AT&T Installment Plans vs. Buying an Unlocked iPhone: Which Costs Less?

Neither option is automatically cheaper. In the United States, using the same iPhone 17 capacity as a reference, Apple lists the 256GB model at $929 when you choose “Connect on your own later,” while AT&T lists $25.84 per month for 36 months at 0% APR, or $930.24 before taxes and promotional credits. AT&T can cost less when you qualify for its credits and keep the required service long enough to receive every one. Buying from Apple can be the better value when you want an unlocked phone, may change carriers, or cannot meet trade-in and plan conditions.

The comparison below uses official Apple and AT&T information checked October 13, 2026. Prices, inventory, trade-in values, credit schedules and eligibility rules can change, so treat the figures as a method and current reference point rather than a personalized quote.

The short answer

Compare the two choices over the time you expect to keep the phone, not by looking at the monthly payment alone. AT&T’s advertised iPhone 17 installment payment is almost identical to Apple’s current 256GB cash price before taxes: $25.84 multiplied by 36 months equals $930.24, compared with Apple’s $929 “Connect on your own later” price. That small difference can be overwhelmed by a qualifying AT&T bill credit, an extra service-plan charge, a trade-in requirement, or the cost of paying off the balance if you leave early.

Buying directly from Apple at full price, or using an Apple financing option, gives you an unlocked iPhone according to Apple. An iPhone financed through AT&T’s installment plan remains locked to AT&T until it is paid in full. AT&T allows the installment balance to be paid off at any time, but an early payoff can affect how much of a monthly promotional credit you actually collect.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Use this rule: carrier total = device installments + taxes and fees + incremental plan or add-on cost − promotional credits actually earned. Compare that with unlocked total = Apple’s equivalent checkout price + applicable taxes and fees. Keep the wireless plan itself identical in both calculations unless you would pay more solely to qualify for the AT&T offer.

What the current published prices show

These are the comparable figures published for the United States on October 13, 2026. They are not a universal quote for every storage tier, trade-in device or customer account.

Choice Published device figure Term or configuration Important qualification
Apple iPhone 17, 256GB $929 “Connect on your own later” checkout path Model and capacity must match the AT&T phone being compared; applicable taxes are additional.
AT&T iPhone 17 $25.84 per month 36 months, 0% APR $25.84 × 36 = $930.24 before taxes and credits; tax on the full price is due at sale.
Apple iPhone 17 family starting price $899 Separate starting-price configuration Not the same checkout configuration as the $929 256GB “Connect on your own later” listing.
AT&T Next Up Anytime $10 per month Optional add-on Has qualified-turn-in and upgrade conditions; do not include it unless you want that early-upgrade access.

The $899 Apple starting price should not be used against AT&T’s $25.84 payment unless both prices refer to the same model, storage capacity and purchase path. Apple displays multiple capacities and checkout choices, so a headline starting price may describe a different configuration.

How to calculate the real cost

1. Match the phone exactly

Write down the model, storage capacity, color if it changes availability, and whether the purchase is a full-price, carrier-connected or financing checkout. A 256GB iPhone and a different-capacity iPhone are not valid comparison points, even if both are labeled “iPhone 17.” Use Apple’s “Connect on your own later” price when comparing an unlocked purchase with a carrier device that will use the same wireless service.

2. Build the AT&T device subtotal

Start with the full installment amount, not the promotional net payment shown in an advertisement. For the published example, multiply $25.84 by 36 to get $930.24. Add the sales tax and any other one-time charges AT&T presents at checkout. AT&T says tax on the full price is due at sale, so do not spread that tax across the monthly installments in your worksheet.

3. Subtract only credits you can actually earn

AT&T’s lower advertised payments depend on conditions that include eligible service and a qualifying trade-in. Other restrictions may apply. Enter a credit only after confirming the required plan, line status, trade-in condition, activation timing and the number of months over which the credit is paid. If a credit is lost after a missed condition, the unpaid device balance does not become free; your remaining installments simply no longer receive that discount.

Rank #2
Apple iPhone 12, 64GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
  • Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
  • Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

4. Add incremental service costs

Compare the same wireless service in both scenarios. If your existing plan stays exactly the same after buying the phone from Apple, its price is not a new phone cost. If the AT&T promotion requires a more expensive plan, a new line or another paid feature that you would not otherwise purchase, add only that incremental amount for the months you expect to keep it.

