Short answer: AI models do not pay attention in the human, conscious sense. In a Transformer, “attention” is a mathematical operation that assigns weights to token representations and combines their information. Human attention is a cognitive process inferred from behavior and physiology, including eye movements during reading. The two can be compared because both involve giving some information more relative weight for a task, but the resemblance does not make their mechanisms identical or show that a model has subjective experience.
A 2024 study found that selected Transformer attention patterns correlated with eye-tracking measures in one anaphora-resolution task. The strength of that relationship changed with the model family, layer, gaze measure, and aggregation method. That is evidence of task-specific alignment between measurements—not proof that AI attends, understands, or experiences language as a person does.

What does “attention” mean in AI?
Transformer attention is a computation over vectors. Text is split into tokens, and each token is represented numerically. In a self-attention layer, the representation at one position produces a query. Representations at positions being consulted produce keys and values. The model compares the query with the keys, converts those scores into normalized weights, and uses the weights to combine the value vectors. The combined result contributes to a new, context-sensitive representation.

In practical terms, a token can receive a larger weight from another token when the learned calculation considers that information useful for the current update. Multiple attention heads use different learned projections, so one head may emphasize a syntactic relation while another captures a different pattern. Layers repeat and transform these operations, gradually building representations used for prediction or another task.

This is why “the model assigns a higher attention weight to river when updating bank” is more accurate than “the model is interested in river.” In Jakob Uszkoreit’s Google Research explanation, the sentence “I arrived at the bank after crossing the river” illustrates how the model may give “river” a high score when updating “bank,” helping represent the riverbank sense. The calculation is an information-weighting operation, not an observation of awareness.
Uszkoreit summarizes the architecture this way: “In each step, it applies a self-attention mechanism which directly models relationships between all words in a sentence, regardless of their respective position.” “Directly models relationships” describes the mathematical connectivity in the layer; it does not mean the system has a human-like mental focus.
Self-attention is not one universal score
A Transformer has many heads and layers, each with its own learned projections. The value in a heat map therefore depends on which head, layer, tokenization, direction, and aggregation rule are being displayed. A visualization of one head is not a single attention reading for the entire model. Decoder models also apply masking so a token cannot use future generated tokens, while encoder-decoder systems use separate self-attention and cross-attention operations.
Do AI models pay attention like humans?
Only in a limited, task-level analogy. Both a model and a person can be described as allocating relative importance to information while carrying out a task. The underlying processes are different. Model weights arise from learned projections, matrix operations, and normalization. Human attention is a cognitive process inferred through behavior and physiology; it is not directly visible as one numerical series.
During reading, researchers commonly use eye tracking to record where a person looks and for how long. Measures include total reading time, gaze duration, and the number of fixations on a word. These observations are useful proxies for aspects of visual engagement, but they are affected by reading difficulty, expectations, visual layout, and the reader’s task. A fixation is not a complete readout of thought, and a word can influence comprehension without receiving a simple, isolated gaze signal.

Comparing a model’s attention weights with human gaze therefore compares two selected measurements. It can reveal overlap under specified conditions, but it cannot establish that the mechanisms are the same.
Transformer attention and human reading attention compared
| Dimension | Transformer attention | Human reading attention |
|---|---|---|
| What is measured | Computed scores or weights and their effect on vector representations in a selected layer and head | Eye movements and reading behavior, such as fixation counts, gaze duration, and total reading time |
| How it is produced | Learned projections, score calculations, normalization, and value-vector combinations | Cognitive activity inferred through behavioral and physiological observations |
| What it can support | A description of how information is weighted in one model operation | Evidence about where and how a person visually engages with text during a task |
| What it cannot establish alone | A complete causal explanation of an answer, consciousness, or human-like understanding | A complete account of cognition from gaze alone |
| Appropriate comparison | A task-specific analysis that names the model, layer, head, tokenization, and aggregation | The same task with specified participants, gaze measures, and analytic choices |
The table is a practical way to keep the analogy bounded. Neither column is a single, context-free quantity. The meaning of a result depends on how the measurement was obtained and what question it was designed to answer.

What the 2024 human-versus-model study actually tested
The paper “Transformer Attention vs Human Attention in Anaphora Resolution,” published in the Association for Computational Linguistics Anthology in 2024, examined a narrow question: whether selected attention patterns in Transformer models relate to human eye-tracking behavior when resolving anaphora. Anaphora resolution is the task of linking a pronoun or other anaphoric expression to its antecedent, such as determining what “she” or “it” refers to.
For people, the study used reading data including total reading time, gaze duration, and fixation counts. The researchers normalized and aggregated word-level gaze observations to create relative measures. For models, they analyzed selected attention scores from BERT-, RoBERTa-, and T5-based configurations across layers and aggregation choices.
The relationship changed with architecture and analysis
The reported correlations were not uniform. Some first-layer BERT-based comparisons were stronger, while some T5 and RoBERTa comparisons were moderate. The study also reports that task-specific fine-tuning did not consistently improve the correlation. Those results mean that architecture, layer, task setup, and aggregation method all matter; there is no single “human-likeness” value for Transformer attention.

