It weighs 612 g, offers no built-in microphone or strong passive isolation, and comes in revisions that may not sound alike. Those details matter more to a buying decision than an unverified claim that it is the best headphone for everyone.
What the LCD-X is—and what it is not
Audeze describes the LCD-X as an over-ear, open-back planar magnetic headphone. Its open construction is intended to support a natural soundstage and spatial positioning, according to the manufacturer; that design also lets sound escape and outside noise in. It should not be treated as an isolating headphone for a noisy room or a shared space where leakage would bother others. Audeze LCD-X product page

The LCD-X is a headphone, not a gaming headset with a built-in microphone. For multiplayer chat, plan on a separate microphone or another chat solution. Its wired connection and open-back presentation may appeal to someone who prioritizes listening immersion over headset convenience, but that is a use-case fit, not evidence of a gaming advantage.

Does the LCD-X need an amplifier?
Not automatically. Audeze’s power guidance gives you a way to check whether your existing source is a sensible match, but it does not establish that every listener needs to buy a separate amplifier. Look up the output capability of the specific computer, interface, controller, or amplifier you intend to use; then consider your listening level and whether the source can drive the headphones cleanly and loudly enough. Audeze lists a minimum recommended power level above 100 mW and a recommended level above 250 mW, but the suitable setup depends on the source and listener. Audeze LCD-X product page

How does the LCD-X soundstage compare?
Soundstage is a listening judgment, not a guarantee of accurate game positioning. A Headphones.com review of the 2021 revision describes the LCD-X as spacious, while judging its soundstage less impressive than the HD800S or Arya in that reviewer’s comparison. That assessment is one reviewer’s impression; it is not a controlled gaming test or a universal ranking. Headphones.com review of the 2021 revision

For gaming, distinguish an expansive or immersive presentation from imaging—the perceived placement of individual sounds. The available sources do not establish controlled positional accuracy or a competitive edge for the LCD-X. Results will depend on the game’s mix, the player, the source, and the listening environment.

Is the LCD-X good for gaming?
It can be a reasonable choice for someone who wants a wired, open-back headphone for immersive play and already has a workable chat-microphone setup. It is less suitable if you need wireless convenience, integrated voice chat, isolation from household noise, or minimal sound leakage. Audeze separately markets the LCD-GX as a gaming headset, with design positioning around reduced weight and marathon gaming sessions; that positioning does not prove it outperforms the LCD-X for every player. Audeze LCD-GX product page
- For competitive play: prioritize your own experience with the game’s positional mix; no supplied evidence establishes an LCD-X competitive advantage.
- For single-player immersion: an open presentation may be appealing if your room is quiet and leakage is acceptable.
- For team chat: account for the separate microphone requirement before choosing it over a headset.
- For shared or noisy rooms: open-back construction is a meaningful drawback.
Comfort and long-session fit
At Audeze’s listed 612 g, weight is a substantial fit consideration. Whether the LCD-X remains comfortable over a long session depends on the individual and should be checked in person if possible; the specification alone cannot predict comfort. If you are sensitive to heavier headphones, include that consideration alongside sound quality rather than assuming the open-back design makes the weight irrelevant. Audeze LCD-X product page

Which LCD-X revision are you buying?
Revision matters when comparing reviews or shopping second-hand. RTINGS’ review page, updated June 23, 2026, says units produced before 2021 have a different frequency response, including a large dip around 4 kHz. That means an older review or used-unit impression should not automatically be treated as representative of a later production unit. Check the unit’s production or revision details with the seller, and compare it with reviews that identify which version they assessed. RTINGS Audeze LCD-X review
Who should consider the LCD-X?
- Consider it if you want a wired open-back headphone, can tolerate the weight, have a quiet enough listening environment, and value music or immersive listening alongside gaming.
- Look elsewhere if you need strong isolation, wireless operation, an integrated microphone, or a lightweight headset for long sessions.
- Check before buying whether your source is suitable under Audeze’s power guidance and which LCD-X revision is being offered.
Audeze’s product page also quotes Tycho’s Scott Hansen: “The LCD-X are the first headphones I’ve found with the accuracy, low frequency response and soundstage to truly replace a studio monitoring environment.” This is a customer testimonial hosted by the manufacturer, not an independent test result.
