direct evidence for older typical learners and expository texts is limited, do not infer that one mode will always win. Test a short section, then choose the mode that lets you explain the structure without looking back at every sentence.

For a long commute or exercise session

Audio may be the only practical option, but safety and attention come first. Use playback controls and accept that a distracted session may need a later, focused review. The available comparisons do not quantify a specific comprehension loss from commuting, driving or exercising, so do not treat a continuous play session as equivalent to a focused study session.

A practical audiobook method for comprehension and memory

The following routine turns listening into an active task without claiming that a particular app or device is required.

  1. Set a narrow goal. Decide whether you are listening for the plot, a chapter’s argument, a definition set or a few questions you need to answer.
  2. Preview the structure. Look at the title, chapter headings or table of contents when available. Knowing the map reduces the chance that a long passage becomes undifferentiated sound.
  3. Choose a sustainable speed. Start at the rate at which you can paraphrase the previous section. Increase or decrease it based on that check, not on a target number.
  4. Pause at meaningful boundaries. After a section, state the main point and one supporting detail aloud or in notes.
  5. Replay only the uncertain part. Rewind a sentence, name or transition instead of restarting an entire chapter.
  6. Retrieve without playback. At the end of a chapter, answer your goal question from memory before consulting notes.
  7. Schedule a short revisit. Reopen the chapter location when you need durable recall. The modality evidence does not make review optional; delayed memory depends on what you can retrieve later.

These steps address the main weakness of fixed-time presentation: information can continue while your understanding has stalled. They also make the session’s success observable—you can explain the material, not merely report that you finished it.

A practical print method

  1. Control the unit. Read one argument, scene or subsection at a time rather than setting an arbitrary page quota.
  2. Mark relationships, not every sentence. Note a definition, claim, evidence and conclusion so the page remains usable for review.
  3. Use deliberate rereading. Return to the sentence that supports an inference, then write the inference in your own words.
  4. Close the book for retrieval. Summarize the section without looking, list the key terms and identify what remains unclear.
  5. Review by question. Turn headings into questions and answer them later. This checks memory rather than recognition.

Print’s spatial stability is most valuable when you need to compare parts of a text. It is not a substitute for retrieval: rereading a familiar paragraph can feel fluent without proving that you can reproduce its meaning.

Common claims that need correction

“Audiobooks are not real reading.”

That is a category judgment, not a comprehension finding. Listening and visual reading are different ways of receiving language. The 46-study synthesis found no reliable overall comprehension gap, so audio should not be dismissed as inherently illegitimate. Whether it meets a particular assignment depends on the assignment’s required skills, such as interpreting typography, inspecting a diagram or quoting exact wording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Print always creates better memory.”

The memory meta-analysis did not support that blanket claim. Modality differences were small in its comparisons, including delayed tests. A print advantage can appear for self-paced or inferential tasks, but that is narrower than saying print always wins.

“Listening while following the text is just an audiobook.”

It is a separate condition. The 2023 review found a small overall benefit for reading while listening over reading alone, concentrated in experimenter-paced studies. That finding cannot be used to rank audiobook-only listening against print.

“A faster playback speed saves time without a cost.”

The cited studies do not establish a universal safe speed. Faster playback may be workable for familiar or simple material and counterproductive for dense passages. Judge it by your ability to explain and retrieve what you heard.

“One test score settles the question.”

Literal recall, inference, general understanding and delayed memory measure different things. A format decision should name the outcome rather than rely on a single generic word such as comprehension.

A decision framework

If your priority is… Start with… Adjust when…
Story enjoyment and completion The mode that keeps your attention and fits your schedule. Switch or combine modes when you lose plot details or stop engaging.
Inferring an argument Self-paced print, because reading showed an advantage on inferential measures. Use audio with frequent pauses and written retrieval if print is inaccessible.
Remembering explicit facts Either mode; literal-comprehension results were essentially similar. Add retrieval questions and targeted review.
Long-term retention Either mode with active recall and a later revisit. Choose the medium that makes review and control easiest.
Accessibility or fatigue The accessible mode that permits sustained attention. Use the other mode for selected sections or follow along when that helps.
Dense exposition Print or audio paired with a visible outline and frequent pauses. Change format if you cannot reconstruct the hierarchy of ideas.

Bottom line for “Do you remember more from reading or listening?”

Across the best direct comparisons available here, you should not expect a universal memory or comprehension winner. Reading has a modest edge in some self-paced, inferential and general-comprehension conditions; literal detail is essentially tied; and broader memory comparisons show only small modality differences, even with delayed testing. Choose the format that gives you attention and control, then use pauses, rereading, retrieval and review to turn exposure into understanding.
