Neither AT&T nor Verizon is the better choice for everyone. Start by checking service at your home, workplace and regular routes, then compare the full cost and features for the same number of lines. Use the FCC map to narrow the options, but verify coverage in person: its mobile map describes expected outdoor or in-vehicle service, not indoor reception.

Which carrier has better coverage where you live?

Coverage depends on the specific address, route and device—not just a nationwide ranking. Check the places you use your phone most: home, work, school, regular travel corridors and frequent destinations. A carrier that performs well across the country may still have a weak spot in a particular building or neighborhood.

Use the FCC map as a first check

On the FCC National Broadband Map, open the mobile coverage layer and compare AT&T and Verizon for your locations. The map includes reported 3G, 4G and 5G coverage; its 5G layers use 7/1 Mbps and 35/3 Mbps thresholds. It distinguishes outdoor stationary coverage from in-vehicle coverage. The FCC describes these areas as places where a consumer should be able to connect outdoors or in a moving vehicle, so the map does not establish whether service will reach inside your home or office. See the FCC’s mobile coverage map guidance for details.

Check each carrier’s own map, then test locally

Carrier maps provide another view, but they reflect each provider’s own reported coverage. Verizon’s coverage map lets you check an address and distinguish 5G Ultra Wideband, 5G and 4G LTE service. AT&T’s coverage map shows its reported 5G, 4G LTE and partner coverage. Treat either map as a screening tool rather than a promise of indoor performance.

If possible, test with a phone on each network in the places that matter to you, including indoors and at busy times. If the FCC map shows coverage that you are not receiving outdoors or in a vehicle, the agency explains how to challenge reported information using its Mobile Speed Test App in its map FAQ.

What do network-performance figures tell you?

Independent measurements can help compare specific aspects of service, but they describe a defined period and metric—not what you will experience at one address. Opensignal’s January 2026 U.S. Mobile Network Experience report covers September 1 through November 29, 2025. Its summary reports that AT&T users had a 3G-or-better connection 99.6% of the time, compared with 99.5% for Verizon users. The same summary says Verizon led for 5G Video Experience, 5G Live Video Experience and Coverage Experience. These findings are not contradictory: the measures assess different aspects of network experience. Review the report’s methodology before using any one figure to guide a local decision.

Carrier population-coverage claims are also not directly comparable with one another or with measured user experience. AT&T reports 5G population coverage for over 316 million people, contingent on a compatible plan and device; Verizon reports 4G LTE coverage for more than 99% of the U.S. population. Those claims refer to different technologies and measures, so they do not establish which carrier will work better for you.

How should you compare plan prices and features?

Compare the bill for the same number of lines and a similar pattern of use. A low advertised price may depend on eligibility, a limited-time promotion, or a particular plan tier. Prices, plan names and benefits change, so check each carrier’s current plan details and broadband nutrition label, then confirm the amount shown at checkout.

  • Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
  • Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

For each option, record:

  • The recurring charge for all lines and how long any promotion lasts, including eligibility requirements.
  • Taxes, fees, device payments and add-ons, separately from the advertised plan price.
  • Premium-data terms and any limits that may affect service during congestion.
  • Included hotspot data and what happens when the allowance is used.
  • International calling, texting and data features that match the places you travel.

Plan structure and the tier attached to features such as premium 5G access, hotspot data and international service can differ. Verizon’s AT&T vs. Verizon comparison guide discusses these considerations, but it is carrier-authored, not a neutral or exhaustive price survey. Check the current terms directly with both carriers before deciding.

Will your current phone work after switching?

Switching carriers does not automatically mean you need a new phone, but compatibility depends on the exact model and the network features you expect to use. Check the phone’s model number—not just its brand or the fact that it is described as 5G—against the carrier’s current compatibility requirements.

Verizon says not all 5G devices support both its high-band and mid-band spectrum. It lists n77 (C-band), n260 and n261 (mmWave) for access to the full 5G Ultra Wideband network; consult its coverage and device information for current details. AT&T also conditions coverage on having a compatible device and plan, as noted on its coverage page. If your phone is incompatible with the carrier or features you need, compare the cost of replacing it with the cost of staying on your current network.

When does a home-internet bundle change the decision?

If a mobile plan is more attractive when paired with home internet, check availability at your exact address. Eligibility can vary between nearby homes, and a bundle is useful only if the home service is available where you live and its combined cost suits your needs. Verizon says availability depends on address and local factors; check its coverage and availability information rather than assuming a nearby address qualifies.

A practical way to choose

  1. Map your real locations: Compare both carriers on the FCC mobile map for home, work and regular routes, then consult the carrier maps for address-specific detail.
  2. Verify the weak spots: Test service in person where possible, especially indoors and along routes where reliable access matters.
  3. Match plans to your use: Compare the same number of lines and account for hotspot, international use, premium-data terms, taxes, fees and device payments.
  4. Check your phone: Confirm the exact model supports the network and 5G features you expect before switching.
  5. Choose based on the trade-off: If both networks work well in your key locations, compare the full recurring cost and the features you will actually use. If one has a meaningful coverage advantage where you rely on it, weigh that against the price difference.
