Audio-Technica ATH-S220BT review: what the 60-hour wireless headphones really offer

Verdict: The Audio-Technica ATH-S220BT is a lightweight, closed-back on-ear Bluetooth headphone built around long advertised battery life, two-device multipoint pairing, a low-latency mode, and the option to use a cable. Its documented hardware is straightforward: Bluetooth 5.0, the SBC codec, 40 mm drivers, a built-in call microphone and an approximate 180 g weight. The headline battery figure is a manufacturer claim of up to approximately 60 hours of continuous music playback, not an independently measured result. That makes the ATH-S220BT most interesting for people who value endurance and simple device switching over advanced codecs or heavily documented performance testing.

Audio-Technica lists the model as discontinued in Japan, while regional pages can differ, so current stock, price and warranty support must be checked in your country before buying. The official Japanese product page is Audio-Technica’s ATH-S220BT listing; the Hong Kong product page is the regional product-information page.

Audio-Technica ATH-S220BT at a glance

The ATH-S220BT is a closed-back, on-ear wireless headphone released in Japan on June 25, 2021. It uses 40 mm dynamic drivers and connects over Bluetooth 5.0. Audio-Technica documents the SBC codec, a line-of-sight range of approximately 10 metres, and support for the A2DP, AVRCP, HFP and HSP Bluetooth profiles. A 1.2 m cable with an in-line microphone and remote is included for wired listening, and a USB-A to USB-C cable is supplied for charging.

Its defining promise is endurance: Audio-Technica states a maximum of approximately 60 hours of continuous music playback. The same documentation gives an approximate four-hour charging time. Both figures depend on operating conditions, so they should be treated as product claims rather than guarantees of a particular runtime in every use pattern.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The earcups sit on the ears rather than surrounding them. That keeps the design relatively compact and helps explain the approximately 180 g mass, but on-ear pressure and long-session comfort vary substantially from person to person. No independent fit, clamp-force, battery, latency, microphone or sound-quality measurements were established for this model.

The full operating details and safety information are in the ATH-S220BT user manual. The 5–32,000 Hz response, 105 dB/mW sensitivity and 32-ohm impedance are electrical or stated specifications; they do not predict a particular tonal balance, detail level or maximum comfortable volume.

Battery life: the headline number needs context

Audio-Technica’s maximum figure of approximately 60 hours is unusually useful if it holds for your routine. A commuter who listens for two hours on weekdays could theoretically go weeks between charges. Someone using the headphone for calls, at high volume, or in a busy wireless environment may see a different result. The manufacturer does not present the number as an independently verified laboratory measurement, and the product pages do not establish a typical runtime under a standardized test condition.

Charging is specified at approximately four hours. Plan that as a full-charge interval rather than assuming a short top-up will restore a large percentage. The supplied 30 cm USB-A to USB-C lead means you need a USB-A power source or an appropriate adapter; the cable itself is not a wall charger.

How to manage the battery

  • Charge before a long trip instead of relying on the maximum-runtime claim at the last minute.
  • Use the supplied USB-A-to-USB-C cable with a powered USB port or a compatible USB power adapter.
  • Keep the headphone powered off when it is not in use; multipoint convenience does not remove the need for normal power management.
  • If your actual runtime is dramatically shorter than expected, record volume, call time, wireless distance and temperature before treating it as a fault. Those variables affect battery consumption.

Bluetooth, codecs and connection range

Bluetooth 5.0 provides the radio connection, but it does not by itself guarantee a particular sound quality, latency or range in a room. Audio-Technica documents SBC as the codec for this model. The available documentation does not establish AAC, aptX, aptX Adaptive, LDAC or another higher-bandwidth codec, so a phone or computer that supports those formats will still negotiate the codec the headphone actually offers.

The stated range is approximately 10 m in line of sight. Walls, furniture, the placement of the source device and competing radio traffic can reduce usable distance. Treat 10 m as a manufacturer specification under favorable geometry, not as a promise that playback will remain uninterrupted throughout a house or office.

