Atomionics Says Quantum Gravimeter Matched an Indian Iron-Ore Estimate Within 5%

Atomionics says a three-week survey with its GRAVIO quantum gravimeter at an active Indian iron-ore mine produced an independent 3D density model that estimated contained iron to within 5% of the operator’s drilled-out resource. The result, announced on 12 October 2026, is a company-reported benchmark rather than an independently audited mine study.

What Atomionics reported

GRAVIO collected measurements from an SUV while the mine continued operating. Atomionics says heavy haul trucks, excavators and persistent bench vibration were present throughout the work, yet the survey did not interrupt production. Its ORE-O machine-learning inversion tool converted the gravity readings into a 3D density model. The company says that model resolved structural contacts and identified extensions deeper than any hole previously drilled at the site.

The benchmark was compared with a resource defined through four years of geological evaluation and a drilling campaign exceeding 30,000 metres. Atomionics estimates that drilling effort cost between $4 million and $6 million. Those time, meterage and expenditure figures, like the 5% result, come from Atomionics’ own announcement.

“Heavy haul trucks were rumbling past, excavators were loading right beside us, and bench vibration was constant. But through all that chaos, seeing GRAVIO deliver clean data confirmed the technology is ready for the toughest operational environments,” said Dr. Ravi Kumar, Atomionics’ co-founder and chief technology officer.

How GRAVIO and ORE-O work

Cold-atom gravity measurement

GRAVIO uses cold-atom interferometry. Rubidium atoms are laser-cooled, released into free fall and interrogated with laser pulses. The instrument derives acceleration against atomic constants, allowing it to measure absolute gravity rather than the relative response of a mechanical spring.

Atomionics says that approach avoids the conventional drift associated with spring gravimeters and removes the need to return repeatedly to a base station for corrections. The practical consequence is a mobile system that can be carried through a working mine instead of requiring a fixed, interruption-prone survey setup.

From gravity readings to a geological volume

Gravity alone does not directly count tonnes of iron. Variations in the measured field reflect contrasts in subsurface density, and geological interpretation is needed to turn those contrasts into a body, boundary or target. ORE-O applies machine learning trained on physics and geology to invert the readings into a 3D density volume for structural interpretation and drill targeting.

At the Indian site, the model was judged against an already drilled resource. That makes the result an estimate validated against a known benchmark, not evidence that the system can define every iron-ore resource without any drilling or geological control.

Can quantum gravimetry replace drilling?

No. The reported workflow is better understood as a way to prioritize and shape drilling. A density model can suggest where an ore body continues, where contacts shift or which deeper targets deserve a hole, but a mine still needs sampling, geological controls and resource-estimation procedures to establish grade, continuity, metallurgy and economic mineability.

The 5% figure also describes agreement with the operator’s drilled-out resource at one unnamed mine. Atomionics has not identified the mine operator in the announcement, and no regulator’s report, peer-reviewed paper or independent audit for this specific deployment was identified. The result therefore should not be generalized into a universal accuracy claim.

Reported approach versus conventional gravity exploration

Comparison point GRAVIO and ORE-O in this announcement Conventional exploration practice
Acquisition mobility Measurements were collected from an SUV inside an operating mine; Atomionics also describes future airborne-drone access. Survey logistics vary by instrument and terrain, often using fixed stations, vehicle lines or repeatable ground traverses.
Drift and base stations Atomionics says absolute cold-atom measurement avoids conventional instrument drift and base-station return requirements. Relative spring gravimeters generally require drift control, calibration and base-station ties.
Field-to-model workflow ORE-O produced a 3D density interpretation from the mobile data; the release does not state a processing time. Processing time depends on survey design, corrections, inversion choices and geological interpretation.
Resolution and depth confidence Structural contacts and deeper target extensions were reported, but no independent resolution or depth-uncertainty figures were provided. Resolution and depth confidence depend on station spacing, noise, geology, inversion assumptions and validation holes.
Validation Compared with the operator’s drilled-out resource at the Indian site; the mine and operator were not named. Targets are normally checked against existing geology, drilling and later resource work.
Cost per target No GRAVIO survey price or independently measured cost saving was stated. Costs vary with crew, access, station density, terrain, processing and follow-up drilling.
Operational disturbance The company says production continued during the three-week SUV survey. Disturbance depends on whether crews, vehicles, access roads or fixed installations are required.

Why the result matters for mine planning

Drilling is often the expensive, slow step in converting a geophysical target into a resource. A mobile gravity survey that highlights density boundaries before a rig is committed could help an exploration team choose hole locations, test deeper extensions or avoid low-value holes. Atomionics positions the same platform for critical-minerals exploration, oil and gas, alternative-energy resources and defense or navigation applications.

Those potential uses remain broader than the evidence from this mine. The Indian deployment demonstrates that Atomionics says the instrument operated in a noisy production environment and produced a model close to an existing drilled estimate; it does not establish comparative superiority over every conventional gravity survey or drilling program.

Atomionics’ Early Access pathway

Atomionics says its Early Access Program is intended for teams with prospective ground and some existing drill data. The company describes a zero-cost validation survey, priority access to future wide-area airborne-drone acquisition and possible company-funded confirmation drilling in exchange for a target-level participating interest.

These are vendor-stated program terms, not independently verified commercial conditions. Exploration groups should confirm current eligibility, ownership arrangements, target definitions, liability, data rights and any jurisdiction-specific legal terms directly with Atomionics before participating.

What is established—and what is not

  • Established by the announcement: Atomionics deployed GRAVIO at an active Indian iron-ore mine, collected data from an SUV for three weeks and used ORE-O to create a 3D density model.
  • Reported outcome: The company says contained iron was estimated within 5% of the operator’s drilled-out resource.
  • Operating claim: Atomionics says trucks, excavators and bench vibration did not prevent usable measurements or interrupt production.
  • Still unresolved: The mine operator, independent validation, regulator documentation, peer-reviewed analysis, survey cost and quantified resolution or depth uncertainty were not disclosed.

For now, the announcement is credible evidence of a notable field demonstration by the vendor, not a standalone proof that quantum gravimetry can replace drilling or that a 5% match will repeat across deposits.
