Neither AT&T nor Verizon is an automatic winner for income investors. AT&T currently states an annualized dividend of $1.11 per share and forecasts at least $18 billion in 2026 free cash flow. Verizon declared a quarterly dividend of $0.7075 per share in September 2026 and reported $10.2 billion in first-half free cash flow. Those figures point to different trade-offs, but they do not establish which stock has the higher current yield or guarantee either company’s future dividends.
Dividend rates: what each company has declared
AT&T’s 2025 annual report records common dividends of $1.11 per share in both 2024 and 2025. Its second-quarter 2026 results said the company expected to maintain an annualized dividend of $1.11 per share. AT&T’s 2025 annual report also explains that its dividend policy considers shareholder expectations, funding requirements and long-term growth opportunities.

Verizon declared a quarterly dividend of $0.7075 per share in September 2026, unchanged from the prior quarter. If that rate were maintained for four quarters, it would total $2.83 per share over a year. A future dividend is not assured by that calculation: each distribution remains subject to board action. Verizon’s September 2026 announcement describes the company’s approach to returning capital, but management statements are not a guarantee of future payments.

AT&T’s quarterly result and Verizon’s six-month result cover different periods, so they are not a like-for-like cash-flow comparison. Both companies report free cash flow, a non-GAAP measure; definitions and adjustments can differ by issuer. The leverage figures also use different company-defined measures and assumptions. AT&T’s estimate reflects transactions and a future deleveraging path, while Verizon’s is a reported quarter-end ratio. Treat them as context for each company rather than directly comparable scores. What the capital-return plans mean for dividend income
AT&T planned at least $45 billion in shareholder returns across 2026–2028 through dividends and share repurchases. Verizon reported returning $9.4 billion in total capital in the first half of 2026 and raised its full-year share-buyback target to as much as $4.5 billion. These are broader capital-allocation figures, not dividend amounts. Buybacks do not put cash directly into an investor’s account in the way a dividend does.
For an income-focused investor, the relevant evidence is the declared dividend and the cash and debt context around it. Verizon’s 2025 full-year results reported $20.1 billion in free cash flow and $11.5 billion in cash dividend payments during 2025; those historical figures provide context, not a forecast of future coverage. The figures appear in its 2025 fourth-quarter and full-year earnings release filed with the SEC.

Which stock may fit your priorities?
AT&T may suit investors focused on its stated dividend and cash-flow target
AT&T’s published annualized dividend is $1.11 per share, alongside a 2026 free-cash-flow outlook of at least $18 billion. An investor considering AT&T should also account for management’s expectation that leverage would rise to about 3.2x after the Lumen and EchoStar transactions, with a return toward the 2.5x target range over roughly three years after the EchoStar transaction closes. These are outlooks and transaction-dependent expectations, not completed outcomes.

Verizon reported $10.2 billion in first-half 2026 free cash flow, 16% above the year-earlier period, raised its full-year free-cash-flow-growth guidance to 9%–10%, and reported a 2.5x net-unsecured-debt-to-adjusted-EBITDA ratio at second-quarter end. Its September dividend declaration set a quarterly rate of $0.7075 per share. These disclosures may be useful to investors assessing cash generation and debt, but do not establish that Verizon’s dividend is risk-free.

Why the dividend per share does not identify the higher-yield stock
Dividend yield is the annualized dividend divided by the share price. The per-share rates above cannot, by themselves, show which stock has the higher current yield: that comparison requires both share prices from the same date as well as the applicable annualized dividend rates. The cited company announcements do not provide a matched-date price comparison, so a current-yield winner cannot be established from them. Check a reliable quote source for both tickers on the same date before comparing yields; a yield based on an older price may no longer describe the current market.

- Decide what “income” means for you. If you need cash distributions, compare declared dividends rather than total shareholder returns or buyback targets.
- Compare yields using matched-date prices. Divide each company’s annualized dividend rate by its share price on the same date; do not infer yield from the raw per-share dividend amounts.
- Assess the cash-flow evidence in its reporting period. AT&T’s cited figure is a second-quarter amount and full-year outlook; Verizon’s recent amount covers the first half and its guidance is stated as year-over-year growth.
- Consider debt and execution risk. AT&T’s leverage outlook depends on transactions and subsequent deleveraging; Verizon’s reported ratio is a quarter-end measure with a different definition.
- Review updated filings before investing. Dividend declarations, forecasts, prices and company-defined financial measures can change. Verizon’s financial reporting page links to reports, filings, dividend history and debt schedules.