Basic first-time pairing

The exact button sequence is documented in the user manual, and menus differ between Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. In general, the process is:

  1. Charge the headphone sufficiently before setup.
  2. Put the ATH-S220BT into its Bluetooth-pairing state using the controls described in the manual.
  3. Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings and select the ATH-S220BT from the available-device list.
  4. Confirm the connection, then play a short test track and make a call to verify both playback and the microphone.
  5. For a second source, follow the manual’s multipoint procedure rather than repeatedly deleting the first pairing.

If the name does not appear, turn Bluetooth off and on at the source, move the headphone closer, and remove an old ATH-S220BT entry before trying again. These are standard recovery steps; the manual remains the authority for the model’s indicator behavior and button timing.

Multipoint pairing: useful for two-device routines

Audio-Technica advertises multipoint pairing for two simultaneous devices. Its Hong Kong product description says, “Multipoint pairing allows you to connect to two devices, such as a smartphone and PC, simultaneously.” This is useful when a phone handles calls while a laptop handles music or video, because you can keep both devices connected instead of manually pairing every time you switch.

The claim establishes simultaneous connection support, not a measured switching time or a guarantee that every application will hand over audio identically. Operating systems and individual apps decide how they seize the active audio path. A practical setup is to pair the headphone with the phone and computer, start media on one device, pause it before answering on the other, and test your own call workflow before relying on it for meetings.

When multipoint may not behave as expected

  • A device can remain connected for control or calls while another source owns media playback.
  • Some computers suspend Bluetooth services when sleeping, which can make the second connection appear to disappear.
  • Video-conference software may select a different microphone or speaker than the system default.
  • Re-pairing both sources can clear a confused connection, but it also removes the convenience of an already stored pairing.

Because no independent switching test was established, do not choose the ATH-S220BT solely on the assumption of instant, universal hand-off. Verify the behavior with the phone, computer and apps you actually use.

Low-latency mode for video and games

Audio-Technica advertises a low-latency mode intended for video and games. That description tells you the purpose of the mode, but the available documentation does not provide a latency figure, test method or comparison with the normal Bluetooth mode. Bluetooth delay can also vary by source device, operating system, game engine and codec path.

Use the low-latency mode when lip-sync or control timing matters, then check a familiar video and a game you know well. If a source offers its own audio-delay adjustment, that setting may still be necessary. Do not treat the marketing label as proof of a particular millisecond performance.

Fit, weight and everyday comfort

At approximately 180 g, the ATH-S220BT is light on paper for a wireless headphone. Its on-ear construction places the pads on the outer ear instead of enclosing it. That can make the headphone easier to pack and less bulky than an over-ear design, while also creating a different pressure pattern. Ear size, glasses, hairstyle, head shape and sensitivity to clamp all affect comfort.

No independent comfort trial, clamp-force measurement or long-session wear test was established. The sensible way to judge fit is to buy from a seller with a workable return policy, wear it for a realistic session and check for pressure on the pinnae, heat buildup and movement when walking. A light specification alone cannot settle those questions.

The closed-back construction may help reduce some direct sound leakage compared with an open-back headphone, but the documents do not quantify isolation or claim active noise cancellation. Do not assume it will provide the isolation of a dedicated noise-cancelling model.

Wired fallback and included accessories

The included 1.2 m cable has an in-line microphone and remote. This gives you a way to continue listening when Bluetooth is unavailable or when you want to preserve wireless battery power. The microphone and remote are part of the supplied cable, so wired call behavior depends on the source device’s connector and compatibility as well as the cable.

Inside the package, Audio-Technica lists:

  • ATH-S220BT headphones
  • 30 cm USB-A to USB-C charging cable
  • 1.2 m cable with in-line microphone and remote

Audio-Technica also identifies HP-S220BT replacement earpads and a microphone cable as separate accessories. Availability and pricing for those parts can vary by country, so check the local support channel before assuming a replacement is in stock.

Calls and voice assistants

The product pages advertise calls through the built-in microphone and access to a voice assistant. The Bluetooth profile list includes HFP and HSP, which are the hands-free and headset profiles used for call audio. However, no independent microphone-quality test, noise-rejection measurement or speech-intelligibility score was established.