5. Treat add-ons as separate decisions

Next Up Anytime is listed at an additional $10 per month. If you kept it for all 36 months, the arithmetic would be $360, but the actual value depends on whether you use its qualified-turn-in and upgrade benefits. Leave the add-on out of a basic phone-price comparison unless early-upgrade access is part of your plan.

6. Account for your exit date

Estimate how long you will remain with AT&T and how long you will keep the phone. A credit paid over many months has less value if you sell the phone, move to another carrier, cancel the line or otherwise stop meeting the offer terms before the credit schedule ends. Include the payoff amount you would face if you want to leave while installments remain.

When AT&T can be cheaper

You qualify for the full credit schedule

An AT&T promotion can reduce the device total below Apple’s price when you satisfy every condition and receive all scheduled credits. The discount is conditional, not an unconditional reduction of the iPhone’s retail price. Confirm the offer’s required service and trade-in before using its “after credits” figure in your budget.

Your service plan would cost the same anyway

If you already intend to use the qualifying AT&T plan and would pay for it regardless of where you purchase the phone, the plan does not create an incremental phone cost. In that case, the credit can be a genuine saving compared with Apple’s device price, provided you remain eligible throughout the credit period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You will keep the line through the credit period

Credits are most valuable to a buyer who expects to stay with AT&T for the required months. A buyer who changes carriers shortly after purchase should value the phone using the credits actually likely to be collected, not the maximum advertised amount.

Rank #3
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Purple - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.

When buying unlocked can be cheaper or safer

You cannot meet the trade-in or plan requirements

Without the required trade-in, eligible service or new-line status, the AT&T comparison starts near $930.24 before tax in this example. That is already slightly above Apple’s $929 256GB listing before accounting for differences in taxes, fees or financing restrictions. Do not assume an advertised net payment applies to you.

You may switch carriers before the installments end

Apple states that an AT&T-financed iPhone is locked to AT&T until paid in full. If you leave before the balance is paid, you may need to pay the remaining amount to satisfy the financing agreement and remove the financial barrier to switching. An unlocked iPhone bought outright or through Apple financing can be used with any carrier, according to Apple’s buying guidance, so it avoids that carrier-lock constraint at purchase.

You want a clean resale or travel option

An unlocked phone gives you more flexibility to change service providers or use another carrier’s compatible service without waiting for the AT&T installment balance to reach zero. That flexibility has value even when the sticker prices are close. Put a dollar value on it only if you have a specific expected move, such as a planned carrier change or a period of travel requiring another service arrangement.

Worked comparison examples

The following examples use the published $929 Apple price and $930.24 AT&T pre-credit installment total. They show how to structure the math; they do not assume a particular promotional-credit amount.

Situation Apple route AT&T route What determines the winner
No trade-in and no qualifying-plan change $929 device price plus applicable tax $930.24 installments plus tax due at sale Apple is lower on the listed device subtotal by $1.24 before tax treatment and fees.
Eligible trade-in and service, all credits received $929 plus applicable tax $930.24 plus tax minus the credits actually earned AT&T wins if the net credits exceed the $1.24 subtotal gap and any incremental plan cost.
Qualifying plan costs $15 more per month for 36 months $929 plus applicable tax $930.24 plus tax, minus credits, plus $540 in incremental plan cost The credit must exceed both the $1.24 device gap and the $540 plan difference to produce a lower combined total.
Buyer leaves after 12 months Phone remains unlocked Only credits earned through eligibility are counted; remaining balance may need payoff The value of lost credits and the payoff requirement can outweigh a promotional discount.
Buyer adds Next Up Anytime for 36 months No equivalent Apple add-on assumed Adds $360 to the AT&T side before considering its upgrade value Include it only when early upgrades are a desired benefit, not as a mandatory phone cost.

For a precise calculation, replace the example’s variables with your own figures: C for total credits you realistically expect to receive, P for any additional monthly plan cost, and M for the number of months you expect to pay that difference. The AT&T advantage over Apple’s device subtotal is approximately C − (1.24 + P × M), before any tax or fee differences. If that result is negative, Apple’s listed device price is lower for your circumstances.

Promotional credits: questions to verify before checkout

AT&T’s public listing identifies eligible service and trade-in as requirements and notes that other restrictions apply. The exact offer can vary by model, date and account, so read the offer details attached to your order rather than relying on a headline payment.

