Under AT&T’s current Consumer Service Agreement, wireless service without a Service Commitment is month-to-month. You can generally qualify by buying a phone at full price, financing it through an installment plan, or bringing your own compatible device. However, a financed phone or accessory is a separate financial obligation: if you cancel the linked line, AT&T says the remaining installment balance becomes due immediately. AT&T Prepaid monthly plans have no annual contract or credit check. Home-internet products are different and must be checked against their own order documents.
What “contract” means for AT&T wireless
People use “contract” to describe two different arrangements. The first is a service commitment: a fixed period during which ending service early may trigger an early termination fee (ETF). The second is a device payment agreement: installments for a phone, tablet, watch, or accessory that you still owe even when wireless service itself is month-to-month.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
AT&T’s Consumer Service Agreement draws that distinction explicitly. It states that if you do not have a Service Commitment—for example, because you bought the device at full retail price, used an installment plan, or brought your own device—your service is provided on a month-to-month basis and automatically renews unless canceled or terminated. Month-to-month describes the service term; it does not erase a device balance, charges already incurred, or other terms in your account documents.

Service commitment versus month-to-month service
A Service Commitment is the part that can create an ETF when you terminate before the agreed end date. The fee is not automatic for every AT&T customer; it depends on the service-specific terms you accepted. Check your service summary, order confirmation, and any signed agreement to see whether a commitment exists and how an early termination is handled.

Installments are not the same as a service term
An installment plan spreads the device price over scheduled payments. You may still have month-to-month wireless service while those payments continue. AT&T’s cancellation guidance says that when you cancel the line associated with an installment plan, unpaid installments become due immediately and appear on the final bill. The rule also applies to accessory installment agreements linked to the line.
AT&T wireless choices and their obligations
| Option | What it means | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless service without a Service Commitment | Month-to-month service. Examples in AT&T’s agreement include buying a device at full retail price, using an installment plan, or bringing your own device. | Whether your account has any separate commitment, the device installment balance, promotional credits, and the billing-period end date. |
| AT&T Prepaid | Monthly plans are described as having no annual contract or credit check. AT&T also lists multi-month and multi-line plan types. | The exact plan period, renewal date, payment method, remaining service, and the terms that govern prepaid service. |
| Bring your own device (BYOD) | You use a phone you already own instead of obtaining one from AT&T. For AT&T Prepaid, the phone must be compatible and unlocked; activation can use a SIM or eSIM. | Compatibility, carrier-unlock status, supported network features, and whether the device is eligible for the plan you want. |
| Wireless service with a Service Commitment | A fixed service period. An ETF may apply if you end service before the commitment is complete. | The signed or service-specific terms, the commitment end date, and any return or waiver provisions. |
| AT&T home internet | Wired and wireless internet products have separate terms from the wireless-phone examples above. | The exact product, location eligibility, commitment language, equipment ownership, and return instructions in your order documents. |
Does AT&T Prepaid have a contract?
AT&T’s Prepaid support material says its monthly plans have no annual contract and no credit check. That makes Prepaid a practical choice if you want to avoid a yearly service commitment or a credit review. Plan structures can include monthly, multi-month, and multi-line arrangements, so “no annual contract” does not mean every plan has the same renewal date or cancellation mechanics.
Prepaid is still governed by service terms. You pay for service in advance, and the amount of time remaining on a plan can matter when you switch plans, stop renewing, or move a line. AT&T recommends making plan changes near the renewal date; changing earlier can affect the service period you have already paid for. Review the plan’s payment and renewal date before making a change.
Prepaid does not finance your phone automatically
You can use a phone you already own with Prepaid, subject to compatibility and unlock requirements. If you separately finance a device through AT&T or another provider, that financing agreement remains distinct from the prepaid service arrangement. “No annual contract” should therefore be read as a statement about the service term, not a promise that every device or accessory is owned outright.

Can you bring your own phone to AT&T?
Yes, AT&T’s BYOD guidance supports using a customer-owned phone for Prepaid when the handset is compatible and unlocked. An unlocked phone can accept another carrier’s service, but unlocking alone does not guarantee that every network band, calling feature, or plan feature will work. Compatibility must be checked separately.
- Check compatibility. Use AT&T’s BYOD compatibility process for the phone’s model or device identifier and confirm that it supports the service features you need.
- Confirm the phone is unlocked. A device that is still restricted by its previous carrier may reject AT&T activation even if its hardware is otherwise compatible.
- Choose a SIM or eSIM activation method. AT&T’s guidance identifies both physical SIM and eSIM options, depending on the device and activation flow.
- Check feature support after activation. Verify calling, messaging, mobile data, and any features important to you before discarding the old SIM or closing the previous account.
If you need a handset, compare compatible unlocked smartphones rather than assuming a particular model will work. Compatibility can vary by model, regional version, and supported network features.
What happens if you cancel AT&T wireless?
Cancellation results depend on whether you have a Service Commitment, an unpaid device balance, or both. Month-to-month service generally avoids a fixed-term ETF, but AT&T’s agreement still governs the final bill and the timing of your cancellation.
- Review your account documents. Look for a Service Commitment, its end date, and any early-termination language in the service summary or order confirmation.
- Identify financed equipment. Check each phone and accessory installment agreement linked to the line you plan to cancel.
- Estimate the final bill. Include unpaid installments, service used during the current period, and any fee authorized by your specific agreement.
- Ask AT&T to confirm the effective cancellation date. Keep the confirmation number or other record of the request.
- Plan around the billing cycle. AT&T’s agreement says monthly wireless service charges are not prorated when you cancel before the billing period ends, so canceling mid-cycle may not reduce that month’s recurring charge.
- Pay or resolve the final balance. AT&T says the remaining device installments tied to a canceled line become due immediately and appear on the final bill.
Early termination fees
An ETF may apply only when a Service Commitment exists and you end it before the commitment is complete. Do not assume that every customer has one, and do not assume that month-to-month service is entirely free of final-bill obligations. Your own signed or service-specific terms control.