One exact result illustrates the point. The authors report a maximum Spearman rank correlation of ρ = 0.771 for mBERT-base using row aggregation against fixation counts. The same results table reports ρ = 0.601 for a mean-aggregation comparison in ruBERT-base against fixation counts. Each number belongs to its named model, aggregation method, gaze measure, language setting, and anaphora-resolution experiment. Neither is a general score for AI-human similarity.
A rank correlation indicates that two ordered sets tend to move together under the study’s conditions. It does not say that one process causes the other, that the model uses the same cues as a reader, or that the model has acquired human cognition. A correlation can arise because a model and readers both respond to properties of the text, because the task encourages similar outputs, or because the chosen measurement captures only one portion of each system’s behavior.
What the study does not show
- It does not show that a model experiences attention, awareness, or a point of view.
- It does not establish human-like understanding of language.
- It does not prove that every layer or head behaves like a reader’s gaze.
- It does not show that the same relationship holds for other languages, tasks, model families, prompts, or generation settings.
- It does not turn eye tracking into a direct measurement of all human thought.
The proper conclusion is narrower: under a particular anaphora-resolution setup, selected model attention measurements showed statistical alignment with selected eye-tracking measurements. That is a useful empirical finding, not an equivalence between minds and networks.
Can an AI model focus on words the way a person does?
A model can condition its next computation on information from particular positions, and its attention weights can indicate how strongly those positions contribute to a selected update. A person can shift gaze, reread a word, use expectations, and integrate visual, linguistic, and world knowledge. The shared language of “focus” hides those differences.
Human reading is also dynamic. A reader may look briefly at an easy function word, spend longer on an unexpected term, skip text, or return to an earlier phrase. Gaze behavior reflects both visual sampling and higher-level decisions. Model attention, by contrast, is generated every time the specified layer performs its calculation. It has no eyes, visual field, fatigue, intention, or subjective report.

For that reason, use wording such as “the model assigns a higher weight to this token in this layer” or “the selected weights correlate with fixation counts.” Avoid saying that the model literally looks at, notices, or thinks about a word unless the metaphor is immediately translated into the underlying operation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do attention weights show what an AI is thinking?
No. An attention map shows weights in a selected part of a model, not a complete explanation of its answer. It can help researchers inspect information flow, compare conditions, and form hypotheses. It cannot by itself prove that a highlighted token caused the output or reveal every computation that contributed to it.
Why a heat map is incomplete
Attention is only one operation among many. The output also depends on value transformations, residual connections, layer normalization, feed-forward networks, other heads and layers, the tokenization scheme, and the final prediction mechanism. A token can receive a large attention weight while its value contributes little useful information; conversely, information can be carried through pathways that are not visually prominent in one map.
Aggregation can hide differences as well. Averaging heads or layers may produce a smooth picture that no individual component actually uses. Selecting the most visually striking head after inspecting many maps can also create a misleading impression of explanatory power.

Gino Brunner and colleagues, in “On Identifiability in Transformers,” analyze when attention weights and contextual embeddings can be identified from a model’s behavior. They report that, in their formulation, attention weights are not identifiable for sequences longer than the attention-head dimension. Their conclusion is direct: “Overall, we show that self-attention distributions are not directly interpretable and present tools to better understand and further investigate Transformer models.”
Best Value
This is not the same as saying attention visualizations are useless. They can provide evidence about how a model operation behaves and can guide further tests. The responsible interpretation is that a heat map is a clue requiring corroboration, not a transcript of reasoning.
How to read an attention visualization responsibly
- Name the object being visualized. Record the model, layer, head, direction of attention, tokenization, and whether the display shows raw, averaged, or otherwise aggregated weights.
- Define the task and input. A pattern found during anaphora resolution may not apply to translation, question answering, summarization, or free-form generation.
- Separate association from causation. A high weight identifies a contribution in that operation; it does not prove that removing the token would change the answer.
- Run intervention or ablation checks where possible. Masking, patching, or selectively altering components can test whether the apparent signal matters, although such tests also require careful controls.
- Compare multiple components. Inspect relevant layers and heads rather than choosing one attractive map. Report the aggregation rule and selection procedure.
- Use complementary evidence. Compare attention with input perturbations, gradients, probing, behavior, or output changes. No single visualization should carry the entire explanation.
- State the limits. Say exactly which model operation and example the figure describes, and avoid extending it to consciousness or general intelligence.
Why the Transformer’s original success does not answer the human-attention question
The original Transformer architecture, introduced by Vaswani and colleagues in 2017, replaced recurrence in its core sequence-processing design with attention-based mechanisms. Its historical WMT 2014 benchmark results included a BLEU score of 28.4 for English-to-German and 41.0 for English-to-French as reported on the Google Research paper landing page. Those figures document the architecture’s translation performance at that time; they are not current state-of-the-art claims and do not measure human attention.
Performance can show that a model is useful for a task. It cannot establish that the internal process resembles a person’s conscious reading. A system may achieve a strong score through statistical structure that differs substantially from the strategies used by humans.

The practical takeaway
Transformer attention and human attention share a useful metaphor: both discussions can ask which information receives relative weight while a task is being performed. The analogy stops there unless a study specifies the task, measurement, model, layer, participants, and analysis.
For readers evaluating an AI explanation, treat attention weights as model-internal measurements, not mental states. For researchers comparing AI and people, treat eye tracking and model attention as different observables that may correlate under controlled conditions. The 2024 anaphora-resolution findings show that such comparisons can produce meaningful, architecture-sensitive results. They do not show that a model sees, feels, concentrates, or thinks in the human sense.