Unlock status, payoff and upgrade timing

Unlocked purchase from Apple

Apple’s buying guide says an iPhone purchased outright or financed with an Apple financing option is unlocked and can be used with any carrier. That means the device itself is not tied to an AT&T installment agreement. You still need compatible service and an active plan, but the purchase does not require you to finish a carrier financing term before changing providers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AT&T installment purchase

AT&T describes a 36-month installment plan at 0% APR and says the balance may be paid in full at any time. Apple’s shopping help states that an iPhone financed through the AT&T Installment Plan remains locked to AT&T until paid in full. Paying early can shorten the financing period, but it does not automatically make a conditional promotion profitable: calculate which future credits you would forgo and what payoff amount remains.

Early upgrades

Next Up Anytime costs an extra $10 per month and has qualified-turn-in and upgrade conditions. It is a feature for buyers who value changing phones before the standard installment term ends, not a general discount. Compare its total paid amount with the value you place on an earlier upgrade, and keep it out of the unlocked-versus-carrier device total if you would not buy the feature separately.

Taxes, fees and the first bill

AT&T says sales tax on the full phone price is due at sale. The installment amount therefore does not represent everything you pay on day one. Apple’s checkout will also show applicable taxes and fees, but the exact amount depends on location and checkout details. Use the tax shown for your address in each cart rather than assuming that the monthly payment includes it.

Keep recurring service charges separate from one-time phone charges. A fair comparison has two columns: device-related cash outlay and wireless-service outlay. Put a plan charge in the device comparison only when one option requires you to spend more than the other for the same service you actually want.

A practical decision framework

Choose AT&T financing when all of these are true

  • You have verified that your model and storage qualify for the advertised offer.
  • Your trade-in meets the stated eligibility and condition requirements.
  • The required AT&T service costs no more than the service you would otherwise choose, or the credits exceed that difference.
  • You expect to remain eligible through the credit schedule.
  • You accept the phone’s AT&T lock until the installment balance is paid in full.
  • You have budgeted the full-price sales tax due at purchase.

Choose an unlocked Apple purchase when any of these are true

  • You want to change carriers without paying off a carrier installment balance.
  • You do not have a qualifying trade-in or do not want to commit to the required service.
  • The AT&T plan or add-ons would cost more than the credits you can realistically collect.
  • You prefer a known device price instead of a discount spread over future billing cycles.
  • You expect to sell, give away or move the phone before 36 months.

Common comparison mistakes

Comparing a starting price with a different capacity

Apple’s $899 family starting price and $929 256GB “Connect on your own later” price describe different configurations. Match storage before doing any arithmetic.

Using the advertised net payment as the phone price

A promotional payment assumes eligibility and future compliance. Start with the full installment amount, then subtract only credits you have verified and expect to earn.

Ignoring the plan premium

A $20 monthly plan difference over 36 months is $720. Even a large device credit may not offset that recurring cost. Add the difference for the entire period you expect to pay it.

Forgetting tax at sale

AT&T’s published terms require tax on the full price at sale. Keep enough cash available for that charge instead of budgeting only for the first installment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming early payoff preserves every credit

Payoff, cancellation and plan changes can affect future credits. Read the offer’s rules before paying ahead or switching service.

Treating Next Up Anytime as mandatory

The $10 monthly feature is optional. Include it only when you want its qualified-turn-in and upgrade benefits.

Checkout checklist

  1. Record the exact iPhone model and storage capacity.
  2. Save Apple’s equivalent “Connect on your own later” price and AT&T’s full installment amount.
  3. Multiply the AT&T monthly payment by 36 to verify the pre-credit device total.
  4. List every AT&T eligibility condition, including service, line status and trade-in requirements.
  5. Write down the total credits you expect, the first billing cycle in which they appear and the final month they are scheduled.
  6. Calculate any extra plan or add-on cost separately from the phone.
  7. Add taxes and one-time fees shown at each checkout.
  8. Decide how long you will keep the line and whether you may switch carriers earlier.
  9. Check the unlock status and the amount required to pay off the AT&T balance if your plans change.
  10. Choose the option with the lower realistic total, not the lower advertised monthly number.

Bottom line

For the published iPhone 17 example, Apple’s $929 256GB unlocked checkout and AT&T’s $930.24 pre-credit installment total are effectively the same device price before taxes. AT&T becomes cheaper only after you verify that your credits exceed any plan or add-on costs and that you will remain eligible long enough to receive them. Apple is the more flexible choice when carrier freedom, predictable pricing or an uncertain upgrade timeline matters more than a conditional discount.