For an important meeting, make a short recording or test call first. Confirm that the operating system has selected the ATH-S220BT microphone rather than the laptop’s built-in microphone, and check whether the application changes audio quality when it enters call mode. The headphone can offer the relevant function without delivering broadcast-quality speech in every environment.

What the specifications do—and do not—tell you about sound

The 40 mm driver, 5–32,000 Hz stated response, 105 dB/mW sensitivity and 32-ohm impedance describe the hardware’s declared operating characteristics. They do not establish whether the headphone sounds bass-forward, neutral, bright, detailed or smooth. Frequency-response endpoints especially should not be read as a listening-quality score.

No named independent reviewer, laboratory measurement or comparative listening result was established for this model in the available evidence. A responsible buying decision therefore rests on the documented features, your fit preferences and the return/support terms available in your region, rather than on an invented sound signature.

Regional availability, colors and support

The Japanese product page lists the ATH-S220BT as discontinued in Japan and gives June 25, 2021 as the Japanese release date. That status is geographically limited; it does not prove that every market has discontinued stock. The Hong Kong listing shows a different regional assortment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Four Japanese-market color/model codes are listed: BK, BRD, NBG and WH. The Hong Kong page lists BK, NBG and WH. Color availability is therefore regional, and a color shown on one country’s page may not be sold by a local retailer.

Before ordering, verify three items with a local seller or Audio-Technica support:

  1. Whether the exact ATH-S220BT model is new, refurbished or remaining old stock.
  2. The current price, return period and warranty territory.
  3. Whether replacement earpads and the microphone cable can be obtained in your country.

Because the model launched in 2021 and is marked discontinued in Japan, after-sales support and spare-part access deserve as much attention as the feature list.

How to decide whether the ATH-S220BT fits your use

It makes sense when you prioritize

  • A lightweight on-ear form rather than an over-ear seal.
  • A manufacturer-rated maximum of approximately 60 hours between charges.
  • Connection to a phone and computer at the same time.
  • A low-latency mode for video or games, with the understanding that performance is not independently measured here.
  • A supplied cable for wired listening and a replaceable-pad path listed by the manufacturer.
  • Simple SBC Bluetooth operation instead of a requirement for advanced codecs.

Look more carefully when you require

  • Verified all-day comfort for a particular ear shape or strong clamp preference.
  • Independent battery-runtime, latency or microphone measurements.
  • A documented AAC, aptX or LDAC option.
  • Quantified active noise cancellation, water resistance or environmental sealing.
  • A guaranteed local supply of a discontinued or older model.

Comparison checklist for alternatives

If you are comparing the ATH-S220BT with another headphone, use like-for-like evidence rather than assuming a larger specification number means a better experience.

Common pitfalls and practical fixes

Expecting 60 hours in every situation

The 60-hour figure is a maximum continuous-music claim. If your usage includes frequent calls, high volume or difficult radio conditions, runtime can differ. Track your own charge interval before deciding that the battery is defective.

Assuming Bluetooth 5.0 means high-resolution audio

Bluetooth version and codec are separate. This model’s documented codec is SBC. A Bluetooth 5.0 source does not add AAC, aptX or LDAC support to the headphone.

Buying for fit without a return plan

On-ear pressure is personal. Confirm the retailer’s return terms and test the headphone for the length of session you actually expect to use.

Relying on multipoint without testing your workflow

Pair both devices, then test music, an incoming call and a video meeting. App and operating-system behavior can determine which source takes priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming low latency is quantified

The feature is advertised, but no millisecond result is established. Check synchronization and game response with your own equipment.

Final assessment

The ATH-S220BT is a focused, older wireless design rather than a specification-heavy flagship. Its strongest documented advantages are the light approximately 180 g body, a claimed maximum of approximately 60 hours of playback, two-device multipoint, a low-latency mode and a supplied wired cable. Its clearest qualifications are equally important: SBC is the only documented codec, the 60-hour figure is conditional and unmeasured here, comfort is inherently personal, and Japanese availability is marked discontinued.

Choose it when those practical features match your routine and local support is satisfactory. Pass on it—or compare more carefully—if you need independently verified performance, advanced codec support, measured noise cancellation, or guaranteed current stock in your region.
