The available official data do not confirm that an AUD/USD rally was losing steam on 7 October 2026. The latest Reserve Bank of Australia reference rate located is US$0.6933 per Australian dollar at 4pm on 2 October; it is not a 7 October quote. A dated market update does establish that the Australian dollar weakened broadly in September, but that alone cannot verify an intraday signal.
What the available figures show
AUD/USD expresses the number of US dollars one Australian dollar buys. For example, a quote of 0.70 means A$1 is worth US$0.70. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) explains this convention and how exchange rates affect trade and financial flows in its exchange-rate explainer.

The RBA’s homepage reports AUD/USD at US$0.6933 per A$1 as at 4pm on 2 October 2026. The same display reports a 4.60% cash-rate target effective 30 September 2026. These are dated reference figures, not evidence of the pair’s price or direction on 7 October. The RBA says daily exchange-rate data are released on weekdays after 4pm; check the observation time when comparing a reference rate with a live or broker quote. What September’s weakness does—and does not—establish
In a September summary published on 1 October, Western Australian Treasury Corporation (WATC) said the Australian dollar weakened against all G10 currencies during the month and that the trade-weighted index fell to its lowest level since June. This supports a broad September weakening backdrop. It does not establish an AUD/USD support level, a reversal, or a loss of momentum on 7 October. WATC
How to test whether a rally is losing steam
“Losing steam” is a technical interpretation, so it needs dated price evidence and a stated chart interval. A current, timestamped chart or price series is needed to verify the 7 October claim; without one, specific highs, lows, percentage moves, indicator readings, or reversal confirmation cannot be responsibly supplied.
- Check price structure: Compare the latest swing high and low with prior ones, and assess whether the session close held above a claimed breakout or fell back from an intraday extreme.
- Specify the timeframe: A move that looks weaker on an hourly chart may not indicate a change on a daily chart. State the interval and observation time behind the signal.
- Use indicators as evidence, not a verdict: If citing an indicator, name it, give its dated reading and timeframe, and explain what would contradict the interpretation.
- Separate a pause from a reversal: Slowing gains or a pullback alone does not establish that an uptrend has ended.
Why central-bank policy matters, but does not settle the forecast
The RBA’s 4.60% cash-rate target is one part of the AUD/USD context, not a standalone forecast. Exchange rates can respond to the relative expected paths of Australian and US interest rates: what markets expect after a decision, and whether that decision was already anticipated, may matter more than the headline rate change. The RBA’s September 2026 decision raised its target to 4.60%; that decision and a subsequent currency move do not by themselves prove cause and effect. Global trade concerns, commodity exposure and broader US-dollar conditions can also shape the pair. The RBA discusses interest-rate differentials and global trade concerns as relevant exchange-rate context; these factors do not determine the direction of any single session. The Bank also states: “The Reserve Bank does not target exchange rates, but it does take them into account when setting monetary policy.” RBA exchange-rate explainer

Which official data can confirm a move?
The RBA’s weekday reference series provides dated daily observations after 4pm, while the US Federal Reserve’s H.10 release is weekly and reports daily bilateral exchange rates and US-dollar indexes for the previous business week. H.10 can help check completed sessions, but it is not an intraday feed and may not capture a developing move on 7 October. Federal Reserve H.10 release