Service charges already incurred
Cancellation does not erase service you have already used. The agreement’s non-proration language means the regular monthly charge can remain due for the billing period in which you cancel, even if the line is stopped before that period ends.
What happens to phone payments when you cancel?
Phone financing is the most common reason a customer can have a substantial final bill despite having no fixed-term service contract. AT&T’s cancellation guidance says the unpaid balance on an installment plan becomes due immediately when the associated line is canceled. The same treatment can apply to accessory installments.
| How you obtained the device | Effect of canceling wireless service |
|---|---|
| Bought at full retail price | No AT&T device installments remain, although normal service charges and any other account obligations still follow the agreement. |
| Financed through an installment plan | Remaining unpaid installments are due immediately on the final bill when the linked line is canceled. |
| Brought your own device | AT&T does not have a device balance for that handset, but compatibility, unlock status, and any separate financing from another seller remain your responsibility. |
| Financed accessory | Any unpaid accessory installments linked to the canceled line can also become immediately due. |
Promotional credits can further complicate the calculation. Before canceling, ask how many credits remain and whether the device agreement says they stop when the line is terminated. Do not treat a headline device discount as proof that no balance will be left.
Is AT&T home internet contract-free?
There is no single wireless-phone answer that covers every AT&T internet product. AT&T’s consumer agreement includes separate terms for wired and wireless home internet, and it directs customers to product-specific terms and order documents. Fiber, Internet Air, fixed wireless, DSL, and bundled arrangements can therefore have different commitments, equipment rules, or cancellation requirements.

Before ordering or canceling home internet, identify the exact service on your confirmation and look for:
- Any fixed-term commitment or promotional-period condition.
- Whether the service is wired or wireless and whether availability is location-specific.
- Which equipment is AT&T-owned, leased, or customer-owned.
- How and when equipment must be returned.
- Any final-bill, installation, or unreturned-equipment provisions.
For wired internet, AT&T’s terms generally require AT&T-owned equipment to be returned within 21 calendar days after termination unless AT&T says otherwise in writing. Keep the shipping or drop-off receipt until the return is credited to your account.

You want the fewest long-term obligations
Month-to-month wireless service or an AT&T Prepaid monthly plan avoids an annual service commitment according to the cited AT&T materials. Choose a phone you own outright or bring a compatible unlocked device so a separate installment balance does not follow you to the final bill.

You already own an unlocked phone
BYOD can avoid a new device payment. Confirm compatibility as well as unlock status; either check alone is insufficient.
You are considering home internet
Do not rely on the wireless-phone answer. Read the order documents for the exact internet product, commitment, and equipment-return rules at your address.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling every payment a contract. Separate the service term from the device installment agreement.
- Assuming “no contract” means no final bill. Device installments and service charges already incurred can remain payable.
- Assuming Prepaid is completely agreement-free. It has no annual contract for the cited monthly plans, but service terms and renewal rules still apply.
- Using any unlocked phone. Unlocking does not establish compatibility with AT&T’s network or a particular plan.
- Canceling mid-cycle to obtain a partial refund. AT&T’s agreement says monthly wireless charges are not prorated when cancellation occurs before the billing period ends.
- Applying phone-service rules to internet. Internet commitments and equipment obligations are product-specific.
- Discarding equipment or proof of return. Retain tracking and receipts until AT&T confirms the equipment charge is removed.
Documents to check before you switch or cancel
Gather the current Consumer Service Agreement, your service summary or order confirmation, each device or accessory installment agreement, and the latest bill. For Prepaid, note the plan type and renewal date. For BYOD, record the phone model, compatibility result, and unlock status. For home internet, keep the product name, equipment list, and return instructions.
Those documents answer the questions a generic “contract” label cannot: whether a Service Commitment exists, when it ends, what remains on a device balance, whether credits continue, how billing is handled on cancellation, and whether equipment must be returned. If the documents conflict with a general web description, the terms tied to your order and account are the safer guide.
Bottom line
AT&T wireless service can be month-to-month without a fixed-term Service Commitment, and AT&T Prepaid monthly plans are advertised as having no annual contract or credit check. That does not make every account obligation disappear. A Service Commitment can create an ETF, financed devices and accessories can become immediately payable when their line is canceled, and monthly service charges are generally not prorated for a partial billing period. Treat home internet separately and verify its product-specific terms and equipment rules before ordering or ending service.
