The project is intended to reduce wireless dead zones and provide backup connectivity during outages, but it does not mean dead zones are gone: the carriers have not announced a launch date, customer prices, compatible phones or a coverage map.
What the carriers have agreed to do
The three carriers first announced an agreement in principle on May 14, 2026. On October 1, 2026, they said they had entered into a joint venture agreement and named Paul Roth interim CEO while they search for a permanent leader. The October announcement describes a shared platform for satellite-enabled connectivity, not a merger of the companies’ wireless networks. May announcement; October announcement.

The venture plans to pool limited spectrum resources and use direct-to-device (D2D) satellite technology. In this model, compatible ordinary phones connect through satellites using participating carrier spectrum and satellite operators’ systems. The venture’s stated role is to combine carrier IP and terrestrial spectrum, use spectrum more efficiently, develop common technical specifications and make integration simpler for satellite providers and rural mobile network operators.

What customers might gain—and what is still unknown
The carriers say the venture aims to make satellite connectivity easier to deliver where traditional mobile service is limited, improve access across providers, and provide redundancy when ground networks are unavailable. They also say the project aims to nearly eliminate currently unserved U.S. mobile dead zones and speed the arrival of new communications features. These are goals, not a guarantee that every remote location will receive service.
Common specifications and standards-based work with operating-system providers, app developers and device makers could make satellite access less fragmented over time. But the October announcement does not identify a final technical standard or confirm which phones will work. It also does not specify whether the service will support messaging, voice calls, data or some combination, nor does it give prices, subscription rules, coverage, speeds or latency.

Will your current phone work, and when will service begin?
There is not enough published information to answer either question yet. The releases provide no supported-handset list, launch date or detailed coverage map. Having an ordinary phone is not by itself proof of compatibility: the service is described as requiring compatible devices and participating carrier spectrum.
The agreement also remains distinct from the carriers’ existing satellite arrangements. The October announcement says those agreements remain in place and that each carrier may continue its independent connectivity efforts. The venture’s precise relationship to T-Mobile’s SpaceX arrangement and the satellite arrangements involving AT&T and Verizon has not been detailed. October announcement.

How the joint venture will be run
Paul Roth, who has held leadership roles at AT&T, Cingular Wireless and Ameritech, is interim CEO as the board searches for a permanent CEO. The board will include representatives from each founding carrier. October announcement.
What to use now if you have no cell service
The joint venture is not yet a customer service with published availability or sign-up details. For off-grid messaging and SOS today, Garmin’s inReach Mini 2 is a separate satellite communicator that uses the Iridium network. Garmin lists two-way text messaging, interactive SOS, location tracking and weather features; an active satellite subscription is required. It is dedicated hardware, not a feature of an AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon phone plan. Garmin inReach Mini 2; Garmin subscription information.
